Cult of Hockey podcast on Oilers loss to FlyersIn many ways the Edmonton Oilers played a strong road game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon.
The scoring chances were certainly close, 13-to-11 for the Flyers, with the Oilers slightly ahead on Grade A chances, six to five. If you limit an opposing team at home to five Grade A chances, you’ve put in a good effort defensively overall.
After giving up an early goal, the Oilers also battled back hard in the second

Cult of Hockey Player Grades: Edmonton Oilers can't bury their chances, slide 2-1 to Flyers
The Edmonton Oilers found themselves trailing a fifth consecutive hockey game, Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. It is a dangerous trend that probably cost the club at least a point, today, and ultimately has left the Oilers 2-5 on the season. It is interesting that the Flyers have quickened substantially, as a team, and thus are much better equipped to handle the Oilers speed than they have been in the past. In fact, the Oilers inability to win races to the puck in their own end led to -
Oilers unable to maintain momentum with narrow loss to Flyers
PHILADELPHIA — The Edmonton Oilers might have deserved better, but they didn’t get it Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.
The Oilers were hoping to maintain their forward progress after a 2-1 overtime victory in Chicago Thursday, and looked like they were headed in that direction when they wrestled momentum away from the Flyers for most of the final 40 minutes at the Wells Fargo Center.
But Wayne Simmonds broke their hearts when he put a shot past Cam Talbot at 17:45 of the thir -
Edmonton police shooting probed; man, 37, listed in serious condition
A 37-year-old man is in serious condition in hospital after being shot by police Friday during a west-end standoff following a break-and-enter.
The shooting is under investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).
Edmonton police responded to a break-and-enter near 171 Street and 83 Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Friday where a man had barricaded himself in the home, according to a news release.
Police evacuated nearby homes and secured the house with the help of the tactical secti -
AUPE endorses selling marijuana in publicly operated retail stores
The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees has adopted a resolution saying it supports the public sale of marijuana when the drug becomes legal next year.
The federal government plans to legalize marijuana by July 1, 2018, but has left many of the details — including how the drug will be sold — up to the provinces.
At its annual convention Saturday, members of the AUPE, Alberta’s largest labour organization, endorsed a resolution that “all cannabis retail outle -
AUPE endorses selling marijuana in publicly operated dispensaries
Attendees at the 41st annual Alberta Union of Provincial Employees convention have endorsed selling marijuana in publicly operated dispensaries.
The vote happened Saturday morning at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton as part of the AUPE’s three-day conference.
Members were asked to vote on the resolution that “AUPE adopt the position that all cannabis retail outlets be publicly owners and operated by the Government of Alberta or one of its regulated agencies.”

Justin Trudeau weighs in on Sturgeon River-Parkland byelection
The prime minister landed Friday night in Spruce Grove to throw his weight into a quiet Edmonton-area byelection.
Justin Trudeau visited the campaign office of Brian Gold, Liberal candidate for Sturgeon River-Parkland, the seat recently vacated by longtime Conservative MP Rona Ambrose.
Voters in the federal riding will head to the polls Monday to replace Ambrose, who announced in May she would resign her seat after the federal Tory leadership race.

University of Alberta deferred maintenance bill nearing $1 billion
With a deferred maintenance bill nearing $1 billion, the University of Alberta is channelling the immortal words of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy novels — “don’t panic.”
James Allen, associate vice-president of operations and maintenance, told a board of governors meeting Friday that even though the approximate cost of $938 million is high, it is a “shifting landscape.”
“As we conduct maintenance, as we do things with our infrastructure, that -
Saturday's letters: Voters need to follow the rules
Re. “Don’t humiliate our young voters,” Letters, Oct. 19
I must take issue with Randy Montgomery’s assertion that his daughter was humiliated by being told that she had to leave the voting station to remove the T-shirt of the candidate that she supported.
The rules are clear: no campaign signage on the premises, including outside; no potential influencing of other voters by the use of T-shirts, pins, flyers, or opining. I respect the preparation his daughter did to make a -
Opinion: Safe injection sites will hurt vulnerable communities
The news tells us the epicentre of opioid/fentanyl deaths appears to be situated in the urban core of Edmonton, specifically, in the communities of Central McDougall and McCauley.
The three levels of government created an organization named AMSISE — Access to Medically Supervised Injection Services. AMSISE applied to the federal government on May 1 for a waiver that would allow approved sites to provide supervised injection services.
The rationale given was “the spike in opioid-relat -

Edmonton Oil Kings edge out Prince George Cougars in shootout
The Edmonton Oil Kings have faced so many elite teams of late, they almost forgot what it was like to go up against a struggling club.
They were reminded quickly, however, desperate teams are tough to beat as well.

Tomas Soustal, along with scoring his first goal as an Oil King, scored the lone goal in the shootout for Edmonton, who have earned -

Game Day #7: Oilers vs Flyers
The Edmonton Oilers lost or let go some bottom line and bottom pairing players from their successful 2016-17 team — Tyler Pitlick, Jordan Oesterle, Griffin Reinhart, Brandon Davidson, Matt Hendricks — and during the four-game losing streak I was starting to wonder if Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli had made the right call on all of them.
With his speed, aggression and opportunistic scoring on the wing, the loss of Pitlick, 25, seemed like the most iffy o -

There were big expectations both on and off the field.

Eskimos running back Gable stabled after suffering tweak in practice

Provincial health ministers secure federal support to study universal pharmacare
Canada’s provincial and territorial health ministers announced Friday they have federal support to explore the feasibility of a national universal pharmacare program for prescription drugs.
The initiative commits the respective governments to jointly research how a pharmacare program might work, including potential costs, timelines to implement and how far the program should go to expand access to drugs.
