Game Day 10: Capitals at Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers won a critical game against the tough Dallas Stars on Thursday night, eking out a 5-4 win in regulation despite losing the special teams battle 3 powerplay goals to 0. Lots of good things happened in that game but judging by the reaction I read in some quarters of Oil Country, my post-game headline might as well have been “Panic in the streets as Oilers fail to beat Stars 5-0“.
Understandably people are grumpy with the Oil’s f

New party gets a new leader: UCP's leadership contest will finally be settled Saturday
Alberta’s conservatives will very soon have a new leader.
Years of dislike and an acrimonious split won’t be forgotten overnight, but the overwhelming support for unity displayed in a pair of July votes paved the way for a United Conservative Party that seems to want to work together.
Indeed, the former Progressive Conservatives and Wildrosers have already been sharing caucus space and news releases since the two came together and were given official opposition status -
Depeche Mode keeps it fresh on last stop in North America
What feels like a century ago, we used to head downtown in a big blue Plymouth and slip through the doors of Flashback with fake IDs, adding fresh meat to the hissing chemical smokescreen of the energized dance floor.
Religiously and without fail, Depeche Mode echoed through the strobe chamber as those in leather and black pantyhose thrashed about — an unapologetic soundtrack to the delightfully queer-fusion future reality emerging. The band was an important sort of proto-GSA with ant -

Saturday's letters: City council not so diverse
There have been a great many self-congratulatory articles lauding our new city council as diverse.
Calling a council that added one woman and one Indigenous man “diverse” is damning with faint praise. Recent census data says Edmonton has the second largest Indigenous population in Canada and 17.1 per cent of all new immigrants to Canada in the last five years came to Alberta.
Our council does not reflect reality and proclaiming it diverse obfuscates the issue. We can, should, and mus -
Opinion: Conflict in Spain is about taking back control
As reported by Western media, the pre-referendum situation in the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia was a state of exception in everything but name.
Sept. 15, the first day of the referendum campaign, was indeed a memorable day in Barcelona. Police raided the headquarters of major Catalan media outlets and the post office refused to deliver a local newspaper because of an article in favour of the referendum.
Spanish Guardia Civil raided offices of the Catalan regional government, ar -

Safety summit hosts unity gathering at City Hall in wake of attack on police officer, pedestrians

Paula Simons: Landmark BMO Building could soon be history
Since 1984, the striking Bank of Montreal building on Rice-Howard Way has been a downtown Edmonton landmark.
With its huge walls of glass windows, the granite-clad six-storey building stood out from the highrises around it. If you were walking by, you could see right in. And if you were inside the BMO, with its high-vaulted ceiling and its natural daylight, you didn’t feel as though you were in some dark, stuffy old bank.
Today, the once-proud building sits empty. The bank, its ancho -
