Carfentanil deaths saw a massive 330 per cent spike year over year in Alberta. Meanwhile, the average number of people dying in Alberta from accidental fentanyl poisonings has surpassed one life every day.
The number of carfentanil deaths in Calgary alone between Jan. 1-Nov. 11, 2017, rose to 61 compared to eight in the same time frame in 2016, said the Opioids Substances Misuse Alberta Q4 Interim Report 2017 released Friday. The rate of carfentanil poisoning deaths per 100,000 in Edmonton rose

What does Darnell Nurse's rise mean to the Edmonton Oilers?
Game Day 47, Oilers vs Canucks
Darnell Nurse has emerged as a player, but just what does that mean for the Edmonton Oilers?
If you’re a close observer of the Oilers, you’ll need no numbers to convince you that Nurse has taken massive physical and mental strides as a player since Edmonton drafted him 7th overall in the 2013 draft. Back then he was a gawky, highly competitive kid who could skate like the wind. Put him into an NHL exhibition game and he might fly around haphazardly with -
Shania Twain, Foo Fighters, David Byrne among notable acts coming to Edmonton this year
Rod the Mod, Foo Fighters and the queen of country pop herself, Shania Twain, will be among the notable acts performing in Edmonton in 2018.
Things start off slowly in January, but pick up steam as the year progresses. Singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn will be at the Winspear on Jan. 23 with his latest release, Bone on Bone, while American rockers Stone Sour are back with their sixth album, Hydrograd, at the Shaw Conference Centre on Jan. 31. Toronto’s Platinum Blonde have a date booked at -
Onegin a sparkling, exceptionally entertaining production
Love, regret, and copious amounts of vodka flow through Catalyst Theatre’s production of Onegin, playing at the Maclab until the end of the month.
An indie-rock re-imagining of Tchaikovsky’s beloved opera, taken from Alexander Pushkin’s novel in verse, this version of Onegin quite wittily destroys the idea of Russian art being “heavy.”
Actually, strike that; there’s no way you could tamper with the somber themes that run through Onegin, but Vancouver art -
Bergmann Duo drawing on their wide range of repertoire
Professional piano duos who have devoted their lives to the two-piano or piano-four-hands repertoire are few and far between. Husband and wife piano duos are even scarcer. One of Canada’s best, the Bergmann Duo, are appearing on Sunday, Jan. 21 in a rare visit to this city for an Edmonton Recital Society concert at Muttart Hall.
For many years the Bergmanns were based in Alberta – indeed, Elizabeth Bergmann was born in Medicine Hat, where her parents still live. Her husband Mar -
Saturday's letters: Let audience decide on event for themselves
Re. “Shame on Citadel Theatre for failing to champion cause of free expression,” David Staples, Jan. 19
I wish to express my great disappointment and displeasure with regard to the cancellation of the speaker Jordan Peterson by the Citadel Theatre.
I have found attending Citadel Theatre productions have provided me with so many different perspectives with their various productions. Some productions that I wouldn’t have thought I would like have provided me with insight and open -
Opinion: Theatre's refusal to host is also freedom of expression
The fallout from the Citadel Theatre’s refusal to host controversial public intellectual and psychologist Jordan Peterson reveals the narrow conception of free expression that many of its most vocal supporters advocate. Often, there is a willingness to recognize the right when it suits expression that serves their interests, but a denial when it does not.
Peterson, originally from Edmonton, and a graduate of the University of Alberta, is best known for his opposition to the rise of “ -
Life and Times: Former Journal opinion editor David Evans loved ideas
Former Journal opinion editor David Evans was known for his thoughtful writing, a love of history and politics, and a far-ranging interest in exploring what the world offered.
“He was crazy for new ideas. He was like a dog with a bone,” longtime friend and colleague Peter Maser said Friday, one day after Evans died in hospital of pancreatic cancer.
“That’s why I think he was so well-suited to that job on the editorial board, because it was an extension of who he was &hell -
Last large contingent of Edmonton-based soldiers returns from Latvia
The last large group of Edmonton-based 3rd Canadian Division soldiers deployed to Latvia as part of Operation Reassurance returned home Friday.
“It feels great,” said Lt.-Col. Wade Rutland, who was the commanding officer of the NATO “enhanced Forward Presence battle group” stationed in Latvia for the last seven months. “It was great to be away on a mission, the first mission of this type for Canada, but coming home is always great.”
Their return marked the end -
Wine column: Great vegan-friendly wine selections packed with unfined flavour, colour, complexity and vibrancy
The demand for vegan friendly wines is increasing, and we are getting more questions in the shop about wine additives.
The answer lies in the specific fining agents used to clarify the wines. If a wine is unfined, unfiltered and no animal-based products were used in the process, it qualifies as vegan-friendly. Of course, this column is based on the winemaking and a vegan diet could also take into consideration farming process, such as fertilizer, corks, and seals such as beeswax.

