Game Day 77: Blue Jackets at Oilers
Remember when Connor McDavid was having trouble putting the biscuit in the basket? It was just a couple of months ago that the Edmonton Oilers phenom went through a drought, scoring just once in 13 games leading into the All-Star break. During that break I wrote this post breaking down his performance during that dry spell:

  • Grande Prairie photographer’s video of lynx love battle goes viral

By Kevin HampsonA Grande Prairie photographer has captured footage worthy of the Discovery Channel in what he calls “one of the most epic experiences of my life.”
On Wednesday evening, Amos Wiebe was driving on a logging road near Grande Prairie, looking for owls to photograph. In the fading daylight, he noticed a commotion about 100 feet up in the trees. It was two lynx, apparently having a fight.
“I quickly stopped my truck, grabbed my camera and started filming,” Wiebe

  • Tuesday's letters: May should pay for defying injunction

When Elizabeth May, a federal member of Parliament and lawyer, purposely defies a federal judge’s order, she will certainly look good in orange coveralls behind bars.
Let’s hope the judiciary now has the backbone to enforce their orders. Her gold- plated pension will be a good target in a civil action for costs of delaying the project.

  • Opinion: Putin not likely to soften with re-election

On Sunday, March 18, Russian voters returned Vladimir V. Putin to office with a reported 76.67 per cent of the votes. The result was never in doubt, and the main concern of the government was to ensure that turnout was sufficiently high. Many observers commented that the elections were a charade and that some candidates were nominated with government approval.
In second place with just over 12 per cent was Pavel Grudinin, leader of the Communist Party but also an oligarch and a former mem
  • Brian Jean on going to the United Conservative Party convention, conservatism in Alberta

If you thought Brian Jean was going to go away quietly and rebuild his Fort McMurray home after his resignation from provincial politics, you would be wrong.
The former Wildrose leader has already signed up for the United Conservative Party founding convention in May and, last week, shot into the world his thoughts on the NDP’s Budget 2018 (spoiler alert: he wasn’t a fan).
He’s out of the limelight, but Jean has no intention of fading away.
    Instead, he plans to use

  • Combined Winners-HomeSense store opening at West Edmonton Mall

A new combined HomeSense-Winners store opens Tuesday at West Edmonton Mall.
The 5,700-square-metre shop replaces the former Winners outlet. The mall didn’t have a HomeSense store, said a spokesperson for TJX Canada, the Canadian subsidiary of the American parent for the two retail chains.
The setup is considered a “one-stop shop” for customers seeking clothing and home decor, she said.

The association representing 4,300 members of the University of Alberta academic staff on Monday slammed what it sees as unjustified budget cuts and urged cuts to senior administration rather than to teaching or research.

  • Graham Thomson: Premier Rachel Notley declares 'definitive' victory with pipeline ruling — but is it?

A recent court ruling in British Columbia has Premier Rachel Notley convinced that construction of the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion project will go ahead this year.
“That’s absolutely our timeline,” said a happy Notley on Monday.
If only it were that simple.
But it seems whenever one hurdle is toppled for the Trans Mountain expansion, there’s another in the way. The path ahead for the $7.4-billion project still looks more like a steeplechase than a straightaway.

  • University of Alberta student's research could give boost to oilsands reclamation

A University of Alberta graduate student might have found a way to speed up the long, expensive process of reclaiming land torn up for oilsands extraction.
Prem Pokharel’s master’s thesis showed that loading jack pine and trembling aspen seedlings with extra nitrogen and other nutrients before they were put in the ground at two former northern Alberta mining sites meant the trees grew more quickly.

    Praise be.
    It’s a March miracle.
After more than 15 years of arguing and debate and stalling and making plans and ripping them up again, the city may actually be on the brink of starting work on an LRT line to connect downtown Edmonton with West Edmonton Mall and beyond.
Late Friday, after three days of an often-rancorous public hearing, Edmonton city council summoned its courage and finalized the route for the western leg of the Valley Line.
