Rapid Fire Theatre, Edmonton’s largest improv troupe, has issued a statement distancing itself from its former artistic director Chris Craddock, saying he will no longer be affiliated with the theatre company.
“This week so many people around the world have engaged in a large conversation of sexual harassment and abuse; much of that conversation focusing on issues of sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry. The improv industry has its fair share of predators and we

Const. Chernyk back on duty, victim still in hospital: police chief
A police officer stabbed outside an Edmonton football game after being mowed down by a car is back on duty, while a woman later struck by the driver of a U-Haul truck being pursued by authorities remains in hospital, says the city’s police chief.
“That’s something he wanted to do the day after the incident — he wanted to get right back to work,” Police Chief Rod Knecht said Thursday of Const. Mike Chernyk.
Chernyk fought off a knife-wielding attacker after being run -
Draisaitl discusses concussion, may return to Oilers' lineup Saturday
CHICAGO — Leon Draisaitl is getting close.
The concussed forward took the morning skate Thursday in Chicago and says he could be ready to return to the lineup as early as Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.
“I’m starting to feel a lot better,” said Draisaitl, who’s missed three games with the injury. “I obviously didn’t feel right for a couple of days there. I still feel symptoms here and there but I’m getting a lot better from day-to-day.”

Conflicted about the merits of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins? You're not alone
Game Day #6: Oilers vs Blackhawks
Earlier this week, Sportsnet’s John Shannon engaged in the kind of mixed commentary on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins that is common.
On the plus side, Shannon said that if it came down to it and the Edmonton Oilers had to make a choice between RNH and Patrick Maroon, he’d keep RNH.
On the down side, Shannon labelled RNH as a “third-line centre.”
It’s a problem that Leon Draisaitl is out right now, Shannon said. “This is not a knoc -
New ridings for Edmonton, Calgary, fewer for rural Alberta, Electoral Boundaries Commission recommends
Edmonton, Calgary and the Airdrie-Cochrane area will each get an additional MLA under recommended changes to Alberta’s electoral boundaries.
If the recommendations are adopted, rural Alberta will see three fewer representatives in the legislature under the changes, with ridings consolidated in the province’s central northeast, central west and eastern parts.
It all boils down to the rapid expansion of Alberta’s two major cities, and the comparatively sluggish population growth -
Morinville man facing child luring charges
A Morinville man has been arrested on charges connected to child luring and using social media to make and trade child pornography.
Officers with Alberta’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit arrested the 54-year-old man on Tuesday.
“Our investigators seized a number of computers and electronic devices from the suspect’s home, which at first glance yielded some pretty disturbing material and online chats,” said ICE Staff Sgt. Stephen Camp, in a Thursday news rele -
Health ministers to talk cannabis, opioids during two-day meeting in Edmonton
Canada’s health ministers kick off a two-day meeting in Edmonton today, and topics on the agenda include the ongoing opioid crisis and the pending legalization of cannabis.
Deaths from opioid abuse are expected to surpass 3,000 this year, and the ministers say they need to compare notes on what is working and not working.
Federal Health Minister Ginette Petipas Taylor will join them on Friday to deliver an update on plans to legalize recreational use of cannabis by July 1.

Edmonton man found dead in ditch in Sturgeon County
An Edmonton man found dead in a ditch on a rural road in Sturgeon County Tuesday has been identified as 27-year-old Kevin Dean Damien Yellowbird.
The exact cause of Yellowbird’s death — who also had ties to the community of Ma-Me-O Beach — has yet to be released following an autopsy, but it is being treated as suspicious, police said Thursday.
RCMP Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Section are now investigating. -
10 things to do in Edmonton this week: Orchestrotica, Boo at the Zoo, and Roger Waters
Orchestrotica
The first concert in the New Music Edmonton season brings together chamber music, global jazz, and exotica in the shape of Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica. Think of them as the missing link between Martin Denny and Bach, or a lounge band pressed into service at a chamber concert. The quintet, led by artistic director and percussionist Brian O’Neill, digs through Bach, Gershwin, Shostakovitch, and a number of original compositions with eccentric arrangements and unusual instrumen -
Edmonton Oilers Game Day at Chicago Blackhawks
Oilers at Blackhawks6:30p.m., United Center. TV: Sportsnet. Radio: 630 CHED.
Five Keys To The Game
1. The real Cam Talbot
Talbot’s game right now mirrors his first month struggles in his first year as with the Oilers. He has 3.96 average and .880 save percentage through 181 minutes. He’s faced 100 shots and given up 12 goals. He has a career 1.97 average in eight career games against the Blackhawks and was 2-1, with a 1.88 save percentage last year. He badly needs a stand-out game to -
Thursday's letters: We get the city government we deserve
It would be a mistake for all incumbents to equate the dearth of electoral choice with general electoral contentment of the Iveson agenda.
Major project incompetence aside, the biggest failure of this regime is its non-existent fiscal management.
And what have Edmontonians to show for their hard-earned contributions? Untold millions on an unproven-in-need bike lane plan involving permanent road changes combined with a plan to expand the LRT in the face of existing unresolved significant system d -
Monday's local election results have lessons for provincial politics
He is the third-place candidate in a three-person race. His profile so low, he isn’t even included in some public opinion polls.
But it would be a mistake to ignore Doug Schweitzer in the race for leader of the United Conservative Party.
Not that he’s likely to win.
He will likely finish a distant third behind former Wildrose leader Brian Jean and former Progressive Conservative leader Jason Kenney.
“NDP organizers were active and young people showed up in droves.”

