The court case for a pair of teenagers charged in an arson that left a five-month-old baby dead has been put over until late October.
Defence lawyers for Bronson Woycenko and Jessica Tammerand appeared on their clients’ behalf for a brief appearance Friday morning.
Woycenko, 19, is charged with second-degree murder, arson, and disregard for human life and mischief. He remains in custody.
Tammerand, who turned 19 on Friday, is out on bail and faces charges of arson, disregard for human -
NDP must halt 'job killing' minimum wage increase: UCP
Minimum wage workers in Alberta in line for a $1.40 bump in their hourly pay may be celebrating come Sunday, but the United Conservative Party is in no mood to bust out the balloons.
Interim UCP leader Nathan Cooper Friday called on the government to halt what he called a “job killing” plan to increase the pay for the province’s lowest paid workers from the current $12.20 an hour to $13.60 on Oct. 1.
It plans to up it again to $15 an hour on Oct. 1 next year.

MacEwan's new recording studio promises bright future
“It’s a rite of passage.”
That’s Paul Johnston, MacEwan University’s assistant professor and section head for recording arts, warning a new class of would-be studio techs that they are bound to get a few finger cuts if they’re not careful to tighten the fittings on microphone stands.
That odd occupational hazard is one minor detail in a thousand that Johnston’s students will need to recall in coming months from their workspace in one of two basement stud -
Julia Lipscombe: Lightning-fast little person incentive to go back to work
Months ago, back in the dead of winter, my mom group — me plus four of the smartest, most supportive, least judgmental women I know — would meet every week.
We’d lay the babies on the floor and proceed to eat pastries and drink cups upon cups of coffee. Sometimes with Baileys, sometimes without. Mornings could stretch into afternoons. The babies would sleep, feed, stare up at their mobiles. We’d talk about the babies and our lives and families and stresses and joys. We&rs -
'Wine is my life, it's in my blood,' says Italian wine maker Ivan Dogliotti
A winemaker’s style can be compared to that of a chef, musician, author or painter. There’s a common thread that characterizes/defines their craft. If you enjoy one of their works, perhaps you should seek out more.
Working in the wine industry gives us the opportunity to meet and sample with the wine makers, putting a face and a story to the products we sell. These wine ambassadors travel the world, tirelessly to market and share their passion for the wines from their home.

Police watchdog seeks phone video of Whyte Avenue arrest where man claims arm broken
Investigators are turning to the public to obtain cell phone footage of an April arrest on Whyte Avenue where a suspect later claimed city police broke his arm.
Police at the time said officers patrolling Whyte Avenue after the first Oilers’ playoff game around 11:15 p.m. on April 12 stopped two men for jaywalking across the Avenue between 105 Street and 106 Street. One of the men, a 27-year-old, was ticketed for jaywalking but, after “further interaction” with police, was arre -

Nickelback puts on energetic bush party with 18,000 people at Rogers Place
It was an odd pairing, to be sure.
Revered, somewhat eccentric hard rock/power-pop veterans Cheap Trick opening for the proudly formulaic Nickelback on the last leg of their Feed the Machine tour? What looks strange on paper actually came across quite well on Thursday night as two quite dissimilar acts shared the stage at Rogers Place.
Headliners Nickelback were off at a gallop with the title track of their latest, a jolt of tight near-metal that points at possible interesting new territory for -
Why do Connor McDavid's linemates change so often? Here's Edmonton Oilers coach Todd McLellan on McBlendering
One thing that sometimes confounds hockey fans is the way NHL coaches constantly switch up their lines. In the days of Craig MacTavish at the helm, this was known as the McBlender approach with Oilers fans, but the McBlender isn’t just a MacTavish thing. Many NHL coaches do the same, including Oilers coach Todd McLellan.
For example, last year, he started out games with numerous line combos centred around Connor McDavid, such as:
Lucic McDavid Eberle
Lucic McDavid Draisaitl

Infill 'pitting neighbour against neighbour,' Ward 5 candidates' forum hears
Candidates challenging for the vacant Ward 5 council seat attracted about 330 people to the S. Bruce Smith School gymnasium Thursday night.
While attendance at other all-candidates forums has been lacklustre, the gym was standing-room-only. Incumbent Michael Oshry is not running again.
In what was easily one of the largest crowds to date in the buildup to the Oct. 16 municipal elections, nine candidates were given their chance — if only briefly — to share their views on the top -
Friday's letters: Politics have long been part of sports
Politics has always been a part of sports. Jesse Owens’ four gold medals during the 1936 Olympics in Berlin defeated the flawed Nazi notion of a master Aryan race.
Donald Trump’s withdrawal of a White House invitation to NBA champion Golden State Warriors purportedly because Stephen Curry “hesitated” is reminiscent of the same racism exhibited by all countries from the time of the Second World War.

