To say C.J. Gable has hit the ground running down the playoff stretch would be an understatement.
But the impact the veteran of five Canadian Football League seasons has had since the Edmonton Eskimos traded for him can’t be overstated.
In two games, he’s recorded back-to-back performances of 100 yards rushing. Make that three in a row if you include his final outing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before being dealt away for a pair of negotiation-list players.
His arrival in Edmonton c

Health Canada approves four Edmonton safe drug consumption sites
Health Canada has approved the four locations proposed for supervised drug consumption sites in Edmonton, Associate Health Minister Brandy Payne said at a news conference Wednesday at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
The sites will be located at the Boyle McCauley Health Centre, Boyle Community Services and the George Spady Centre, as well at the Royal Alex, the first hospital in Canada to have such a site.

#RIPGordDownie: Edmonton remembers a Canadian icon

Edmonton's traffic fatality number rises again as May death added to list
An 88-year-old man who died in hospital in May after an April collision in southwest Edmonton has been added to the list of city traffic fatalities.
A black 2010 Nissan Sentra was heading east on 77 Avenue approaching 105 Street when it went through a stop sign and crashed into a black 2009 Honda CRV travelling north on 105 Street, causing the CRV to spin around, mount a curb and slam into a street sign, a fence and four other vehicles, said police in a Wednesday news release.

Edmonton Opera stages first openly LGBTQ production with Lilies
Edmonton Opera enters uncharted territory in the Jubilee on Saturday as it opens its season with a new opera that has already been acclaimed by audiences and critics since its premiere in Montreal in 2016.
Lilies is an operatic adaptation by Australian composer Kevin March of the celebrated Canadian play Les Feluettes by Michel Marc Bouchard. In 2002, March saw the 1993 movie of the play directed by John Greyson, and had “the overwhelming sense I was watching an opera.” He discussed -
Wildlife: Remembering Gord Downie's mystery with some of his poetry
Like many of you I eased up shaking and crying today as the buzzing notifications our country’s trickster poet had succumbed to his physical curse. As tributes and personal “I-was-there”s to Gord Downie fill the electronic river (and thank God we were there — together — right?) I’ll just leave you with some words from his poem, Mystery — one of the luminous highlights of his book Coke Machine Glow.

Opinion: Methane management key to energy future
Alberta can shape the future of the energy industry, but will it?
As the world increasingly recognizes the climate impacts of natural gas production, Alberta as the first Canadian jurisdiction to commit to regulate better natural gas management stands at a crossroads to lead and benefit from dramatic innovation in the oil and gas industry.
Methane, the primary ingredient of natural gas, is a powerful greenhouse gas and the oil and gas industry is among the largest emitters. In Canada alone, comp -
The Edmonton Oilers are bleeding from everywhere right now
Well, that turned south in a hurry.
An Edmonton Oilers team that was listed among the favourites to win a Stanley Cup when the season began is now floundering all over the ice, desperate to win just one game.
Yes, it’s early. We are all being reminded of that on an almost hourly basis.
But with the 29th place Oilers looking worse by the game, and with Chicago and Pittsburgh ahead on the upcoming three-game road trip, fixing things while the deficit is still manageable has become an urgent -
Where is this council going? Some predict more 7-6 votes in the cards
Edmonton city council will have four new faces, but it might not make a big difference when it comes to votes.
Re-elected Mayor Don Iveson will be down a supporter in Dave Loken, who lost his north-side Ward 3 seat in a surprising upset. But Iveson may have gained a supporter in Aaron Paquette, who replaces retiring Ward 4 councillor Ed Gibbons in the northeast.
Insiders are predicting the new council will continue to tally 7-6 votes on contentious issues, just like the previous one.

Opinion: Red tape chasing investors away from oilpatch
Last week TransCanada Corporation, a major North American energy company, pulled the plug on Energy East — its 1.1-million-barrel-per-day oil pipeline between Alberta and New Brunswick — after the company said it would conduct a “careful review” of the cost impacts of the National Energy Board’s changing regulations.
It was the latest hit in a chain of bad news for Canada’s energy industry, and further evidence that Canada’s growing regulatory barriers m -
Cult of Hockey game grades: Have Oilers goalies made a big save yet this year?
Cult of Hockey podcast with one angry Oilers fans & the other seriously ticked offIt was Ground Hog day for the Edmonton Oilers. For the fourth straight game, the opposition team scored on its first or second scoring chance of the game.
And, yet again, the man in this Oilers net, this time Laurent Brossoit, went through the game while arguably not making a single big save.
It’s near impossible to win in the Dead Puck Era NHL when you spot the opposing team two or three goals earl -