Citadel Theatre apologizes for cancelling Jordan Peterson book launch
The Citadel Theatre apologized Friday for refusing to host a book launch by a controversial professor.
University of Toronto psychology professor Jordan Peterson found himself on the public radar in 2016 after saying he would refuse to use some proper pronouns for transgender students.
Citadel’s board of directors and management issued an apology on Facebook just before 5:30 p.m. Friday, saying it could have handled the situation better.

Man sentenced to life in prison after horrific LRT killing in 2012
A drug addict with a low IQ was sentenced to life in prison Friday after killing a man in a brutal and unprovoked attack on an LRT car in 2012.
Jeremy Lyle Newborn was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of John Hollar, 29, on May 6, 2016. He will be eligible for parole in 15 years.
“A man’s life was ruthlessly taken, leaving loving families and friends who will be impacted for generations,” said Manwar Khan, a witness who had tried to stop the assault, adding, &l -

Press Gallery #213: The Real Cash Money edition
This week in Alberta politics was, in large part, about cold hard cash. Join the Press Gallery team to talk about the latest party fundraising figures and the $1.3-million budget for the new election commissioner.
Host Emma Graney and guests Clare Clancy, Paula Simons and Dave Breakenridge also explore the United Conservative Party’s draft policy platform, including more real cash money for private schools and a flat tax.
The team also takes a brief look at the government&rsquo -
Onion Lake Cree Nation residents in court for sentencing of man who murdered two women
Dozens of people travelled to Edmonton to see a man sentenced Friday for the murders of two women from Onion Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan.
Gordon Rogers, 61, was given life in prison and won’t be eligible for parole for 17 years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the deaths of Jeanette Chief and Violet Heathen. He was handed two sentences, but they will be served at the same time.
When he pleaded guilty to the murders in September, court heard that although th -
Social media watch: Different interpretations of Disney, Brad Wall weighs in
Bows and arrows
A Disney classic featuring a cast of lovable forest animals became the framework for not-so-whimsical barbs between Premier Rachel Notley and United Conservative Party Leader Jason Kenney.
“I swear to God, if Jason Kenney was in the theatre 40 years ago watching Robin Hood, he was the only kid there that actually thought it was a scary movie,” said Notley Thursday, referring to the anthropomorphic fox who took from the rich and gave to the poor.

Paula Simons: Beating the Blob that corrupted the Edmonton Institution
Late Thursday, Correctional Service Canada announced it had fired another two staffers at the Edmonton Institution. That makes a total of six dismissals this month. Of the six, four were managers and two were correctional officers.
There are further disciplinary hearings pending and additional investigations ongoing.
The Edmonton Police Service and the RCMP are also co-operating in a separate, independent investigation into allegations of possible criminal activity at the maximum security -
Man gets 20 years for hammer-beating slaying of grandfather
A man who orchestrated a brutal beating that left a doting grandfather dead was handed a 20-year prison sentence Friday.
Suwastikh Kumar, 36, earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter for his role in the 2011 death of William Arthur Reid Hill.
After Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Donna Shelley granted Kumar credit for time served — he’s been in custody since his June 2011 arrest — he has 10 years and two months left in his sentence.
Several of Hill’s family members wer -
City council set to approve $6 million for new park in overhaul of The Quarters
Edmonton’s city council is set to approve an additional $6 million for a new park in The Quarters as the redevelopment continues to creep forward.
The borrowing bill goes before council Tuesday.
The park — with a grassy area, plaza and snazzy red tent-like shelters — will run along the new pedestrian way on the east side of 96 Street north of Jasper Avenue.
The city is funding upgrades to east downtown through a provincial tax-levy system, which lets Edmonton borrow again -
'It's like sound warfare': Mill Woods residents complain of loud hum
There is apparently a loud hum that can be heard in Mill Woods and no one is certain where it is coming from.
One person, who said he lives on Mill Woods Road South and 62 Street, tweeted that the noise is waking him up.
I'm on Mill Woods Road South and 62 street. I hear it sometimes 10 pm to 4 am. Some nights midnight to 3 am.
It's like sound warfare or something I swear. It wakes me up.
