West LRT is in the final stages of design with council set to make key decisions separating key intersections from traffic.
So we asked Andrew Knack – the Ward 1 councillor who’s been knee-deep in LRT planning since his community league days – to be the second guest for our new urban affairs interactive video series. Knack has been involved in debates around the west LRT since he joined the Meadowlark Community League in 2007.
He was then elected to council in 2013 a

Notley: B.C. pipeline play 'an attack' on Confederation
British Columbia has threatened the very foundations of Confederation and will face the consequences, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said Wednesday.
Potential legal and trade actions are being hashed out at an emergency cabinet meeting in the Federal Building in Edmonton.
Speaking before the meeting, Notley said the B.C. government has taken direct aim at Alberta with its latest attempt to stall progress on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
“The government of Alberta will not — w -
Two new local restaurants coming to Highlands' Gibbard Block
Watch for two new restaurants to open in Highlands, now that the historic Gibbard Block has been purchased by new owners.
Home since 1982 to the La Boheme restaurant and bed and breakfast, the Gibbard Block (6427 112 Ave.) was purchased by Connie Comeau and her husband, Mike Comeau, in 2005. After shepherding the building through the process of municipal historic designation last year, Connie Comeau felt the time was right to move on. While retaining a piece of the business, Comeau sold the -
Graham Thomson: Premier Notley declares 'emergency' in potential trade war with B.C.
Premier Rachel Notley has just hit the panic button.
She called her cabinet together for an emergency meeting Wednesday afternoon to deal with what is threatening to become an outright trade war between Alberta and British Columbia over the Kinder Morgan pipeline project.
Notley didn’t use the word “retaliation” when she met with reporters for a photo-op before the meeting but you have to think it was going through her mind.
Notley has labelled as “illegal” and &ldq -

Paula Simons: Child welfare emergency awaits immediate action
How do you define an emergency? The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “A serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.” Merriam-Webster defines it as “an unforeseen combination of circumstances that calls for immediate action.”
So perhaps you’ll forgive Paula Simons if she’s more than a bit cynical about the “emergency summit” held in Ottawa last week to deal with Canada’s indigenous child welfare crisis -
Alberta cabinet to hold emergency meeting on Trans Mountain pipeline
Premier Rachel Notley will hold an emergency cabinet meeting at noon in Edmonton Wednesday.
The meeting will hash out the next steps Alberta will take in the wake of British Columbia’s decision to stall progress on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
Notley will not take questions following opening remarks to media.
Cabinet last met just 24 hours ago in the legislature. This meeting takes them instead to the Federal Building.
More to come.

A Grande Prairie man accused of posing as a teenage girl on Facebook, sharing explicit photos and videos with teenage boys, and attempting to arrange meetings with his victims will face numerous child sexual exploitation charges, police said Tuesday.
Alberta Law Enforcement Teams’ internet child exploitation (ICE) unit arrested the 34-year-old on Jan. 23 after a man lured and attempted to sexually assault a boy in the northern Albertan city.

Hidden Spaces: Inside the Donald Ross School bank vaults
There may no longer be any treasure, but under the stairs of Edmonton’s Donald Ross School there is still a space for it.
“No, it’s not possible to get locked in it,” says Geoff Holmes, manager of student transportation for Edmonton Public Schools, whose department now occupies the building. “The locks have all been drilled so no one can accidentally get stuck inside.”
Behind the iron doors, steel gates and combination locks, building maintenance materials now -

Albertans among most likely to end up in hospital from slips and falls on snow, ice
For all those pedestrians waddling like penguins along Edmonton’s icy sidewalks this week, a statistic to consider: Albertans wind up in hospital after slips and falls on ice and snow at higher rates than people in most other provinces.
Nearly 41 Albertans per 100,000 were hospitalized after slips and falls, based on statistics from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) covering 2011 to 2016. Only Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island reported higher hospitali -
Wednesday's letters: West LRT plan would disrupt neighbourhood
Re. “Citizens question updated LRT plans,” Jan. 25
Recently, the city’s transportation department recommended a very costly land acquisition to improve traffic flow with the LRT.
As the Journal showed, the east-side strip mall of Jasper Gates — including our only bank, TD, London Drugs and nine stores, doctors’ offices and restaurants — will be expropriated.
North of Stony Plain Road on 149 Street, another eight stores, Apache Seeds and a mid-sized a -
Researchers seek people for effects of cannabis on cognition study
If you have smoked five joints a week, every week, for the past year, then science needs you.
A research collaboration between Alberta Health Services, the University of Alberta and MacEwan University is studying 120 healthy Edmontonians aged between 18 and 35 to understand the short and long-term effects of cannabis use and its residual effects on cognition, motor skills and sensory skills.
It will also look at how people with mental illness are affected by cannabis.

Opinion: The science behind off-highway vehicle restrictions
There have been recent cries from some in the off-highway vehicle (OHV) community to “show me” the science behind restrictions on motorized recreational use.

The report is titled Ecological Response to Human Activities in Southwestern Alberta: Scientific Assessmen -
Editorial: Downgrading City Hall pool diminishes city
If the City Hall wading pool didn’t already exist, surely some dreamer would be planning to build something very much like it.
Even now, in the ongoing Edmonton Project, visionaries are pitching ideas such as a food-truck ferris wheel, portable river valley pavilions, saunas along the river, a gondola over the North Saskatchewan and an indoor park heated by a solar globe.
The idea behind the competition, funded by businesses and the public, is to develop a distinct landmark that is both fa -

No one has a clue how to unleash Connor McDavid on Edmonton Oilers power play
Oilers need ace shooters Draisaitl and Puljujarvi on off-wings. But where will McDavid then go?
The Edmonton Oilers power play has been the NHL’s worst for months now. There’s been no shortage of suggestions on what the team should do and not do to fix it. In the “not do” category comes this strong statement from TSN’s Jason Strudwick talking on TSN1260 radio, his take that it’s a terrible idea to have left shot McDavid set up on his left side half-wall, as op -

David Staples: Council gets it right with Jasper Avenue, City Hall wading pool
City council is moving in the right direction on two controversial projects involving major Edmonton landmarks — Jasper Avenue and the City Hall wading pool.
On Jasper — as part of infrastructure renewal on the street that is slated to start in 2019 — the essential change will be taking two bus lanes from the six- to seven-lane arterial road and converting them into more space for people and parking.
