Enoch Cree Nation and the City of Edmonton — in recognition of their history of more than 100 years — have recommitted to a memorandum of understanding.
Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson and Enoch Cree Chief Billy Morin joined in a celebration Saturday between the two, at Ford Hall in Rogers Place, 10214 104 Ave.
“Today we reaffirm our commitment to the 2017 MOU signed between our two governments – a document that acknowledges our shared 100+ year history,” said Morin in a

On winter roads, the Canadian hockey family and the Humboldt tragedy
All of us in the Canadian hockey family, we head out on winter roads for games and tournaments. For the love of the game, we leave our homes on icy roads into the dark.
I coached a low tier peewee team in Edmonton this year. The team had a wide variety of players, a few strong skaters and skilled girls but also some weak skaters and one player who was new to both hockey and skating. But being hockey fanatics pretty much one and all, we didn’t take it easy. Coaches pushed the girls to -
Stephen Wack, Humboldt Broncos defenceman from St. Albert, dies in bus crash
Stephen Wack, a 21-year-old defenceman from St. Albert on the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team was one of the players killed in a bus crash Friday in Saskatchewan.
Fourteen people were killed after the bus carrying the hockey team collided with a semi-trailer unit north of Tisdale, Sask. on Friday evening.
Fifteen others on the bus were injured, three critically. The RCMP initially reported there were 28 people on the bus, but corrected that number Saturday morning to 29.
Raised in St. A -

Review: 73-year-old Rod Stewart lands his time machine in Edmonton
Any number of moments at Rod Stewart’s Friday night concert could poke out from beneath the leopard print as a favourite. One example, the Royally-knighted singer comically slapping his plastic stool as if resentful, at 73, that he needed to sit down now and then.
Or perhaps one might focus on four and a half business-glam costume changes where Stewart ended up in a ratty flattened cowboy hat for the finale.
Maybe for some it was the singer’s impressively-long kicks of 20 soccer ball -
Saturday's letters: Playground zones poorly planned
Of course we want to make city streets safer for children but the current playground-zone speed-reduction program is illogical and poorly executed.
The extended time and lack of seasonality are two of the failings of this program. What is most puzzling is how and where reduced speeds are applied. Where playgrounds, or sports fields, abut a residential 50-km/h road, the speed has been reduced to 30 km/h. However, where that same complex abuts a higher-speed major road, the speed has not been redu -
Despite industry changes more music learning options available
Trying to make a living as a musician has never been easy, but changes to music distribution over the past 20 years — specifically streaming and downloading — have made it harder than ever.
“It’s a dynamic industry. The old days are gone,” says veteran musician, teacher and academic Bill Richards. “There are a lot of opportunities out there, but few people are making money. It really is a Wild West out there for musicians. In many cases, they are basically giv -
From the Cult of Hockey, The Humboldt Broncos Tragedy: This wasn't supposed to happen. Again.
When I first got the note on my phone, I honestly thought it was a mistake. A bad one.
But as seconds turned into minutes, and details started to trickle in, I realized that it was not a mistake. I didn’t seem possible. But it was. It had happened again.
By the time you read this, you will very likely have heard that a team bus belonging to the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League collided with a semi, late Friday afternoon. It was loaded with coaches, trainers and tee -
Families wait to hear from Edmonton-area loved ones who play for Humboldt Broncos
Families and friends of Edmonton-area players on the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team awaited news from their loved ones Friday night after a horrifying bus crash in Saskatchewan.
Seven of the team’s players are from northern Alberta or the Edmonton area: left-winger Conner Lukan from Slave Lake, centre Jaxon Joseph from Edmonton, centre Tyler Smith from Leduc, right-winger Logan Hunter from St. Albert, centre Derek Patter from Edmonton, defenceman Stephen Wack from St. Albert and goali -
Excellent advice to NHL players from Jason Strudwick: " I don't think players should be on social media"
This in from former NHLer Jason Strudwick, talking to TSN1260’s Jason Gregor about how NHL players should deal with social media: “When I played in the NHL, I did not listen to anything or read anything, except what my idiot friends would send me when people would write bad stuff about me. So for that I hate my friends (laughs). They were real pricks (laughs). I do see a lot of players, though, Erik Karlsson said the other day, ‘I’m very much on social media. I see what y -
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blames Harper Conservatives for delays in pipeline projects
Fort McMurray — Delays in getting pipelines built and a public mistrust toward oilsands developments are legacies of the former Conservative government, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said during a Friday tour of Suncor’s Fort Hills operation north of Fort McMurray.
Following the visit, Trudeau said the Harper government failed to get major pipeline projects built because Canadians did not trust those in power “to both grow the economy and protect the environment.”

Veterinarian shortage looms for rural Alberta after province nixes agreement: critic
Alberta faces a shortage of rural veterinarians in the coming years following the government’s decision to pull funding from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and redirect a portion of it to the University of Calgary.
That was the bleak warning from Progressive Conservative Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Richard Starke, a retired veterinarian, who Thursday grilled Advanced Education Minister Marlin Schmidt about the NDP government’s decision to end a 54-year-old agree -

Mayor foresees cost-savings, better service as big city charter takes effect
Alberta’s move to give its two biggest cities more flexibility took a step forward this week as city charters took effect in Edmonton and Calgary.
It’s the first phase of a new deal sought for years by municipal leaders in the two major metropolitan areas. The charters craft some distinct rules for Alberta’s two largest local governments, which until now worked under the same rules as the smallest town.
The regulations were approved by the NDP cabinet this week -
Paula Simons: New tools needed to keep old Edmonton from crumbling around us
You could hardly imagine two more different buildings.
The Minchau blacksmith shop opened in 1925 on 81 Avenue and 101 Street, back when Strathcona was home to a thriving German immigrant community. The solid red brick building, with its distinctive roof line and its arched casement windows, gives a certain Wild West feel to the streetscape. It’s the last building of its kind left in Edmonton, a legacy of the pioneer families who shaped this city with their labour, with their hands. -
Peter Lougheed Leadership College shortfall forces University of Alberta to find $9 million
The University of Alberta says it needs to find $9 million to cover its elite leadership college after the NDP government suspended funding for three years.
On top of that, the Peter Lougheed Leadership College is also looking for a new leader as the tenure of the founding principal, former Canadian prime minister Kim Campbell, is coming to an end.
Established in 2014 under former U of A president Indira Samarasekera and the then Progressive Conservative government, the college’s -

Peddling pipelines
Premier Rachel Notley is off to New York on Sunday for an energy trade mission.
She will attend an invitation-only summit for leaders in industry, finance and policy, said a government news release Friday.
On Wednesday, she’ll be in Toronto to deliver a keynote address at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers energy symposium.
The speech will advocate for building a pipeline to tidewater, said the release.

Graham Thomson: NDP sets trap for Kenney with abortion clinic buffer zones
It’s perhaps a tad too cynical to say the Alberta government’s new Bill 9 is merely a political trap set up to ensnare United Conservative Party Leader Jason Kenney.
But for the government, that is part of the appeal.
The bill — called the Protecting Choice for Women Accessing Health Care Act — is designed to keep anti-abortion activists at least 50 metres away from abortion clinics.
It’s sure to raise the hackles of anti-abortion groups as well as anti-abortion pol -
