With just a couple weeks until the end of the year, Edmonton Food Bank executive director Marjorie Bencz is confident that Edmontonians will help the food bank meet its 2017 goals.
This year, the food bank aimed to raise 325,000 kilograms of food and  $1,750,000 to support people in need.
As of Friday, the food bank had raised 61 per cent of its food goal and more than half of its monetary goal.

  • Councillors unsurprised by 'overwhelming' response to City Hall pool redesign

Northeast Coun. Aaron Paquette is leading a charge to keep the pool and fountains as they are at Edmonton’s City Hall.
He said he’s already heard from dozens of residents on social media and through email, people sharing anecdotes, photos and even sketches of a beloved, child-friendly space downtown. He intends to take pointed questions to administration Thursday, and if necessary, to a formal council debate in the new year.

  • 'Always a sense of occasion': Memories fill Northlands Coliseum as Edmonton says goodbye

On his 27th birthday Kent Strayer took in the Coliseum for the last time.
“There was always a sense of occasion,” said Strayer, whose memories include watching hockey games, going to concerts and attending YC Alberta, a Christian youth conference.
Strayer sat in the lower bowl of the Northlands Coliseum with Shauntae Manders, 27, Saturday morning and basked in the nostalgia of the arena while contemplating it’s future.

  • 'They should be here': Whitecourt remembers Ryder and Radek

Whitecourt — In the middle of a hockey rink being painted blue and green in memory of slain brothers Ryder and Radek MacDougall, a group of teenage boys reminisced about the mischief they used to get up to.
Two of Ryder’s best friends smiled as they remembered getting into trouble with their buddy: rafting on a creek and drifting so far they had to hike two hours to get home; and ringing neighbours’ doorbells as a prank before running off, jumping fences to get away.

  • Cult of Hockey game grades: Edmonton Oilers preserve 3-2 victory against Minnesota Wild

How often do you go 0-6 on the power play and still win?
I don’t recommend that the Edmonton Oilers try that tactic every game. But it, in a round-about way, worked out for them in an important 3-2 win over a Western Conference rival.
On the other hand the much-maligned penalty kill not only did the job, it came out ahead, thanks to a terrific 3-player effort that ended with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ wrister behind the Wild goalie for a short-handed goal, and a (this season, at least) ra

The good, old Edmonton Oilers of 2016-17 had gone missing for the first two months of the 2017-18 season but they now look to be back.
Edmonton has strung together five solid efforts in a row against Montreal, Toronto, C0lumbus, Nashville and, on Saturday afternoon, the Minnesota Wild.
Here are 5 things I liked in Edmonton’s 3-2 win over the Wild:
The Edmonton Oilers no longer look slow. In fact, I’m going to suggest that the idea this team is slow was something of a mirage. What wa