Led by food, booze purchases, Alberta credit, debit card spending rises
Spending on credit and debit cards in Alberta rose three per cent last summer compared to summer 2016, according to figures released Thursday by payment processing company Moneris.
The biggest increases were for restaurants (up 4.7 per cent) and alcohol (up 4.2 per cent), while outlays also rose for household goods (3.9 per cent) and entertainment (2.2 per cent).
The only area showing a decrease was clothing, down about one per cent. The company would not reveal the amount of money spent.

Downtown community groups react to approval of supervised injection sites
Supporters of Edmonton’s Chinatown and urban community league members say they’re disappointed with the Ottawa’s approval of four supervised drug consumption sites in the city’s core.
“We feel that it’s an extremely unfair decision, and not well-informed,” Michael Lee, chairman of the Chinese Benevolent Association, said Wednesday. “The basic rights of some communities (were) totally ignored.”
Alberta Health announced Wednesday that its feder -
Edmonton Oilers were much more resilient last season than this year's team
So far this season, the 2017-18 Edmonton Oilers have proven to be a much less resilient squad than the 2016-17 Oilers.
I’m not just saying this because the Oilers were a winning team last year and so far in 2017-18 they have just one win and four losses. I’m saying this because the Oilers have so far exhibited far less ability to bounce back from adversity.
How to measure resiliency and bounceback?
It strikes me that one of the worst things that can happen to a team is early in -
Kemp finding his offence in second season with Edmonton Oil Kings
Brett Kemp scored the most important goal of his Edmonton Oil Kings career this past weekend, in what proved to be the club’s biggest win thus far this season.
On Saturday, Kemp, 17, netted the winning goal with 19 seconds left to upset the Swift Current Broncos 4-3 in the third of a four-game road trip.
Swift Current went into the game with a perfect 8-0-0 record, while the Oil Kings had lost the first two games of the trip.
“It was a character win,” said Kemp, prior to the Oi -
FC Edmonton put damper in Jacksonville's playoff quest
FC Edmonton played the part of spoilers with their own playoff aspirations extinguished this past weekend. On Wednesday, FC Edmonton held the Jacksonville Armada to a 1-1 tie in Florida. The tie jeopardizes the Armada’s North American Soccer League playoff chances, battling with the New York Cosmos for the final post-season berth.Midfielder Jack Blake scored for Jacksonville, while striker Jake Keegan countered for Edmonton, who concluded their two-game road trip with a pair of draws.

Body scanner introduced to counter drugs, weapons at Edmonton Remand Centre
Edmonton Remand Centre inmates will go through an electronic body scanner to counter the smuggling of increasingly toxic drugs and other contraband into the lockup.
The scanner, similar to those used by airport security, takes a full body X-ray. The remand centre, which showed off the new equipment Wednesday, is the first correctional facility in Alberta to test the technology.
New inmates, transferred inmates and inmates suspected of having contraband will be put through the scanner, said -
Edmonton will keep growing, but oil booms probably over: city economist
Edmonton’s economy will continue to grow, but the boom times are over and unlikely to come back anytime soon, city chief economist John Rose says.
“We’re in a growth mode here in the city, as is the province as a whole, but people need to keep their expectations under control,” he said Wednesday following a presentation at the Art Gallery of Alberta to the Economics Society of Northern Alberta.
“When I say we’re returning to growth, (Edmontonians and other Alb -
Prized $50,000 rodeo horse struck & killed after being let loose: RCMP
The Mounties were investigating after a prized horse that appeared in Canada’s biggest rodeos was hit and killed on a highway near Bonnyville, shortly after a herd was intentionally released from a livestock pen.
Early Tuesday, someone opened a gate on a property south of Muriel Lake, RCMP said in a news release. About 30 horses, including a “prized” rodeo horse named Crazy Day Job — valued at $50,000 — escaped onto a nearby road.
The horse was one of th -
Paula Simons: Jurist Mary Moreau steps into a new role
Justice Mary Moreau has been busy, these last few days.
Last week, she was in Ukraine, offering counsel and advice to jurists there about how to set up a fair and open court system.
Monday, she was in Grande Prairie, where she admitted a new lawyer to the bar, in both French and English.
Tuesday, she was back in her office on the sixth floor for the Edmonton Law Courts, eager to take up a new role, as chief justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Slain St. Albert couple's son pleads with Ottawa to prioritize 'zombie law' bill
The son of two slain St. Albert seniors is calling for the federal government to prioritize a bill that would eradicate the “zombie law” that tripped up a trial judge’s attempt to convict the couple’s killer of second-degree murder.
“I know it’s rare, but the impact is significant,” Bret McCann said Wednesday.
He said it seems like “no brainer” legislation, and he’d like to see it enacted before another family has to go through what hap -
Treaty 6, Métis Nation flags to fly permanently at MacEwan University
Treaty 6 Grand Chief Willie Littlechild hopes more public institutions take the lead of MacEwan University to permanently raise the Métis Nation and Treaty 6 flags on campuses across the entire province.

Draisaitl and Caggiula cleared to go on Edmonton Oilers road trip
In the churning sea of negatives around the Edmonton Oilers right now, maybe they’re getting a sliver of sunlight with Leon Draisaitl and Drake Caggiula passing their medical tests to go on the three-game road trip to Chicago, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