Edmonton failing to measure what matters on Jasper Avenue: health expert
When Karen Lee helped New York City give Times Square back to pedestrians, they measured everything from improved air quality to foot traffic and retail sales at street-level businesses to prove the temporary pilot should stay.
On Jasper Avenue, Edmonton is measuring driving times. That’s it.
It has Lee worried.
“People care about the health of their families, about seniors and whether they can safely cross the street to get to their bank. If we don’t capture that data, i -
Editorial: Kids' rights come first
Good on Education Minister David Eggen for putting his money where his mouth is. Or rather, putting the funds that schools receive from the Alberta government where its mouth is.
By promising to launch new legislation this fall making it illegal for educators to “out” students who join a gay-straight alliance, Eggen is finally closing a loophole that exempted private schools from an existing law requiring schools to provide a “welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning env -
David Staples: The politics of making Accidental Beach permanent
By the accident of good timing, Accidental Beach is an election issue. The beach popped up at just the right time to coincide with the Oct. 16 vote.
Located in Cloverdale on a natural gravel spit on the river, the beach formed this past summer as an unintended consequence of the new Tawatina LRT bridge construction. Massive rock berms were built on either side of the river to allow for construction of the bridge’s two piers. These berms slowed the river, so it dropped its load of sand -
Alberta Health Services signs $459-million deal for massive new technology system
The Alberta Health Services board has approved a $459-million deal with a U.S. technology giant to equip the health authority with an advanced clinical information system.
The agreement with Wisconsin-based Epic Systems Corp. includes the installation of software that will form the new Connect Care network, along with ongoing support and staff training.
“When you come to some of these large system implementations, there are really only a few vendors capable of doing something like this,&rd -
Oilers: Strome 'did a good job at centre' in exhibition play
Strome started on McDavid’s right-wing in camp, but Yamamoto, who turns 19 Friday, has played the last two games with the Oilers’ star centre. Puljujarvi scored two goals alongside captain McDavid last weekend.
“You need shuffling. It often sends messages to the team and the individual,” said McLellan. “I often change things after two periods if you’re not awake or contributing.”
Strome was centring for Jussi Jokinen and Caggiula on Thursday at practice. -
Live: Ward 6 candidates face off on downtown issues at forum
Ward 6 candidates agreed ending homelessness is a priority in the downtown core Thursday, but had different ideas about the best way to tackle the issue.
Incumbent Scott McKeen and three rivals — Bill Knight, Adil Pirbhai and Tish Prouse — were at St. Joseph Composite High School for a forum ahead of the Oct. 16 civic election.
The ward encompasses the city’s newest revitalization projects such as Rogers Place, the new Royal Alberta Museum and the new Walterdale Brid -

UCP candidates promise more private health care at second debate
The four candidates vying for leadership of the United Conservative Party want to give the private sector more of a role in health care.
From hip and knee replacements to improving seniors’ care, a UCP government under any of the four men on stage Thursday night in Edmonton for the second party leadership debate would look to the private sector to reduce wait times and improve the public system.

