It’s a new Edmonton Police Service helicopter.
And what makes it even better is that, according to the latest police commission report into capital project costs, the new helicopter may be less expensive than what was previously budgeted.
“Current projections indicate that the project may be underspent by approximately $500,000 due to lower than anticipated equipment and installation costs,” the notes said.

Mind your mortgage: New guidelines to include tougher ‘stress test'
Homebuyers looking to qualify for an uninsured mortgage through a federally regulated financial institution will soon face a new hurdle. The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) will roll out revised guidelines for residential mortgage writing practices and procedures starting Jan. 1, 2018.
One change is a new “stress test” for uninsured mortgages, requiring the borrower to qualify at the higher figure between the five-year benchmark rate published by th -

STARS spokesman Mark Oddan said the air ambulance met EMS at Bonnyville Hospital around 3:30 p.m.
While STARS initially thought there would be another patient to transport, the 24-year-old man was determined to be in more critical condition, Oddan said.

When officers arrived, they found the three-year-old girl’s mother had allegedly been assaulted by her former common-law spouse, who took off, threatening to harm himself and their daughter.
Police found the suspect and his daughter in a Spruce Grove home on Thu -
Saturday's letters: Dental fee guide lacks teeth
Our NDP government appears overjoyed with the 8.5-per-cent reduction in dental fees in the new guide. This now means Albertans will only be paying 35 per cent more than people in other provinces for common dental services.
Hardly a windfall for Albertans! We should all be so excited as Health Minister Sarah Hoffman. What was missing in the press conference was whether the dental association would now be allowing their members to advertise their fees, which was the original intent back in 1997.

Opinion: Have a conversation about Eskimos name but fight real racism
Depending on who you talk to, the word Eskimo means either “snowshoe-netter” in Montagnais — or “eats something raw” in Cree. It is a 200-year-old Indigenous word from the fur trade era, which eventually had its spelling Anglicized and meaning slightly altered to “eaters of raw meat.”
Today, however, some Inuit and Aboriginal people find this Indigenous word offensive —like the words “Indian” or “Half-Breed”– but many -
Former French legionnaire, Edmonton Eskimo among police graduates
A former minesweeper with the French Foreign Legion who served in Afghanistan, Const. Marko Sabanovic was one of the graduates of the Edmonton Police Service’s recruit training class No. 139.
In a plume of pageantry and tradition, 29 police officers including Sabanovic joined the service’s ranks Friday at a ceremony at City Hall.
The new police boots pounding the city streets include a former Edmonton Eskimos player, a head chef, a firefighter and a street outreach worker.

Player grades: Bug-ridden Oilers bogged down in Buffalo
Oilers 1, Sabres 3
So much for traction. Two days after one of their most encouraging games of the season, the Edmonton Oilers moved on to Buffalo to face the slumping Sabres, losers of seven straight games.
Slump over. Predictably, the Sabres came out and played desperate hockey, outworked their flagging opponents for the better part of the full 60 minutes and deservedly skated away with a 3-1 victory. It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective, effectively throwing a wet blanket over E -
Do the Edmonton Oilers need a new coach as last gasp to save season?
After a game where the Edmonton Oilesrs lacked all focus and effort in losing 3-1 to the Buffalo Sabres, the team now has eight wins and 15 losses. They rank 28 out of 30 NHL teams.
Sportsnet analyst Drew Remenda talked about Edmonton failing to play its “A” game against Buffalo and instead playing its “B” game.
But that had more of the feeling of an “F” game.
Another one.

NDP plans big shakeup of Alberta's workers' compensation system
After spending the past week sounding like a Conservative premier promoting pipelines, the familiar social-justice NDP Premier Rachel Notley will be back in the legislature Monday.
Her government will make a point of looking very much like what an NDP government is supposed to look like.

Alberta group helps companies develop technology to drive autonomous vehicles
The black car slowly roaming a south Edmonton parking lot doesn’t look out of the ordinary, but the technology it’s testing could represent a giant Alberta economic opportunity.

Paula Simons: Accidental Beach could be drowned in red tape.
It appeared at the end of an Edmonton summer like a mirage, an accidental beach in the heart of the city. And for a few sweet weeks, we flocked there with our kids and our dogs and our picnic hampers and our volleyballs, to paddle and swim and play in the sand.
And then the snow fell, the ice formed and our beach vanished, leaving us to wonder if it would ever return.
Could it be more than an ephemeral marvel? Could we make it last?
That was Ward 8 Coun. Ben Henderson’s question -
