• Ice District fuels Edmonton condo sales jump, highest in Canada: report

Edmonton condo sales saw the largest percentage of growth among key Canadian markets in 2017, thanks to a hot downtown real estate market.
A total of 1,289 units were sold last year, according to numbers released by Altus Group Limited on Monday. That amounts to a 60 per cent increase in new condominium apartment sales over 2016.
“This significant increase was connected to the downtown condo market where the new Rogers Place attracted buyers to the city’s core, with sales increasing

  • Notley gives B.C., feds days to sort out pipeline spat, or more retaliation coming

The British Columbian and federal governments have just days to figure out the Trans Mountain pipeline spat, or Alberta will ramp up retaliation against its western neighbour.
Premier Rachel Notley told reporters in Edmonton Monday that B.C. and Ottawa officials are currently in talks to resolve what she has branded that province’s illegal, unconstitutional actions.
She’ll give the two governments space to talk, but they shouldn’t expect long.

This in from Allan “Lowetide Mitchell, his take on the most talked about topic in Oil Country for months now. In a fair and accurate assessment of the Oil’s salary cap troubles, Mitchell says we will see the team trade one of Leon Draisaitl (not going to happen), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (unlikely to happen) or Oscar Klefbom (likely to happen): “The Oilers will have less than $2 million for the No. 1 left-wing on the roster. • Edmonton sheds 4,600 jobs in January; unemployment rate holds at 7.2%

January job numbers are in and the Edmonton region took a bit of a hit.
According to a city labour report using revised figures from Statistics Canada, the Edmonton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) shed a total of 4,600 jobs in January. The job losses were in both full-time and part-time positions.
“Solid employment gains in the education and hospitality sectors were more than offset by job losses in construction, logistics and financial services,” the report said.

  • The two magic components of the egg

If you could only have two ingredients in the kitchen, you’d want them to be an egg.
That’s because the egg yolk and the egg white (stunning contrasts of shape, colour and function found in the same tidy package) are able to perform at least two very important food science functions that makes this simple food indispensable to cooks.
To wit, whites foam, making small things bigger. And yolks emulsify, binding materials that otherwise avoid one another. Videographer Shaughn Butts show

Large chunks of concrete are breaking off from Edmonton’s City Hall pool and engineers found the southwest basin corner is sinking.
It’s been operating over capacity, and access to the pool skimming system meant to remove debris from the surface was blocked by lights in the planters and not cleaned in 22 years.

  • Civil lawyer launches campaign for more court masters

An Edmonton lawyer is calling on the province to hire additional masters in chambers to help tackle delays in civil court.
