With children going back to school, Edmonton’s breakfast programs are gearing up once again. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Why do some children come to school without eating breakfast?
“It’s very clear it’s not just an economic issue,” said Kristine Kowalchuk of the Edmonton student breakfast and lunch program Food For Thought. Nonetheless, money is often the main reason associated with breakfast programs. An Alberta government guide on breakfast programs g

MacEwan University not the only online scam victim
An estimated $30 million — including $11.8 million from MacEwan University — has been stolen from Canadian entities since the start of this year using an online scam called business email compromise (BEC).
The multimillion-dollar theft from Edmonton’s second largest university last month almost single-handedly equals the total loss of $12.8 million reported by Canadian businesses in all of 2016 by fraudsters.
Since 2013, fraudsters have duped Canadian companies of $95 million u -

World-renowned purgers the Minimalists are not here to judge you, or tell you to get rid of your stamp collection. Nor, as successful booksellers, are they opposed to capitalism or physical objects.

'It sucks': Connor McDavid on seeing friends getting traded away
When the Edmonton Oilers congregate for the opening of training camp next week, Connor McDavid’s mind will momentarily wander back to September 2015.
At that time, as the much ballyhooed 18-year-old rookie came to a new town, a new environment, a new league, a new life, two former first-rounders took him under their wings.
There was Taylor Hall, who welcomed McDavid as his roommate with open arms.

Saturday's letters: Remember project delays at ballot box
Re. “Bridge, bike-lane work brings construction hell to Glenora businesses,” David Staples, Sept. 6
The glaring lack of project-management skills and expertise regarding major construction projects has been scandalous in terms of delays, costs, and excuses for non-completion.
There is something systemically wrong with the city’s tendering and management of major projects – the cheapest price doesn’t necessarily equate to the best value.

Opinion: Sport has power to bring diverse people together
The National Football League is making news not just because the league starts play this week, but because of who is not playing.
Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who refuses to stand for the national anthem, has not been signed by any team. Many observers believe that Kaepernick’s kneeling during the anthem, to protest police brutality and racial oppression, has led to him being blackballed. Other players have followed Kaepernick’s lead and several groups have organized demonstrations -

Jones: Eskimos getting healthy for rematch with Stampeders
Hope, which takes many forms, is the No. 1 thing to sell in sport.
A coach gets fired. A coach gets hired. A trade gets made. A high draft pick joins the organization. A free agent gets signed. A productive prospect gets called up from the minor leagues.
Friday for the Edmonton Eskimos, embarrassed losers of their last three games after starting the season 7-0, hope came in the form of a single sheet of paper, albeit one with printing on both sides.
The day before a game, coaches in the CFL are -

Kailer Yamamoto impresses but Chad Butcher does the scoring as Edmonton Oilers' rookies top Flames 4-2

All in all a successful first outing for Edmonton Oilers’ hopefuls as they rode a three-goal outburst early in the third period all the way to the finish line to topped Calgary Flames’ wannabes, 4-2.
The game was billed as “men against boys” and to a degree it played out that way as the Flames did most of the heavy hitting, but the Oilers kept on ticking. Three times an Oiler picked himself off the ice after getting smoked to make a key contributi -

Mayor's plan for provincial park in southwest Edmonton backed by Enoch Cree Nation
Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson is lobbying for the creation of a new provincial park within city boundaries — one that would give residents access to a “phenomenal” natural area and create opportunity for cultural tourism.
The river valley park would protect the southwest Big Island-Woodbend area and could be co-managed with the Enoch Cree Nation, since it overlaps with reserve land the Cree nation was forced to give up in the early 1900s.

All eyes on Yamamoto but Butcher leads Oiler prospects
PENTICTON, B.C. — Imitation is the finest form of flattery so, yes, Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli was thinking of Calgary Flames dancing winger Johnny Gaudreau as he eyeballed Kailer Yamamoto heading into the June NHL draft in Chicago.
Chiarelli was always big on the small Yamamoto as he scouted him.
And there were lots of viewings of the kid who was five-foot-eight and 146 pounds back then.
“He does have some of that (Gaudreau) in his game,” said Chiarelli, who was seeing -
