• Edmonton Oilers will go with Yamamoto and players "on the edge" against Vancouver Caucks

Preseason Game Day 3: Oilers vs Canucks
The Edmonton Oilers are going with players “on the edge” tonight vs the Vancouver Canucks. That’s how Oilers coach Todd McLellan described it to the media today. It sounds a bit more interesting than it is.
Essentially, the Oilers are going with a line-up packed with players who will be in the AHL this year.
As sports commentator Jason Gregor tweeted out, the lines are likely to be:

  • Pharmacy college can ban loyalty rewards for prescriptions: appeal court

The Alberta College of Pharmacists says it has won its appeal in a legal fight over whether the college has the authority to prohibit pharmacies from offering inducements such as Air Miles and other loyalty rewards in exchange for prescription drugs.
The college said Friday that the Alberta Court of Appeal overturned a 2016 decision from the Court of Queen’s Bench that prevented the college from enforcing such a ban. The college announced the controversial prohibition in 2014, arguing that

Time to wrap yourself in your favourite sweater and enjoy autumn’s fresh crisp air and crunchy leaves, then dig out recipes for rich stews, roasted meats and fall vegetables. These dishes beckon a discussion on Rioja, the superstar old-world-styled red wines from Spain.
Rioja is approximately 3.5 hours north of Madrid and three hours south of San Sebastian, a region that attracts wealthy investors, state-of-the-art wineries and top winemakers (and Michelin-starred restaurants!).

Construction and investment from the wildfire rebuild and an expected recovery in the price of oil mean strong economic growth in the near future for Wood Buffalo, a recently-released Conference Board of Canada report argues.
The report “Moving Forward: The Economic Impact of Rebuilding the Wood Buffalo Region’s Economy,” predicts the wildfire rebuild and a rebound in oil production will boost the region’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 18.6 per cent in 2017, after the r

  • Dining Out: Luxuriate in a new but ancient discovery at Urban Venezuelan Kitchen, Àvila Arepas

We’ve been arepas fanatics around our north-side casita for a few years now.
With no templos of Venezuelan or Colombian cuisine available locally, you had to satisfy your craving for these small discs of soulful tastiness by hitting a Latino store for bags of Venezuelan P.A.N or Colombian Doñarepa — the white maize meal preparation ingredient — and making your own. Nothing wrong with that.
Now I’d like to report that our penchant for arepas were inculcated by trips

Still early but sounds like there is interest on both sides in getting deal done. Maroon coming off career year and on 97’s wing again, so term and $ may be tricky.”
On TSN1260 radio this morning, Rishaug expanded on this tweet saying: “

The suspicious death of a man whose body was found in an Alberta Avenue rooming house has been ruled a homicide.

Burnstick’s body was discovered Sept. 18 in a rooming house at 11119 94 St., the same residence where a 76-year-old man — Nexhmi “Nick” Nuhi — was fatally shot through the basement suite door only days before, on Sept. 13.

  • Edmonton parents peeved by school bus fees discrepancy

Just as Lita Bablitz’s youngest son was gearing up to start junior high, the provincial announcement came: they were cutting school fees to make life easier for families.
“It couldn’t have come at a better time for us. We were going to have two kids riding ETS (Edmonton Transit Service) — and then we were cut out of the deal,” Bablitz said.

  • Opinion: Convenience stores a better option for pot retailing

In July 2018, the federal government will legalize the production and distribution of cannabis. Between now and then, the provinces and territories will have to decide how to adapt to this legislation.
Whether or not one agrees with legalization, everyone can agree that when it happens, the systems that the provinces put in place should promote the goals of legalization that, if realized, will be positive. Through its legislation, the federal government aims to move cannabis from the illegal mar
  • Meet the 12 mayoral candidates challenging Don Iveson

One challenger wants to build a fusion reactor outside Edmonton, another would explore year-round greenhouses and a third would start a women’s professional hockey team to save Northlands Coliseum.
Those are a few of the more original ideas coming from the 12 people challenging Don Iveson in his re-election bid for mayor. Nearly all of them they would scrap the downtown bike lanes and point to Edmonton’s challenges on key infrastructure projects as the reason they’re running.

  • Friday's letters: Tax changes unfair to self-employed

To refer to the proposed tax changes as “closing loopholes” is misleading, as is the inference that all small business owners are attempting to circumvent taxes.
The majority of small business owners and professionals who incorporate do so to defer taxes, but tax deferral infers that taxes are paid when the income is used by the owner.
A professional such as my wife did not incorporate or make a decent living wage until she completed her residency in her mid-30s. Where individu
  • Oilers notes: Too early to tell with Jesse Puljujarvi

There is some intense debate taking place in Oil Country regarding Jesse Puljujarvi’s performance in training camp, which comes as a bit of a surprise to Todd McLellan given that there’s basically nothing to judge yet.
The Oilers head coach understands that everyone is anxious for conclusions — has the 19-year-old fourth overall draft picked improved enough to make the team or should he be sent down for more seasoning? — but says any conclusions drawn at this point are wi
  • Two of Canada's brightest indie acts bringing it to Edmonton soon

Next week, Edmonton welcomes two of Canada’s brightest indie acts. Fronted by powerhouse women, the band Austra and Lisa LeBlanc have been charming both critics and club crowds — nationwide and abroad — for years. Not yet household names, they’re more than deserving of a spin in your home, nevertheless.
Stylistically, they don’t have many similarities — a synth-pop band fronted by an opera-trained Toronto DJ, and an Acadian alt-folk singer-songwriter who belts
  • Oilers fourth line plans on making a big impact

While most of the attention will be on Edmonton’s top two lines this season, where Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will be the driving forces, don’t be surprised if the bottom of the Oilers lineup makes a little noise.
    Or a lot.
With a unique combination of speed, size, savvy, grit, and goal scoring ability, the trio of Mark Letestu, Zack Kassian and Jujhar Khaira has the potential to make big impact this season.
In fact, Kassian is coming right out and saying it: They could be the
  • City rejects effort to subdivide former mayor's Viewpoint property

City planning officials have blocked a developer’s infill plan for the historic property of former mayor Joe Clarke.
The house at 7852 Jasper Ave. is full of mould and needs to be torn down anyway. But neighbours protested a plan to subdivide the property for two narrow homes.
On Thursday, city officials ruled in the favour of the residents. Planners said the property can’t be subdivided because the two narrow homes would not be able to conform to the heritage requirements of t

A mother and son charged with first-degree murder in the death of an Alberta farmer wept Thursday as an Edmonton judge ruled they would both be released on bail.
Helen Naslund, 53, and Neil Naslund, 25, are both charged with first-degree murder and offering an indignity to a dead body in connection with the death of Miles Naslund.
The remains of the 49-year-old, who has been missing since 2011, were discovered in a body of water on his family’s farm near Holden, Alta., earlier this month.
  • David Staples: West Edmonton wants mass transit, but maybe not LRT

I never expected Edmontonians to turn against LRT expansion, but that’s what is starting to happen.
Candidates across the city in the Oct. 16 civic election say they’re hearing major concerns about the high cost of LRT construction and about the delays LRT causes when it jams up traffic. The trains often block intersections for lengthy intervals on the NAIT and south-side lines.
The uncertainty around LRT even exists in Edmonton’s west end, which after a decades-long wait