Expanded gay-straight alliance legislation 'a clear victory for LGBTQ kids,' advocate says
A signal from Alberta’s education minister that he’ll introduce legislation to prevent school staff disclosing which students participate in gay-straight alliances gained fans and foes Thursday.
“It’s a clear victory for LGBTQ kids,” said Kristopher Wells, an assistant professor of education at the University of Alberta.
Violating students’ privacy can put students at risk of harm, he said. If parents want to know their child’s sexual orientation or gend -
Oil Kings still in search of first win heading into three-game weekend
With 70 games remaining in their Western Hockey League season, it’s hardly time for the Edmonton Oil Kings to start worrying about another lost year.
Yet, with three games in three nights starting Friday against the Lethbridge Hurricanes (7 p.m.) at Rogers Place, there is a sense of urgency in regards to earning their first win.
Through five exhibition games and the first two of the regular season, the Oil Kings have yet to experience a victory.
“I think we know we have to start winn -
Terry Jones: Grey Cup committee looks to top 2010
When Brad Sparrow, Len Rhodes and Duane Vienneau walked out of the 2018 Grey Cup organization committee’s kickoff meeting they had no illusion the heat was on them to not just beat Edmonton’s bar-setting 2010 Grey Cup hosting.
But the co-chairs and executive director of the committee insist they’re going to bring the heat, not sit back and play prevent defence.
“We’re going on record as saying we’re going to beat the record,” said Eskimos President and C -
Oops: Jason Kenney lets UCP membership lapse, gets waiver to run for leader
After letting his United Conservative Party membership lapse, Jason Kenney had to be granted a waiver to run for leader.
Kenney’s membership expired in mid-August.
According to his communications director, Blaise Boehmer, it came to the team’s attention after the merger of Progressive Conservative and Wildrose party membership lists.
Boehmer said Thursday his team notified the leadership election committee immediately and renewed Kenney’s party membership.

Victor Valimaki wants out of MMA on his own terms
Over the last 16 years, Victor Valimaki has given the sport of mixed martial arts his entire life.
What did it give him back in return?
Some amazing experiences.
Valimaki was the first MMA fighter from Edmonton to ever make it to the UFC. He’s fought all over the world, but the sport has taken its toll on him too. At times, it’s beaten him up, chewed him up and spit him out – just like it does to many fighters trying to carve out a career in world of MMA.

NASL claim need for award of court injunction to survive
The North American Soccer League is depending on a court injunction for its survival.
Having had their provisional Division 2 status revoked by the United States Soccer Federation for the 2018 season, the NASL, which includes FC Edmonton, filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the American governing body of soccer.
Part of the lawsuit includes an injunction allowing the NASL to continue as a Division 2 league until the court matter is resolved. Arguments for the injunction are to be heard in -
Eskimos facing same Blue Bombers they began five-game skid against
The Edmonton Eskimos are getting back to right about where it all started to go wrong.
Or, at least, whom it started going wrong against.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers team that’s coming to Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday (7:30 p.m., TSN, ESPN3, 103.9 CISN) is the same one that handed the Eskimos their first loss of the season, one that snowballed into what’s become a five-game losing streak after after a 7-0 start.

If pre-season is any indication, Leon Draisaitl is about to prove that last season was no fluke, and that he belongs among the elite players in the NHL.
The 21-year-old has been a force at Edmonton Oilers training camp, displaying all the tools that made him a top eight scorer in the league.
“He always looks good, honestly,” said captain Connor McDavid. “He’s a big guy, moves so well, so smart. I can’t say enough good things about him. He’s looked great so far -
Riverboat renovations done, owner waiting for permits to open for public
The Edmonton Queen is ready to ride the North Saskatchewan River once more. That is, once the paperwork gets filed.
Jay Esterer has poured untold dollars into refurbishing the steel paddlewheeler from bow to stern since acquiring it at auction in May for more than $550,000. But he is waiting on a development permit from the city and an inspection report from Transport Canada before the boat can be reopened to the public.
“My plans are to open it to the public and have it be a venue for wed -
Oilers: Draisaitl assumes right-wing position alongside McDavid
You can only twist a coach’s arm so long.

He also wants to know why top political staffers in Premier Rachel Notley’s office had only a handful of sent emails and messages in their inboxes, despite their time on the job.

Mayor Don Iveson calls for new 'integrity commissioner' for City Hall
Don Iveson says, if re-elected as mayor, he will work to create a new integrity commissioner to investigate allegations of misconduct by city council.
Currently, if a citizen has a complaint about a councillor, they can approach the mayor, but the mayor has little ability to censor, said Iveson.
“(And) if the mayor does something wrong, there’s no one to go to … It’s a gap in our system,” he said Thursday.
Iveson made the announcement at a campaign stop at the Art -
Ward 6 candidates to face off on downtown issues including homelessness
Candidates hoping to represent Ward 6 will vie for support at a forum Thursday night, debating issues affecting Edmonton’s downtown core ahead of the October civic election.
Incumbent Scott McKeen is running against three candidates — Bill Knight, Adil Pirbhai and Tish Prouse.
The ward encompasses the city’s newest revitalization projects such as Rogers Place, the Royal Alberta Museum and the newly-opened Walterdale Bridge.
But those initiatives stand in stark contr