Jones: Oilers fail to show up again in loss to 'Canes
So far, the Edmonton Oilers haven’t shown up for this season, other than the opening game, much beyond the extent that Henry Mack did for the Edmonton election for mayor.
For the last week or so, it seems like all the Edmonton Oilers have done is practice. Then they took the ice Tuesday evening against the Carolina Hurricanes and looked like they were meeting up for the first time.
The Oilers were running into each other, making passes to locations where no orange jerseys were in the neigh -
Carolina Hurricanes storm to early lead over host Edmonton Oilers, coast to win
Is it too early to panic?
Last October at this time, the Edmonton Oilers were 4-1. Now they’re 1-4, they’ve been outscored 19-8 since their season-opening 3-0 win over the Calgary Flames in the season-opener, given up seven power plays in 20 attempts in that time.
The Oilers are now hiking off on a three-game journey east to Chicago, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, where those teams are a combined 12-5 this season.
On Tuesday against Carolina, they fell 5-3, giving up goals early and of -
Alberta winds knock down trees, fell power poles, derail train cars
Trees were felled and a number of Epcor customers were without power after an “intense” low-pressure system struck Edmonton and other parts of the province Tuesday evening.
The storm brought wind gusts over 100 km/h in much of the province, knocked out the water supply in an eastern Alberta village and derailed trains near Red Deer and Wainwright.
Environment Canada issued wind warnings Tuesday for Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park and the rest of central and south -
David Staples: How to win a city council race with $1,200 in donations
Jon Dziadyk is in special company.
Fifty-four times incumbents have run again in Edmonton city council races in the last two decades. Only three times has a challenger come out on top. It’s fair to characterize every such race as David versus Goliath.
The only candidates who have slain the giant of incumbency were Stephen Mandel in 2004, Don Iveson in 2007 and now Dziadyk. On Monday, he beat out Dave Loken in a north Edmonton council race, 4,354 votes to 3,890.
So who is Dziady -

Oilers players share blame for goalies' rough start
Cam Talbot took much of the heat as the Edmonton Oilers stumbled out of the gate this season, giving up 14 goals in a three-game losing streak, but there is plenty of guilt to go around.
Seeing their goalies being lit up this season has the rest of the players in the dressing room wishing they were part of the solution instead of the problem.
But they are a big part of the problem which was clearly evident in the first period against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Oilers were slow, disjointed and -
11 Eskimos eligible for CFL's top rookie award in 2017
If it’s true that it takes one to know one, then the last Edmonton Eskimos player to be named the Canadian Football League’s most outstanding rookie thinks they just might have the next one on their hands.
Derel Walker enjoyed a breakout season after arriving to the CFL in 2015, spending the first six games on the Eskimos practice roster before a minor injury to Adarius Bowman propelled the six-foot-two, 188-pound Texas A&M product into a starting role. He went on to earn 89 catc -
Notley hoping PC minister turned NDP minister will win over Calgary
Sandra Jansen has made a political career of defending the underdog.
So, it is only fitting she has been named a cabinet minister in the Notley government to defend that most defenceless of all underdogs — NDP MLAs in Calgary.
That’s not her new title, of course.
Her new designation is infrastructure minister. And her official job will be to shepherd the government’s massive multibillion-dollar program to build, among other things, new hospitals and schools all over the place. -
Lieutenant Governor presents Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers
While Lezley Zwaal was honoured to receive a Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from Lt.-Gov. Lois Mitchell at a ceremony Tuesday, she was brought to tears thinking of the impact her work has had on veterans.
“We know it helps; we know it makes a difference for those who have served,” Zwaal said at Goverment House.
Zwaal said she gave her first quilts to three Canadian soldiers injured in Afghanistan in 2006.
Since then, Quilts of Valour has expanded across Canada, with dedicated -
Eskimos receiver's injury absence coincides with daughter's birth
If Vidal Hazelton had to sit out for seven games, it might as well have been these last seven.
In fact, the Edmonton Eskimos wide receiver couldn’t have planned it any better, making the best of a bad situation with some time off because of a hamstring injury.
“It’s been rough,” said Hazelton, who is scheduled to become available this week after coming off the six-game injured list but was initially placed on the one-game. “I came back out here and retweaked my hams -

Reports of child deaths, injuries on rise as watchdog secures more funding
Alberta’s child and youth advocate is seeing more reports of deaths or serious injuries to children who have been involved with the government care system.
The number of reports more than tripled in 2016-17 compared to 2012-13, when the province’s child and youth advocate began tracking the status of children in care.
“Each report is of a child’s tragedy (or) tragic circumstances,” child and youth advocate Del Graff told the Journal on Tuesday.

New mayors hope lunch and conversation help improve relationships
St. Albert mayor-elect Cathy Heron hopes lunch with her council colleagues Wednesday will be the first step in setting the formerly fractious group in a friendlier direction.
Heron, who easily won the race to succeed retiring mayor Nolan Crouse, admits the previous council of which she was a member was divided, but with only two incumbents returning she thinks this problem can be resolved.
“Even though council legally under the Municipal Government Act is a continuing body, essentially it& -

Municipal election sees mediocre voter turnout while more residents opt for advance polls
Edmonton’s lacklustre voter turnout was down from 2013, with the race for city council failing to inspire the majority of eligible voters to cast a ballot.
But given the lack of opposition to Mayor Don Iveson, who successfully sought re-election Monday, the 31.5 per cent turnout was “not unimpressive,” said University of Alberta political science professor Judy Garber.
She said voters may have been more interested in the non-mayoral races — “there w
