United Conservative Party leadership candidate Jeff Callaway dropped out of the race Wednesday, putting his support behind hopeful Jason Kenney.
“I am confident in his leadership, and his ability to set up our party for future longevity. This is about bringing conservatives together and ensuring a strong, unified party,” said Callaway in a statement.
The move by the former Wildrose Party president means Kenney will square off with rivals Doug Schweitzer and Brian Jean. The

Robert Redford: 'Woodward and Bernstein are going to be reincarnated'
Forty-five years after Watergate, Robert Redford, who co-starred with Dustin Hoffman as one of the two Washington Post journalists who broke the story, says “history is repeating itself.” Reford was asked for his thoughts on the state of journalism during an interview about his latest movie. Fifty years since first starring with together as newlyweds in the classic comedy Barefoot In The Park, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford are reunited in the new film Our Souls At Night. Th -

Edmonton has recorded its latest homicide after police charged a 33-year-old man with manslaughter in connection with a fentanyl overdose death.
Police responding to a call for assistance found the 39-year-old victim, a Sherwood Park man, slumped over dead in a vehicle near Gateway Blvd. and 43 Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 28.

Twenty questions about the 2017-18 Edmonton Oilers
Game Day 1: Calgary at Edmonton
If you go by game results it was a successful preseason for the Edmonton Oilers, who swept three consecutive contests in the rookie tournament, then won six NHL exhibition affairs, the most victories of any club in the entire circuit. All of which added up to 18 no 12 make that 0 standings points, the traditional total for September hockey.
But now the calendar has turned and the games start counting for reals. As the old saying goes, points earned in October are -
Rural Alberta couple's $60M lotto win is largest in province's history
The winner of Alberta’s $60-million lotto jackpot had just scooted into a rural store west of Edmonton for some chicken feed when she discovered her family had won the province’s biggest jackpot ever.
Robin Walker and her husband Brett McCoy stopped in at the McLeod Trading Post in the tiny hamlet of Peers, about 177 km west of Edmonton, on Sept. 23, the day after the big draw.
“I ran into the store to buy chicken feed and some treats for my kids,” said -
Miranda Lambert brings heavy heart to Northlands
It’s been projected on video screens throughout her Highway Vagabond tour, but the phrase Music is Medicine seemed to take on a particular poignancy for Miranda Lambert on Tuesday night.
Still apparently reeling from the horrible events at a country music festival in Las Vegas on Sunday night, as well as the sudden death of Tom Petty (her pre-concert music was exclusively made up of Petty hits), Lambert put on a show that was by turns joyous, warm, rawly emotional, and rocking, taking sola -
Jason Kenney pressed on how attack suspect entered Canada on his watch
United Conservative Party (UCP) leadership candidate and former federal immigration minister Jason Kenney is facing questions over how the man accused of attacking a police officer and slamming into pedestrians in Edmonton was admitted to Canada.
On Tuesday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials said a man named Abdullahi Hassan Sharif was ordered deported from the United States in 2011. Sources said they believe that man and the suspect arrested after the Sept. 30 -

Council, mayor 'deserve to be re-elected' at municipal election: poll
A smidge over 50 per cent of Edmontonians believe the current council and mayor deserve to be re-elected in the 2017 municipal election on Oct. 16, a new online poll released Wednesday found.
Conducted by research firm Leger, the poll surveyed 500 city residents aged 18 or over between Sept. 28 and Oct. 1. A margin of error is not reported because it is a non-random internet survey.
Asked if the current mayor and council “deserve to be re-elected,” 51 per cent of respondents sa -
Airplane hits two deer while landing at Conklin Airport
The Conklin Airport was shut down Tuesday after an airplane hit two deer during landing.

The deer jumped out in front of the aircraft striking the propeller, RCMP said in a release.

