Six people died in Edmonton fires last year.
This year, the message for Fire Prevention Week, starting Sunday, is “Every second counts: Plan two ways out.”
Clearly defined exits, with an alternate route in case one is blocked, could mean the difference between life and death, said Martin Landry, a fire prevention officer at Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said Thursday.
Cooking fires, fires caused by smoking materials and fires from electrical wiring accounted for 68 per cent of all ho

Violent, sexual offender freed to live in Edmonton area, warn police
City police are warning the public about a convicted violent and sexual offender being released into the community.
Gregory Ottertail, 40, is at risk of committing another sexual offence, said police in a Thursday news release.

Connor McDavid will get 130 points this year, predicts Hall of Fame writer
Cult of Hockey’s Oilers 3, Flames 0, McDavid a perfect 10 podcastThis in from Hockey Hall of Fame writer Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic, his prediction on Oilers Now that Connor McDavid will score 130 points this year, at least if he follows the path of Wayne Gretzky: “I look at Gretzky’s first year, he tied Marcel Dionne for scoring title, Dionne gets it because of the goal thing. Second year, he’s 29 points clear. Third year, 65 points. And then the next year, 76. So t -
Energy East cancellation leaves Rachel Notley 'deeply disappointed'
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says TransCanada’s decision to pull the plug on the Energy East pipeline is “unfortunate.”
TransCanada President and Chief Executive Officer Russ Girling delivered the company’s verdict on the project in a statement released Thursday morning.
The energy company has also canned its Eastern Mainline project.
Notley said although the decision was driven by a broad range of factors, it was an “unfortunate outcome for Canadian -
Graham Thomson: Doobie or not doobie: Framework for pot laws unveiled
If you’re old enough to get drunk, you’re old enough to get stoned.
That might not be a government slogan, but it pretty much sums up the nub of Alberta’s proposed marijuana laws.
Those laws have yet to be drawn up, but on Wednesday morning, Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley unveiled the direction the government is headed.
When possession of cannabis becomes legal across Canada next July, here are some of the proposed rules for Alberta:

New Pornographers deliver tight set at Edmonton's Winspear Centre
The crossover between hockey and alt-rock can be a tricky thing.
For instance, booking your band into the Winspear on the night that the Oilers have their home opener. While The New Pornographers brought out a good-sized crowd for the concert celebrating the release of their seventh album, Whiteout Conditions, there’s little doubt that the Vancouver-based alt-supergroup would have packed it on another day. Indie kids who normally would have bought a ticket were no doubt watching the game a -
Millbourne Laundromat Thanksgiving feast moves to larger venue
After more than two decades of serving turkey on Thanksgiving at the Millbourne Laundromat, the 25th annual community Thanksgiving dinner is moving to a larger location.
This Monday, the Millbourne Laundromat and the Rotary Club of Edmonton Southeast will co-host the dinner between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Leefield Community League hall at 7910 36 Ave., just a few blocks from where the tradition began at the Millbourne Laundromat at 109 Millbourne Rd. East.

Ward 6 candidates sound off on taxing vacant commercial land, derelict housing
Throughout Ward 6, revitalization projects like Rogers Place and the Quarters live alongside spruced-up heritage homes and historic properties. But empty lots and derelict houses can be a blight on the changing face of the area.
The city charters are expected to give Edmonton the ability to use tax rates to encourage redevelopment on vacant commercial land, such as the empty lots that line arterial roads such as 124 Street and 111 Avenue in Ward 6.
Kajsa Buck of the Westmount Community League s -
McDavid showed his warp speed to kill the Flames
Wayne Gretzky always had a sense of the moment and so does Connor McDavid, obviously.
At the Edmonton Oilers’ home-opener, with No. 99 in the house with his dad Walter, McDavid scored three on the Calgary Flames — his first-ever hattie here — and would have had four if Mike Smith hadn’t stoned him on the first shift of the night.
On a night when the Oilers looked in last spring’s playoff form, wrapping the Flames in a 200’x85’ strait-jacket, to where the -
Ward 5: Infill housing and lot-splitting remains divisive issue
The responses were swift and caustic when Ward 5 Coun. Michael Oshry floated the idea that property owners signing restrictive covenants to prevent their lots from being split should be taxed more.
“Shame on council for thinking to punish these awesome people for wanting to preserve their heritage,” wrote an online commenter after Oshry raised the issue earlier this year in a discussion about infill and higher density.
“How soon can we get rid of these bullies?” ask -
Thursday's letters: Vote wisely for city council
The Edmonton Raging Grannies is a well-known group of 12 activists on social and political issues, including the municipal election.
We have developed a list of criteria for a good mayor and city council members, which will guide us in our voting. We will vote for the candidates who:
Value the public good over developers’ profits;
Support racial, gender, ethnic, and age diversity;
Welcome immigrants and refugees;
Balance affordable housing needs with intelligent, respectful infill projects -
Q&A with Cadence Weapon: Song title Oliver Square now tastes sour
It’s been a few years since rapper Cadence Weapon (aka Rollie Pemberton) has called Edmonton his home, but he still keeps up on matters in the city of his birth.
Like the debate that began in late August when an online petition circulated calling for the removal of turn-of-the-century politician and journalist Frank Oliver’s name from the Edmonton neighbourhood that bears it. This was of interest to Pemberton, who had opened his 2005 debut album Breaking Kayfabe with a song celebrati -
Property tax rate in spotlight for city council election candidates
Richard Gendron is planning to move his business out of Edmonton as soon as the Valley Line LRT opens.
Ad-Mart has a prime spot on 75 Street, just across from where the new elevated Davies Station is being built. The LRT will bring new exposure, but he won’t be able to afford the taxes.
Already, property taxes have nearly doubled since he bought the property in 2008, driven by both an increase in the land value for his distribution centre and the city’s climbing tax rate, he said.&nb -

