  • Housing Minister Lori Sigurdson takes leave for cancer treatment

    Alberta Seniors and Housing Minister Lori Sigurdson has been diagnosed with leukemia. 
    The Edmonton-Riverview MLA will take a 40-day leave of absence to undergo treatment. Social Services Minister Irfan Sabir will cover her portfolio.
    Sigurdson, a former social worker, was elected in 2015. She headed up the advanced education and labour ministries from May 2015 to February 2016 when she was shuffled to her current file.

  • Prime minister to visit Mill Woods Gurdwara today

    Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will visit the Gurdwara Millwoods on Monday.
    According to his itinerary, the prime minister will arrive at the Sikh place of prayer at 6:30 p.m.
    Trudeau will visit the Gurdwara ahead of Edmonton’s Nagar Kirtan Sikh parade celebrating Vaisakhi this coming Sunday, his spokesperson Eleanore Catenaro said Monday morning. 
    During his visit, Trudeau will make a donation to the food bank at the Gurdwara, help prepare food boxes and bring a food donation.

    Sandra Manseau’s roof was lost in a Summerside house fire Monday morning, but her dog, parrot, three ferrets, and two hamsters were safely evacuated.
    Manseau’s home, near 19 Avenue and 67 Street in the city’s southeast, caught fire just before 6 a.m., Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokeswoman Katie Stewart said later Monday morning. The blaze started on the deck of Manseau’s next-door neighbour and the cause is still under investigation.

    Canada’s Governor General will be in Edmonton Tuesday as part of her first official visit to Alberta. 
    Gov. Gen. Julie Payette was sworn in as Canada’s 29th representative of the Queen in October.

    Planet Organic Market has resolved issues it ran into with paying suppliers on time and is opening two new stores in the Edmonton area, the company said Monday.

  • Southeast blaze damages pair of homes

    Two homes in the Summerside neighbourhood were damaged in an early morning fire Monday.
    Edmonton Fire Rescue was called to a fire at a single-family home near 19 Avenue and 67 Street in the city’s southeast just before 6 a.m., spokeswoman Katie Stewart said Monday.
    But when crews arrived, two homes in the area were on fire. The residents of both homes escaped safely on their own, Stewart said.
