Alberta public school boards apply to be interveners in Saskatchewan Catholic schooling case
Alberta public school boards want their say in a Saskatchewan legal case that could affect how Catholic schools are funded across the country.
The Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta (PSBAA) is the first to apply for intervener status in the battle of rights playing out in the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal over school funding in the small Saskatchewan village of Theodore.
In April, Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Donald Layh ruled Catholic schools h -
TSN's Craig Button rips Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli: "It starts and stops right at his desk."
This in from TSN’s Craig Button, his critique of Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli: “A team that looks woefully slow against their competition, he’s the one that put this team together. He’s the one that’s made contract commitments to players long-term and said, ‘I think we can win this team.’ It’s not the case. So you can look at other places but there’s one person who puts together the team, and that’s the general manager, so Peter C -

Cleanup work is underway around a northern Alberta well site after an estimated 550 barrels of oil and water leaked out of a pipeline, the Alberta Energy Regulator says.
The release was detected Monday at a facility owned by Calgary’s Mount Bastion Oil & Gas Corp. 65 kilometres northwest Red Earth Creek, or about 480 kilometres north of Edmonton.
It’s the largest of seven pipeline spills reported in the area since 2015, all involving other companies.

Men must step up to end violence against women, CFL player says
When Keon Raymond was growing up, he didn’t understand why his mother stayed with his abusive father. So one day, he asked her.
“My mom’s reason was she just wanted us to know who our father was,” said Raymond, a former Calgary Stampeder who’s now an advocate encouraging men to oppose violence against women.
“She endured all those things over the years just so we knew who our father was. Which I couldn’t believe, but growing up in St. Louis, the majority -

New Alberta dental fee guide calls for 8.5-per-cent reduction in prices
Health Minister Sarah Hoffman and the Alberta Dental Association and College have reached an agreement on a revised dental fee guide that recommends an 8.5-per-cent reduction in prices for 60 common procedures.
The suggested reduction is nearly triple the three per-cent reduction the association called for when it initially released the fee guide in mid-August.
That figure wasn’t sufficient for Hoffman, who publicly blasted the association and demanded they “get back to the drawing b -
Alberta premier responds to criticism from Opposition over pipeline advocacy
Premier Rachel Notley says the arguments put forward by the official Opposition on pipeline projects would block Alberta’s economic interests.
“The kinds of arguments that I’ve heard come from members of the (United Conservative Party) would serve to isolate Alberta,” Notley said Wednesday, speaking from Ottawa.
The premier is mid-way through a cross-country tour to promote Alberta’s pipeline interests, including the expansion of the Kinder Morgan Trans M -
'Ghost particle' neutrino discovery to help explore Earth's core
A new finding by scientists — including two from the University of Alberta — about the dynamics of high-energy ‘ghost particle’ neutrinos could pave the way for a greater understanding of the structure of the Earth’s core.

Wednesday's letters: Santa's quick departure disappoints
I attended Santa’s Parade of Lights Saturday evening with my children and grandchildren. We arrived early to view the parade near the end of the route.
As it got busy, parade marshals and police advised the crowd that the entire parade would go south on 108 Street to disperse. We moved around the corner to view the parade as it turned south on 108 Street.
All of the floats and Mrs. Claus came past and the kids all around us were having a marvellous time. The anticipation of Santa coming at -
Oliver neighbourhood community recycling depot set to close
A community recycling depot operating in Oliver since the late 1990s will permanently shutter this week, but the city is open to offers to relocate it in the neighbourhood if private land becomes available.

Alberta Health to make announcement on dental fees
Health Minister Sarah Hoffman will hold a news conference Wednesday morning to make an announcement on dental fees.
Controversy has swirled around the issue since mid-August, when Hoffman publicly blasted a new fee guide from the Alberta Dental Association and College.