Jones: 'It's an exciting time' as Oilers open season
Wayne Gretzky picked up on it right off the bat.
Last year, on this day, Gretzky joined the organization as vice chairman in the morning and participated in the grand opening ceremonies of Rogers Place in the evening.
“Last year it was a different kind of excitement more tied to the building. Last year they were just hoping they were going to be back in the playoffs,” Gretzky said. “This year there are expectations. But there’s real excitement with those expectations.&rdq -
Player grades: Connor McDavid's brilliance lights the way as Oilers outshine Flames
Flames 0, Oilers 3
For the second year running the Edmonton Oilers got their season off to the best possible start with a convincing home-ice win over their provincial rivals, the Calgary Flames. This year’s button-down 3-0 triumph was in many ways the polar opposite of last year’s chaos-on-ice 7-4 win, save two important details: the Oilers were the deserving winner each time; and Connor McDavid was the best player on the ice, indeed the difference-maker, in both games.
Last year, e -
McDavid runs Wild on Flames with opening night hat-trick
After losing all four meetings last season, the reinforced Calgary Flames viewed Wednesday night as an opportunity to prove they can hang with the Edmonton Oilers.
Connor McDavid saw things differently.
So he went out and made sure the visitors understand the Battle of Alberta pecking order by scoring all three goals in a 3-0 season-opening victory.
Basically, he went all McDavid on them. And the Flames, despite adding a new goalie and a top four defenceman in the off-season, didn’t have a -
McDavid pots three goals to dump Calgary
Hockey fans in Edmonton and Calgary can admit it now, we’d been lying about the Battle of Alberta for about 15 years.
Pretending it was a rivalry. Pretending it mattered. Trying to convince ourselves and everyone else that the Oilers and Flames were anything more than an irrelevant B division sideshow that impacted little more than draft positioning.
But the Battle is back. Finally.
The teams are for real. The stakes are high. And there is a very good chance they will be seeing each other -
Residents don't 'speak developer': Ward 9 candidates debate Terwillegar traffic congestion, infill
Even competing against the Oilers’ season opener, Ward 9 residents packed their election forum at Archbishop Joseph MacNeil Catholic School on Wednesday night.
Transportation was a hot topic, with the five candidates promising a dedicated response to Terwillegar Drive congestion. Several stressed the need for provincial and federal grants to complete an estimated $1.1-billion freeway conversion.
Businessman and former peace officer Payman Parseyan said a five- to eight-yea -
Catholic trustee candidates tackle board cohesion, future of separate schools, at museum forum
Candidates vying for seven seats on the Edmonton Catholic school board crowded the stage Wednesday night of the former Royal Alberta Museum to field questions from teachers and other curious voters.
The all-candidates forum, organized by Edmonton Catholic Teachers Local 54, saw teachers pose questions to contenders from one or two wards at a time, followed by an informal meet-and-greet.
Teacher representatives asked candidates how concerned they were for the future of Catholic education, what th -
Charges laid after police shoot driver in fleeing vehicle that ran over officer's foot
A man faces 19 charges after a driver was shot by police during a traffic stop where a police vehicle was rammed and an officer’s foot run over.
The man was released from hospital Wednesday, according to police.
Two officers exited their vehicle near 44 Avenue and 211 Street around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in an attempt to arrest three suspects in a suspicious vehicle. The suspects’ vehicle rammed the police vehicle and ran over an officer’s foot. Both officers suffered non-life-threa -
'Hot-button issues' don't start a fire at Ward 10 forum
The “hot-button issues” of infill development and LRT expansion raised interest but little passion as five candidates faced voters at Wednesday’s Ward 10 election forum.
Former restaurateur Vieri Berretti, University of Alberta administrator Samantha Hees, U of A human resources and budget co-ordinator Sim Senol, incumbent Michael Walters and community volunteer Glenda Williams often had similar positions on issues raised by the crowd of roughly 200 people at L.Y. Oilers snapshots: Adam Larsson gets a letter
Adam Larsson is the first Swede to get a letter on his Edmonton Oilers jersey.
The defenceman, in his second year with the team after coming in for winger Taylor Hall, was named an alternate captain Wednesday morning, replacing Jordan Eberle, now with New York Islanders. He joins Milan Lucic and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, assisting captain Connor McDavid.
The Oilers have never had a European captain since they first started handing out A’s along with the C in 1985-86 but Finns Jari Kurri, E -
Oilers fans back in the game as team opens season on home ice Wednesday
The Edmonton Oilers 2017-18 season opened at home Wednesday in a Battle of Alberta against the Calgary Flames with high hopes for the team following a playoff run in the inaugural season at Rogers Place.
The puck dropped at 8 p.m. following opening ceremonies featuring a “we stand united” message flashed around the bowl during an introduction by Const. Mike Chernyk, the police officer who was attacked by a man with a knife outside the Edmonton Eskimos game at Commonwealth S -
Ward 9 forum Wednesday night — Interest builds in wide open southwest race
