Royal Canadian Humane Association Bravery Awards 2017
When two men were arguing in the Churchill LRT station in Edmonton, a punch was thrown and a man fell unconscious onto the tracks on April 7, 2017.
Just then, an approaching train signalled its bell and Christopher Sampson leapt into action.
He jumped onto the tracks, and with an unknown bystander, helped lift the man to safety. Sampson wasn’t able to get off the tracks, but the train stopped in time. Sampson received a bravery award from the Royal Canadian Humane Asso -

Julia Lipscombe: Giving son a sibling not high on priority list as family hits its groove
When I met my step-sons, they were 6 and 4 — old enough to be reasonably independent, attached at the hip, the best of best friends.
Now, Chile and Tripp are 9 and 7. And while they might fight a little bit more, and while their age difference might seem a little more pronounced, they’re still best friends. Still attached at the hip. Twenty-two months apart, a little unit travelling between their mom’s and dad’s houses. I think these boys will always share a special bond. -

Saturday's letters: Premier's mansplaining remark is sexist
The premier dismisses a comment because of the gender of the speaker, with the dismissive term mansplaining.
This dismissal is wrong, in either direction. I am old enough to remember the Alberta legislature when there was one female MLA: the patronizing condescension was dismissive, and appalling.
It is equally wrong, and appalling, to watch this in reverse today. But the premier can dismiss this letter: I am male.

Opinion: Reduce our greenhouse gases, but sell our energy too
The National Energy Board (NEB) released its updated long-term energy outlook recently with a pretty stunning conclusion — fossil fuel consumption in Canada will peak in the next two years. Yet at the same time, the NEB projects Canadian oil production will continue to increase through 2040.
These forecasts may seem counterintuitive, but in reality, they show us exactly how Canada’s energy and climate policy should work.

Overtime aces Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl struggling in 5-on-5 play
Game Day 16, Oilers vs Rangers
Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have been brilliant in their last two overtime games, scoring two sublime McDavid/Draisaitl jumbo combo game-winning goals. But the rest of the time? Not so good.
Edmonton’s top line has sputtered at even strength for three straight games, at least compared to the high standard they set last season.
When they were together in 2016-17, McDavid chipped in on 4.9 even strength scoring chances per game, while Draisaitl was a -

Putin adds his voice to threat Russia will stay out of 2018 Olympics, Adler reports
By PETER ADLER
Canada’s hockey teams may or may not have an easier time of it at the forthcoming Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, now that Russian President Vladimir Putin waded into the issue of what the Russians describe as International Olympic Committee’s unjustly rough treatment of Russian athletes who had failed the doping tests.
According to President Putin, it’s politics, pure and simple.

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
When I was growing up, the First World War was the war in our social studies text books. It had already retreated into the past, out of first-hand memory. It was a war to be studied. To write essays about. Not a war that seemed real to us.

Pot and politics coming to the Alberta legislature next week
Alberta is definitely going to pot.
But privately, not publicly.
According to a good old fashioned scoop by my colleague Emma Graney, the government will introduce legislation next week to allow the private sector to sell marijuana in stand-alone stores starting July of next year.
Thus endeth the big mystery over whether pot sales would be done through privately owned shops or government-controlled outlets.

Spirit of remembrance is year-round at Edmonton centre for veterans
After Saturday’s services, the bagpipes will go quiet, the wreathes will shrivel and poppies will fall off jackets en masse. The spirit of Remembrance Day, however, is a year-round feature at the CapitalCare Kipnes Centre for Veterans.

Alberta slams Ottawa over proposed split on marijuana tax
The provincial government’s plan to allow legal marijuana sales at privately owned stores has the business community optimistic about potential opportunities.
Less impressed is Finance Minister Joe Ceci, who was grinding his teeth Friday at the federal government’s proposed 50/50 split in tax revenue from pot sales.
“I’m not sure what the federal government is smoking, but I can tell you that’s not going to work for Alberta,” he told media.