Oilers Game Day: Battle of Alberta with Flames starts NHL season
Calgary Flames at Edmonton Oilers; 8 p.m. MT at Rogers Place, TV: Sportsnet, radio: 630 CHED
Five keys to the game
1. Stage fright?
There has been a lot of talk in the off-season about how the Edmonton Oilers are suddenly one of the favourites to win the Stanley Cup.
That’s a fair amount of pressure to be dealing with on opening night against a very tough rival that would like nothing more than to see those predictions crash on the rocks. It’s only Game 1 and already there is a targe -
Oilers' roster cleaned out since Peter Chiarell took over
To say Peter Chiarelli’s finger-prints are all over the Edmonton Oilers roster is obvious.
When he got his first look at the Oilers’ 23-man roster in his first year as general manager in 2015, he wasn’t in love with the opening roster, with winger Jordan Eberle out with a bad shoulder.
Change is always good. But from then until now, this has been almost a house-cleaning.

Edmonton police nab escaped female prisoners
Two female prisoners who escaped from the Edmonton Institution for Women were in custody Tuesday night after being arrested in downtown Edmonton.
Kelsie Laine Marie Mast, 23, and Samantha Faye Toope, 20, were recognized by a member of the public, who called police. Police located the women strolling near 104 Street and 102 Avenue at 8:30 p.m.
Both women are violent offenders with a history of weapons offences, police said. They had advised the public not to approach them.
At around 8:40 p.m. Mon -
A route more travelled? Ward 3 commuters look for better transit options
Each day of class, Mariam Hatim would cue up music on her headphones and settle in with a textbook during her one hour and 20 minute bus ride to MacEwan University’s west campus.
The same trip, from her house in Ward 3’s Schonsee neighbourhood, would take a 25-minute drive on Anthony Henday Drive.

The driver of a suspect vehicle during a drug trafficking stop was shot by police after ramming an officer’s vehicle and running over a member’s foot while attempting to flee Tuesday night.
Two officers exited their police vehicle near 44 Avenue and 211 Street around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in an attempt to arrest three suspects during a traffic stop. The driver was shot by one of the members after ramming into the police vehicle, running over one of the officer’s feet and trying to -
Ward 4 candidates weigh in on plan to overhaul Edmonton snow removal
When the snow falls, Yellowhead Trail is about as far as you can get from a winter wonderland.

“From what I see now … the Yellowhead looks like a dump all the time,” said Fuoco, manager of XPO Logistics, a freight company located at the corner of 62 Street and the Yellowhead, where the car accidents start to pile up after a significant snowfall.

Wednesday's letters: Police showed restraint in stopping rampage Â
There is an upside to Saturday’s attacks in Edmonton.Considering the increasing U.S. influence on and militarization of Canadian police, I was highly surprised that the Edmonton police force did not kill the perpetrator especially in light of the fact that a police officer was violently attacked.
I am quite sure that if this situation occurred pretty much anywhere else, the responding police would instantly use lethal force.Congratulations to the Edmonton police force for their professiona -

Jones: Anticipating an Oilers' decade of domination
There isn’t Stanley Cup Fever in Edmonton. There’s Stanley Cup Era Excitement & Expectations.
Yes, the Connor McDavid-captained Oilers are being predicted and projected to the top by The Hockey News Yearbook, the publication that spent a decade correctly envisioning bottom of the standings finishes. THN predicts Edmonton to end up in the Stanley Cup final against back-to-back champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

Expect Oilers' rivalries to bloom in 2017-18
There is nothing like a good, old-fashioned rivalry.
When two good teams loaded with toughness and high-end skill are fighting (sometimes literally) for the same thing, hockey is at its very best. Anger, hostility and high stakes turn a regular game into something special, games that can bring the blood of a fan to the boiling point.
And now that the Edmonton Oilers are relevant again, the feuds are beginning to grow and intensify.
Here are a few to keep an eye on as the Oilers enter the Nationa -
Editorial: Too small a world for smugness
It’s tempting for Canadians to view what happens in the United States with a degree of smugness. We have a front-row seat to perhaps the world’s most entertaining political theatre. With a former reality-show star playing the president, there is no shortage of idiosyncratic policies and personalities to amuse or astonish Canadians, whether it’s a dubious plan to build a wall on the Mexican border or the country’s peculiarly permissive gun laws.

Suddenly, everyone, everyone, everyone is incredibly bullish about the Edmonton Oilers.

