It was Christmas in the man cave Saturday, as Edmonton Eskimos fans indulged their love of the team by purchasing worn jerseys, footballs and helmets at the annual end-of-season locker room sale.
Mike Brennan got in line at 9 a.m., an hour before doors opened to season ticket holders, in an effort to grab a $350 helmet once owned by Brandon Zylstra — the top receiver in the Canadian Football League.
It was gone by the time Brennan made it to the front of the line, but he was more than plea

Edmonton residents bask in unseasonably warm weather
Edmontonians might consider sipping beer outside on a patio thanks to unseasonably warm temperatures this weekend.
The thermometer reached 8 C Saturday, well above the long-term average of -4.6 C, while the projected overnight low of 0 C was much warmer than the -13 C average.
Sunday’s high is expected to be slightly colder, down to 6 C, with a low of -3 C, but so far December’s weather is a far cry from the biting wind and snow-covered sidewalks Albertans typically see. -
Lots of ballyhoo as Edmonton funicular goes into service
Earnest riders jumped aboard Edmonton’s new funicular Saturday to enjoy a scenic view of the river valley while coasting uphill and downhill 48 seconds at a time.
The $24-million project — formally named the Mechanized River Valley Access — launched with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the top scenic promontory south of the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald and a performance by local operatic comedians the PreTenors.
After an upbeat rendition of the song Funiculi, Funicula &mdash -
Edmonton agencies await their share of anti-gang dollars
While the federal government has announced $327.6 million in anti-gang funding, the amount Alberta will get and which agencies will be funded has yet to be determined.
Ralph Goodale, the federal minister of public safety and emergency preparedness, recently announced $327.6 million over five years and $100 million after that to cut gun crime and criminal gang activities.
A spokesperson with Alberta Justice and Solicitor General said the details of how much money will be allocated to the pro -
Edmonton needs dog blood donations: Canadian Animal Blood Bank
Edmonton-area dogs are donating a healthy amount of blood, but local stores of the life-saving liquid perpetually run low.
The Canadian Animal Blood Bank (CABB) — a national non-profit that provides the products to veterinarians across Canada — runs a donor clinic in Edmonton twice a month out of NAIT where animal studies instructor Michelle Spurway aims to collect around 20 units of blood each time the event is hosted.
Spurway said while the NAIT satellite clinic donates a -
Saturday's letters: Pearl Harbour had big impact on Alberta
The day Pearl Harbour was attacked, Dec. 7, 1941, marked the beginning of a plan to build the Alaska Highway to provide access to and protect Alaska from Japanese invasion. It was a mutually beneficial joint effort to serve as a staging route for the delivery of nearly 8,000 warplanes to Russia.
The work brought prosperity to Alberta, chosen as the headquarters for this co-operative venture. It made permanent friendships between the Allies and had a real impact on “The Second Fr -

Until the Edmonton Oilers get better goaltending, forget about it
Game Day 29, Oilers vs Canadiens
Perhaps the Oilers have died from one thousand cuts this year, but bad goaltending, a bad power play and a bad penalty kill have been constant issues all year, and they were again in Edmonton’s 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.
If those things don’t change this weekend in Montreal and Toronto, nothing will change for the Oilers.

Fire under investigation in west Edmonton
A fire in Edmonton’s west end is under investigation.
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services received multiple calls of a fire in a business at 158 Street and Stony Plain Road around 5:48 p.m. on Friday.
The fire was declared extinguished at 6:56 p.m., said Claire Harvey, a spokeswoman for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.

'Double-trouble bandit' charged after bank robberies
The “double-trouble bandit” is in double trouble himself after a joint investigation between RCMP and Edmonton police.
Mounties have laid charges — and more charges are pending from the Edmonton Police Service — after a series of bank robberies between Nov. 24 and Dec. 7, according to a news release from RCMP Sgt. Jack Poitras sent Friday.
Strathcona County RCMP made an arrest Thursday in Sherwood Park.

Extra safety measures added to 102 Avenue bike lanes near 125 Street
The city continues to tinker with the configuration of its bike routes, with officials reassessing the need for a left-turn ban from 102 Avenue onto 125 Street in the Oliver neighbourhood.
Revoking the ban came as a response to “recent concerns regarding business and community access at the intersection,” said Derek Logan, a city spokesman.
The city “reassessed the left-turn ban in the eastbound lane and concluded the ban could be removed after additional protective -
Wall escalates war of words to Rachel Notley's delight
Trade wars are usually never this much fun.
Or at least politicians aren’t supposed to enjoy them this much.
But Premier Rachel Notley seems very happy with the escalating war of words between herself and Saskatchewan’s Brad Wall over licence plates.
Notley, and Trade Minister Deron Bilous, have practically thrown themselves in front of TV cameras and microphones during the past few days to mock Wall’s government.
On Thursday, Notley made the unusual step of travelling dow -
Notes from the dome: Taking Alberta to Minnesota, liquor markups and duelling apology demands
Alberta’s environment minister travelled to Minnesota this week to peddle Alberta’s climate leadership plan.

Attempted murder charge laid in St. Albert after November fight
A St. Albert man has been charged with attempted murder after an assault sent two men to hospital.
The charges stem from an altercation that took place on Everitt Drive in St. Albert around Nov. 19, according to a news release from police Friday. The fight started at a home on Edinburgh Court.
RCMP said the accused and a 33-year-old victim are known to each other and the attack was not random. Neither the victim’s condition nor if he had been released from hospital were known Friday.

Paula Simons: Don't rush to demolish Coliseum without consultation
According to lore — or at least, according to what I read after a Google search — when a king of Siam wished to punish or humiliate one of his subjects, he would send that person the most passive-aggressive of gifts, a white elephant.
White elephants were considered sacred and beautiful and noble. But they cost a heck of a lot to feed and maintain. And if the king gave you a sacred royal gift, you couldn’t exactly sell the elephant, or regift it. You certainly couldn’t ki -

Brad Wall: Alberta protectionism to blame for ban on its plates
There has been some discussion about our government’s decision to require Saskatchewan licensed vehicles when companies from Alberta are working on new projects undertaken by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure.
