  • Why (exactly) Connor McDavid needs to shoot more on the Edmonton Oilers power play

Oilers power play is now worse than Decade of Darkness levels
If there is one big ugly issue on the Edmonton Oilers’ power play, it is the team’s inability to manufacture one-timer shots.
One-timer shots have killed the Oilers when they’ve been penalty killing this year, as pucks have gone cross-crease or cross-seam against the Oilers ineffective penalty kill to set up that most deadly of opposition scoring chance shots, the dreaded one-timer.
    One-timers have absolutely hammere

  • Shumka's perennial Nutcracker offers a sugar plum surprise every year

Shumka’s take on Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker – a.k.a. “Clara’s Dream” – is a marvelous hybrid of the original ballet with a special nod to Ukrainian cultural traditions, but for the dance company’s artistic associate Joe Hoffman, managing all those logistics makes it something else.
“The scale makes it a monster,” he laughs. “But it’s a beautiful monster. We’ve really built up a family around this show.”

  • Opinion: Objections to medical cannabis 'dead wrong'

The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) recently published a statement reflecting their stance on medical cannabis, basically stating there is insufficient evidence to recommend it, and that adverse effects outweigh any benefits.
As a physician working in Edmonton’s only legitimate “physician-and-nurse-run” cannabinoid medical clinic, I must object strongly to this stance. I have an MD from the University of Alberta, with five years’ subspecialty training in anest

  • Friday's letters: Keeping time change makes for brighter mornings

The best part of the winter solstice is that we begin receiving a bit more sunlight every day for the next six months.
For the supporters of the idea of year-round daylight time, I encourage you to look outside at 8:30 a.m., and realize that if we had year-round DST, like Saskatchewan, that is how dark it would be at 9:30 a.m.
Likely not often thought about is that the time of sunrise is later as you move west in a time zone. Today, sunrise in Saskatoon would be 8:13 a.m. (if Saskatchewan had mo

Just a mammoth two points for Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night as they fought back against a couple of tough opponents, St. Louis Blues and Lady Luck, to eke out a 3-2 regulation win in a barnburner of a hockey game. It was an odd one as the two teams exchanged scoring chances for nearly 50 minutes without a goal being scored before exploding for five tallies over the final 10½ pulsating minutes. Twice the Oilers fell behind by a goal, rallying to tie the score each tim

  • David Staples: The best idea of the year? The Edmonton Project

The best idea of the year in Edmonton? My vote goes to The Edmonton Project, a competition that seeks not only to brainstorm visions for popular new attractions for Edmonton, but is dead set on actually building one of them.
If all goes well with the project, we could have a fantastic new attraction built in Edmonton in a few years, anything from a gondola running from Old Strathcona to downtown to a ferris wheel restaurant, where customers get a view of the river valley while dining on me
