    The Metro LRT line’s beleaguered signal system is to blame for two Saturday mishaps on the rail line, a city spokeswoman said.
    At 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the system directed a southbound train onto the northbound track near NAIT station, Katherine Sweet said Sunday morning. For a short time a northbound and a southbound train approached each other on the same track.
    “Fortunately, the failsafe mechanisms kicked in, and there was absolutely no compromise to safety at all,” Sweet said

  • RCMP warn against leaving idling vehicles unlocked

    Idle vehicles are the auto thieves playthings. 
    Mounties have issued a warning about leaving unsecured vehicles idling to warm up in the cooler months.
    From Oct. 1 to Nov. 9, there were 1,420 vehicles stolen in RCMP jurisdictions in Alberta. Many of them were idling, according to an RCMP news release.

  • Gas leak forces residents out of their homes in southwest Edmonton

    A broken gas line near 59 Street and 19 A Avenue SW forced residents from their homes on Saturday afternoon.
    Maya Filipovic, speaking for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, said fire crews were called for a gas leak around 4:38 p.m. on Saturday and seven units, including Hazmat, arrived on scene around 4:45 p.m.
    Filipovic said the two-and-a-half-inch gas line appeared to be sheared, although the cause was still under investigation. ATCO has taken the lead on scene.

    Two soon-to-be former volunteers with the Edmonton Police Service’s Victim Services Unit (VSU) are speaking out about a decision to move the units out of the city’s community police stations.