Incumbent Don Iveson defends agenda during second mayoral forum
Sparks flew at Edmonton’s second mayoral forum Tuesday as incumbent mayor Don Iveson defended his agenda against a large panel of challengers.
The first question was about the new downtown bike lanes, with Iveson and candidate Gord Nikolic the only ones to defend them.
The second question called for a moratorium on lot-splitting in residential neighbourhoods. That garnered wide support, with candidate Fahad Mughal suggesting a moratorium on all infill, while Nikolic suggested Edmonton shou -
'Days of darkness are over': Fans excited as Oilers begin season as Stanley Cup favourites
Ah, fall, the time of year when the leaves turn gold, the air turns crisp and hockey fans start dreaming of Stanley Cup parades.
It happens every year in Oiler Country, a renewed optimism ahead of a season of glorious possibilities.
Too often, those buoyant feelings have proven ephemeral and illusory, quickly snowed under in a storm of lopsided losses.
This year, however, Edmonton fans can take heart. The blue and orange optimism may actually be justified. The excitement is real.

Oilers GM OK with Draisaitl starting season on the wing
Right-wing was the one Edmonton Oilers position in obvious flux when Jordan Eberle was traded to New York Islanders just before the NHL draft.
It remains that way because, while 77-point scorer Leon Draisaitl is lining up at that spot alongside reigning league scoring champion Connor McDavid to start the 2017-18 season, how long will be on the top line?
One game. Ten. Two periods once the regular-season starts?

Oilers send Slepyshev to AHL for one game
Anton Slepyshev will play in the season-opener, but it’ll be with the Bakersfield Condors.
Slepyshev, who sprained his ankle in training in Montreal before camp opened then came down with the flu last Saturday and missed a chance to suit up for the Edmonton Oilers in their final pre-season game, will get a test run with the American Hockey League farm team for a Friday game in Stockton.
The Oilers assigned the right-winger Tuesday, but it’ll be for a short time.

Man who brandished rifle at busy intersection pleads guilty to weapons charges
A man who admitted Tuesday to pointing a rifle at numerous people in a busy Edmonton intersection was “happy, smiling or enjoying himself” while he did it, court heard.
Glenn Justin Ironchild, 37, pleaded guilty in provincial court to five charges related to the events March 14, which ended when he was shot by an Edmonton police officer who feared for his own life as Ironchild pointed the gun at him, according to an agreed statement of facts entered with the court.

Elections Canada scrambles to fill jobs for Edmonton-area federal byelection
A perfect political storm has left Elections Canada scrambling to find poll workers for the byelection in Rona Ambrose’s former seat.
The Sturgeon River-Parkland byelection to replace the longtime Conservative MP is set for Oct. 23.
Advance polls begin next week, but they clash with the region’s municipal election.
That has left the federal elections body desperate to fill jobs in Sturgeon River-Parkland’s 200 polling divisions.

David Staples: Let's adopt Sherwood Park strategy, end photo radar cash grab
When traffic safety enforcement is done right, it’s a beautiful thing.
Take the case of Sherwood Park and Strathcona County, where five years ago, the local council axed photo radar, ended the cash grab, beefed up actual police enforcement and targeted problem drivers and hazardous intersections.
The new plan led to enforcement measures so effective and fair, they deserve a standing ovation from every driver in the Edmonton region, where too much traffic enforcement is pointless at best an -

Kailer Yamamoto sticks with Oilers, Anton Slepyshev optioned out, Chris Kelly does the limbo as roster "finalized"
Edmonton names 22-man roster to start
It was a training camp/preseason that featured exactly one surprise — the persistence of Kailer Yamamoto. The first round pick from the 2017 NHL draft, freshly turned 19, has survived the rigours of his first pro camp and has earned his way on to the 22-man roster unveiled by the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.

Jones: Nugent-Hopkins needs to have career year for Oilers
It’s the most important year of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’s career. The Nuge has to be huge.
If the Edmonton Oilers intend to be a reach-for-the-top team, they need a first-rate second line.
If coach Todd McLellan intends to play Leon Draisaitl with Connor McDavid for a significant percentage of games, then Nugent-Hopkins needs to have a career year.
