Albertans will no longer have to compete with automated software when they’re trying to buy tickets to the biggest sporting and music events.
Ticket bots, which rapidly buy huge quantities of online tickets, will be banned under sweeping changes to consumer protection laws introduced in the legislature Wednesday.
Bill 31 also protects consumers from retaliation if they post a negative review online, tightens the rules for high-cost credit lenders, and will require veterinarians to get appr

Statistics Canada census data reveals trends in education, labour
Trades continue to be an attractive employment option in the province with the number of young male Albertans sporting apprenticeship certificates about one and a half times more than the national figure, new Statistics Canada data revealed Wednesday shows.
According to the latest and final data dump from the 2016 census, the percentage of men aged 25 to 34 in Alberta with apprenticeship certificates leads the provinces at 12.5 per cent. The national number is closer to eight per cent, whi -
Wildlife: Edmonton ex-pat artist's dog-kissing app charts on iTunes
In Josh Holinaty’s first app Kiss the Dog, guess what you do?
That’s right: kiss dogs! That’s it!
Tap the randomly generated dog on your iPhone, the face at top kisses it — and poof! — a different cartoon dog appears. Head shapes, tails, colours — each dog is unique. Some wear glasses, others sweaters. And they all move a bit differently, expressing personality.
There is no strategy, no points, no further asks for money beyond the initial $1.39 -
Varscona Theatre Ensemble kicks off with Our Man in Havana
When local talent Mark Meer appears at the Varscona Theatre this weekend, he’s not merely amusing the audience with his impersonation of Queen Elizabeth II.
No, Meer and his fellow cast members (Belinda Cornish, Mathew Hulshof and Ian Leung) are launching a new theatre group, the Varscona Theatre Ensemble, with Our Man in Havana, the first of three plays in the troupe’s inaugural season.

Tribe Called Red adds Edmonton dancers to performances
There’s a special place in Tim “2oolman” Hill’s heart for Edmonton.
Reticent to discuss the recent departure of co-founding member Ian Campeau from his group A Tribe Called Red, the DJ and producer’s voice perks up when discussing the city, which has always been welcoming to the electronic and hip-hop influenced group. Slimmed down to a duo with remaining member Ehren “Bear Witness” Thomas, Hill sees the next phase of the Ontario-based Tribe moving onwar -
Farrell takes his blues to Memphis
Dylan Farrell has got to be one of Edmonton’s hardest working guys in show business after setting something of a personal record. During the month of October, he played no less than 27 gigs.
OK, many of them were not with his band. The guitarist put in numerous shows for the cover band White Bronco, played Blues on Whyte and still plays regular pub nights, solo with an acoustic guitar, or leading a band at On The Rocks for Sunday jams, or at Have Mercy on Monday nights. For a working -

'Bags of human excrement' not enough to kill Accidental Beach
Cloverdale residents were picking “bags of human excrement” off the sidewalks because of the accidental beach, said community league members arguing against any plan to make it permanent Wednesday.
But councillors heard so much support for natural beach formed just beside the Cloverdale neighbourhood last summer, they voted to keep exploring how to keep it anyway. They also pushed for tougher enforcement around nuisance behaviour next summer.

Wednesday's letters: Win or lose, Eskimos a class act
The call Jason Maas made in the western final has been heavily criticized and debated, but it actually does make sense. He had complete faith in his team and he was playing to win, not to tie and take his chances in overtime.
Regardless of the call and outcome, it’s the way the Eskimos handled themselves after the loss that needs to be applauded. They fully supported their coach and teammates, the general manager fully supported coach Maas and no one placed the blame on anyone else.

'I kept taking the bus': Edmonton man rides ETS about 90,000 times
Terry Seehagen is an oddity in Alberta’s car-centric capital — the only vehicles in his fleet are the Edmonton Transit buses he calculates he has ridden roughly 90,000 times.
Since he started buying monthly transit passes 44 years ago, Seehagen has averaged seven bus trips a day, including transfers, going to work, shopping or travelling to his home-away-from-home at the Edmonton Chess Club on 124 Street.
It’s not that he’s opposed to private automobiles. He had a learner -

Editorial: Little progress in child intervention system
“The secretive, convoluted child death review system would be a good place to start seeking simplicity and transparency.”
“Even the families of dead children can be in the dark as to basic information about their child’s death.”

David Staples: Council 'making rules on the fly,' Holyrood Gardens developer says
Confused, bruised and not sure if he’s willing to continue. That’s how businessman Raj Dhunna of Regency Developments feels after negotiating an agreement with city administration to build Holyrood Gardens — a 1,200-unit high-density residential development along Edmonton’s new $1.8-billion Valley LRT to Mill Woods — only to have city council vote Monday to send the project back to the drawing board.

Cult of Hockey game grades: Matt Benning & Cam Talbot help Edmonton Oilers win ugly over Arizona Coyotes
How the Edmonton Oilers ever won that game I’ll never know, but a win is a win is a win is a win.
To be fair to the Oilers, they did have 10 Grade A chances to 9 for the Arizona Coyotes, but the Coyotes dominated in overtime, when Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Darnll Nurse put on a display of how NOT to play three-on-three, but Cam Talbot and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins saved the day.Connor McDavid, 3. Student test results 'wake up call' for Edmonton public school board
Provincial achievement test results by Grade 6 and 9 public students — especially Indigenous children — are “troubling” and “disheartening,” some Edmonton public school trustees said Tuesday.

Public school earmarks 'found money' to help pay for school replacement
In an attempt speed up approval for provincial construction funds, the Edmonton public school board has stashed away $15 million toward a replacement or a major upgrade at an aging school.

New lease deal offers hope that 700 DynaLife lab workers will stay downtown
Edmonton’s major downtown DynaLife health lab has signed a new lease to March 2022, giving hope to those who want its 700 downtown employees to stay put.
