It’s a good thing Edmonton fire crews are unflappable.
In a classic case of man versus nature, Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services were called to the city’s southwest Friday morning to help a motorist retrieve their car keys … from a goose.
Normally fish and wildlife officers would deal with such calls but they were unable to assist because they were in the midst of their own call dealing with an errant moose, an Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokeswoman said.

It's official: Edmonton Oilers part company with four coaches, re-assign a fifth

The club announced the return of head man Todd McLellan but the structure of his staff will be vastly different:The only names not mentioned are goalie coach Dustin Schwartz and Bakersfield assistant J.F. Each year, three Canadian writers are shortlisted for Canada’s most lucrative poetry award. The winner walks away with a total of $75,000. The two runners-up collect $10,000 each.
So you could pardon Billy-Ray Belcourt, 23, for getting a little bit excited to find his debut book, The Wound is a World, on this year’s shortlist.

Council goes in private to debate the future of Edmonton's Metro LRT Line
Council has gone behind closed doors to debate the future of Edmonton’s Metro LRT Line as it stares down a self-imposed deadline.
Last December, council voted to give signalling contractor Thales Canada until April 30 to get the line running properly or face “serious consequences.” That’s just three days away.
Council started debating the issue late Wednesday afternoon. They went back in camera to debate it again at 11:30 Friday morning, expecting to continue -
Man guilty in triple murder of Edson family
A man has been found guilty of three counts of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a family in a rural residence near Edson in 2015.
Mickell Bailey killed his aunt by marriage Roxanne Berube, her boyfriend, Daniel Miller, and Berube’s daughter, Jazmine Lyon.
“The evidence showing Mr. Bailey shot these three people is overwhelming,” said Justice Sterling Sanderman. He said he accepts the evidence of the four people who testified Bailey confessed the killings -

Pork recall expands again in wake of E. coli infections
The number of people confirmed to have an E. coli infection connected to contaminated pork has risen to 37, while the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has expanded a recall of products to include another brand of meat and two shops.
The federal agency says pork from The Meat Shop at Pine Haven near Wetaskiwin is the source of the outbreak that has made people ill in the Edmonton area. E. coli is the likely cause of the death of one of those people and is responsible for 11 hospitalizations -
Council wrestles with 'sobering' funding gap for infrastructure needs
City council received a “sobering” presentation on Edmonton’s 10-year funding challenge Friday, showing a $3.8-billion gap between money promised for construction projects and the estimated cost of the work.
Even in this next four-year capital budget cycle, there is not enough available cash for the city to cover repairs and the new growth projects where partners have already promised to share costs.
Funding for those projects, such as the Yellowhead Trail upgr -

An 18-year-old Edmonton female is facing uttering threats and mischief charges in relation to a school lockdown earlier this month in St. Albert.
Bellerose Composite High School went into lockdown on April 9 after students and staff became aware of a threat against the school, Mounties said Thursday.
The suspect, who is not being named “to protect the victims and accused involved in the incident”, is also facing a public mischief charge.
She is scheduled to appear in St. Albert -

Pork recall affects other local businesses
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has expanded a recall of pork-containing products in Alberta that are potentially contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
The recalls may expand further, Dr. Jasmine Hasselback, medical officer of health for the Edmonton zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS), said Thursday. Dozens of Alberta businesses bought products from the suspected source of contaminated meat, the owner has said.
As of Thursday, 36 people in Edmonton and surrounding areas had lab-confi -
How will the Oilers fare in the NHL draft?
The Oilers have the ninth best draft odds (five per cent) at moving to No. 1 from No. 9 for the April 28 lottery. Not great, but last year New Jersey went from No. 5 to No. 1 with only an 8.5 per cent chance and took centre Nico Hischier, who doesn’t look like a Swiss miss. So anything’s possible. -
Edmonton Weather: If you're a fan of warmth then today is for you
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Friday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measure 7.1 C with a 9 km/h wind coming from the south-east. We’re looking at a sunny weekend for the capital city before heading into next week where the temps look to take a dip in the teens. But for right now things are looking like shorts and shades kinda weather so maybe you call in sick.
Today: Sunny. Wind becoming south 20 km/h gusting to 40 this -
Friday's letters: Consult residents on speed limits
Speed limits are a serious issue that affects all Edmontonians in a profound way.
Why aren’t our councillors polling their constituents to get the full picture on how this will affect them? Where are the public forums so that we, the tax-paying citizens can have a say on this? Why does it seem like this is getting rammed through without due process?
I would like to have more thought and discussion on this matter than what is presently being done, after all this is supposed to be a democrac -
Editorial: Police disclosure needs revamp
It is horrifying enough that Raelyn Supernant’s life was taken at two months old; that the general public would likely never have known that she died a homicide victim, without a journalist’s sharp eye, only magnifies the tragedy.
The baby was taken off life support and died in hospital in 2016 after Brandon James Calahoo, who was dating Raelyn’s mother, shook her and left her in her crib for several hours without medical attention. On Wednesday, Calahoo pleaded guilty to crimi -

David Staples: University of Alberta reveals blind spot in deciding to honour David Suzuki
Something has gone haywire at the University of Alberta with its decision to award an honorary degree to David Suzuki, a prominent science educator but also a controversial anti-oilsands crusader.
The U of A’s misstep speaks to a blind spot. How could everyone in on this decision have failed to see the significance of Suzuki’s incendiary and unbalanced brand of anti-oilsands activism?
It’s not like his views are a secret. Suzuki has savaged the oilsands for years. He&rsquo -
