  • Holocaust lecture ever-relevant in face of nationalistic movements

A rise in nationalist and anti-immigration sentiments has organizers hoping more Edmontonians will take in an annual Holocaust lecture at the University of Alberta.
“The Holocaust started with that kind of philosophy, that it was ‘Germany first’ in the 1930s, and it gained momentum very fast. What was pretty innocent in the beginning turned into a massive killing machine,” said Dr. Leon Kagan, an organizer of the Toby and Saul Reichert Holocaust lecture.

It had been a stressful day serving in the Israeli army.
She hadn’t slept in days. She had been sexually assaulted. She reported the assault, but no one took it seriously.

“Maybe if I do something this serious, they won’t be able to ignore me any more,” she thought.

After years of preparation, an Edmonton company has finally received a licence to start operating the city’s first medical cannabis grow op.
GrenEx Pharms Inc. has spent about $4 million developing a 930-square-metre marijuana cultivation facility inside a former south Edmonton warehouse, but Health Canada only issued a licence Sept. 29 after initially approving the proposal in 2013.

  • Experts watch for new partisan or protest votes to drive voter turnout

Twenty-eight per cent — that’s what longtime civic election watcher Jim Lightbody is predicting for voter turnout Monday.
University of Alberta political science professor Judy Garber, his colleague, has a hunch it will be higher. She’s calling 34 per cent.
“(Lightbody) is probably right, but I don’t think he’s counting on the school board factor,” said Garber, pointing to a race that’s turning into a shadow partisan election. “That cou

An Edmonton lawyer has successfully pushed for the removal of a court-ordered publication ban on his own identity so that he can speak out about his experiences as a survivor of sexual violence as a young teenager.
“I never really wanted it in place. The reason I wanted it lifted is because I wanted to have the liberty to discuss the issue,” Pierre Asselin said during a recent interview, weeks after his attacker was sentenced.

  • Demographics, technology changing the face of Alberta's workforce

The country’s businesses must deal with an aging workforce and growing technology requirements to stay competitive, the Business Development Bank of Canada says.
A survey the bank released Monday indicated labour force growth is projected to shrink to nearly zero over the next decade, and most firms are taking steps such as offering more flexible working arrangements and relying on older staff to ensure they can find qualified employees.
Alberta’s workforce is expected to grow by 1.2
  • No time frame for return of Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl

Leon Draisaitl, who has a concussion, is still on the Edmonton Oilers 23-man roster, but winger Drake Caggiula has been put on injured reserve with an undisclosed problem.
With only 12 healthy forwards, the Oilers called up Brad Malone from the Bakersfield Condors.
With a game Tuesday at home against Carolina Hurricanes, then a three-game road trip to Chicago, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh starting Thursday, the Oilers needed an extra warm body so are bringing in Malone. He had a good training cam

    My take
If the Oilers needed depth at centre, and they do with Leon Draisaitl out, Brad Malone is as good a bet as anyone in Bakersfield. The fact is the Oilers forward depth in the Bake isn’t great right now, certainly not a centre and also not on the wing. For now, right winger Jesse Puljujarvi needs to work on hustling harder and re

After her parents went missing in 2010, Trudy Holder would cope with her grief by plucking the petals of a single rose, thanking her parents for a touching memory as she let the petals slip through her fingers.
“Thank you, Dad, for being my hero, and thank you, Mom, for being my best friend,” she said Sunday, holding back tears as she addressed an audience gathered for the unveiling of a memorial statue in their honour at St. Albert Place, two more petals fluttering to the floor.

  • Terry Jones: Where do Edmonton Oilers go from here?

    Two questions.
    What happened?
    And what happens next?
The opening game of the season was a near-perfect performance by the Edmonton Oilers. Cam Talbot opened with a shutout. The developing defence was dynamic. And Hart Trophy-winning 20-year-old captain, Connor McDavid, was brilliant with a hat trick featuring a goal fans around the NHL talked about for days.
The Oilers on opening night looked every bit the Stanley Cup contending club they were supposed to be this season. And in the three games t

  • Where's the offence for Edmonton Oilers through four games?

When you can name the goal scorers on one hand through four games, it’s not a good thing.
Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl, Kris Russell and Adam Larsson.
You’ll notice one salient fact from that Edmonton list; an absence of goals from wingers.
“The D have outscored the wingers 2-1 if you count Leon as a winger,” said Oilers coach Todd McLellan, who is paid to pay attention, also to look at stats.
Like the Oilers shooting percentage at even-strength, th

He asked his team to take a playoff approach, and in return, the Edmonton Eskimos earned head coach Jason Maas a post-season position on Saturday.
A 30-27 win over the visiting Toronto Argonauts secured the Eskimos at least the crossover spot in the 2017 Canadian Football League playoffs.
“That’s our first goal of the year,” Maas said in the post-game scrum. “No matter where you want to finish the regular season, you want to make the playoffs first and foremost. So it was
