Human rights activist Muriel Stanley Venne can add to her towering stack of awards a unique Alberta first.
On Wednesday, she became the first Aboriginal woman honoured with a provincial government building named after her.
For now, the 142 Street building in Edmonton is in the midst of renovations; many of its windows are covered in plywood and signs around the property warn of a construction zone.
When completed next spring, the large, squat building on the corner of 123 Avenue

Weapons complaint draws heavy police presence in southwest Edmonton
A man was arrested after a weapons complaint drew tactical police to the Blue Quill area of southwest Edmonton Wednesday morning.
Tactical police responded to the weapons complaint at a home near 123 Street and 28 Avenue around 11:20 a.m.
“Police were able to resolve the situation peacefully, and now have a suspect in custody,” said police spokesman Scott Pattison in a statement just after 1 p.m.
Officers later picked up at least two shotgun shells from the steps of the h -
Roger Waters rages to classic Floyd tunes at sold out Rogers Place
You can’t accuse Roger Waters of sugarcoating his message.
While most other major acts are careful not to make their politics too obvious, there’s the former Pink Floyd co-founder, singer and bassist, projecting nightmarish, pop art images of Donald Trump during the song Pigs, or outfitting a group of kids from the Boys & Girls Club/Big Brothers Big Sisters with t-shirts that read RESIST, unveiled during Another Brick in the Wall Part II. Might as well get to the point, right?

Wednesday's letters: U.S. influence bad for Canadian retail
There are nine words that all Canadians must avoid giving credence to:”I’m from the United States and want to help.”
First, we had the total shakedown which was Target, then we had the complete sell-off of Sears Canadian leases and properties with the entire proceeds of that sale going to Sears Holdings in the U.S.
Now, we see the pressure from activist U.S. investors to force the sale of all Hudson Bay’s valuable worldwide real estate and know it will signal -
Repeat child porn offender may face five-year prison term
An Edmonton man reported to authorities for uploading, accessing and sharing child pornography on Google applications and Dropbox may face a five-year prison term.
In May, Clinton McArthur admitted to one count each of possessing, accessing and distributing child pornography.
At a sentencing Tuesday, court heard that material seized by police could be described as “hard core,” and involved children ranging in age from newborn to 10 years old.
McArthur, 34, already has convictions rel -

Access to Medically Supervised Injection Services Edmonton, known as AMSISE, is a coalition of 25 individuals and groups, including people with lived experience, community agencies, medical, academic, and public sector representatives.

The focus is on people with severe and chronic addictions, usually homeless, whose -
Kenney, Jean have different tactics heading to leadership wire
On Tuesday morning, Brian Jean held an eye-catching news conference that makes you think either he’s doing really well in the race for leadership of the United Conservative Party, or he’s doing really, really badly.
Jean staged his conference in front of Premier Rachel Notley’s constituency office in Edmonton with a sign declaring, “We can win here.”
He was alluding to a string of public opinion polls that indicate he is the most popular politician in Alberta &mdash -
'Homebrew' at remand centre means LRT killer will remain in Alberta Hospital
An Edmonton judge has ordered a convicted killer to remain in hospital for fear his mental health will deteriorate to the point he is unable to participate in his next court appearance.
In May 2016, a jury found Jeremy Newborn guilty of second-degree murder for the fatal beating of a fellow LRT passenger in 2012.
John Hollar, 29, died in hospital of blunt cranial trauma two days after the Dec. 28, 2012, attack by Newborn.
However, Newborn plans to challenge the constitutionality of Canada’ -
Ethnic diversity remains tough challenge for Edmonton council
Across Canada, only seven per cent of municipal council seats are held by visible minorities, according to a study of the 50 largest cities.
For years, Edmonton had just one representative among 13 councillors — Amarjeet Sohi, then Moe Banga, both in Ward 12 — despite having 22 per cent of its population from South Asian, Chinese, Filipino and other visible minority communities.
However, the needle moved slightly on a different front Tuesday, when Indigenous artist Aaron Pa -
Editorial: National politicians quiet on niqab ban
At most, only a few thousand women in Quebec wear the niqab, the veil that covers facial features except for the eyes, and some estimates say the number is even lower – only a few hundred. Yet these women are considered such a threat to social cohesion that the National Assembly has passed a law that could prevent them from participating in many basic activities unless they expose their faces.
Bill 62 requires that the face be uncovered when a person is either delivering or receiving a Que -

Player grades: Edmonton Oilers' popgun offence manages to milk Bettman point in Pittsburgh
Oilers 1, Penguins 2
“These two teams played a pair of exhilarating games last season, and there’s no reason to expect any different tonight.”
Did I say “exhilarating”? I musta meant “excruciating”.
This was one tough game to watch as the Edmonton Oilers spent much of the night struggling to find any room in the middle of the ice against the Pittsburgh Penguins and utterly failing to find the target when they did generate some chances. Just when it seeme -
Todd McLellan's bad call plus four more things about Edmonton Oilers loss in Pittsburgh
The Cult’s “Todd McLellan made a bad call” podcastIt’s not often that Todd McLellan comes in for criticism at The Cult of Hockey where we generally admire his man management, skill and confidence building and strategic decisions.
But it’s not often that McLellan plays Milan Lucic in overtime. Lucic is usually a solid five-on-five winger, but he lacks the agility and speed to thrive in overtime.
Right? This should be obvious, no?

Public school board prepares to deal with requests to rename schools
As some Edmontonians question why city landmarks bear the names of controversial figures, the public school board will prepare for requests to change schools’ names.
The board voted unanimously Tuesday to task its three-member policy committee with drafting a roadmap of what to do, should members of the public request trustees rename a school.
Board vice-chairwoman Bridget Stirling said the board needs clarity on how it would handle a request, “however rare it might be.”

Brian Jean targets voters on fence in final days of UCP leadership bid, says political scientist
United Conservative Party leadership hopeful Brian Jean is appealing to ambivalent party members before they cast ballots, says a political scientist.
“What he’s trying to do is focus on the numerous polls that are indicating that amongst Albertans generally, he’s significantly more popular, more likely to be elected, than Jason Kenney,” Lori Williams, associate professor of policy studies at Mount Royal University, said Tuesday.

The future of retail is 'micro malls,' says West Edmonton Mall owners
A member of the family that developed West Edmonton Mall and other giant international shopping centres thinks the future of retail could be small.

David Staples: Rapid buses better than slow LRT, new councillor says
To BRT or not to BRT? That is the question coming fast to Edmonton city council after an election where voters expressed dissatisfaction with the high cost, operational delays and traffic jams caused by the city’s new Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines.
Leading the charge in this debate will be new southwest Edmonton councillor Tim Cartmell, a businessman, project manager and civil engineer.

Edmonton real estate market looking stronger next year, reports indicate
Two reports on Edmonton’s residential and commercial property industry are painting a rosier picture of the market next year.
