• Ward 12: Southeast voters back to polls after 2016 byelection

Ward 12 in Edmonton’s southeast corner is home to suburban neighbourhoods made up mainly of cul-de-sacs and low-rise homes, with residents opting to commute to work in family vehicles over public transit.
Neatly planned neighbourhoods skirting the city’s edge are scattered with small parks and green spaces. Roughly the shape of a backwards L, the ward’s lower portion runs southeast of Anthony Henday Drive encompassing neighbourhoods such as Ellerslie. The upper
  • Ward 11: A microcosm of Edmonton's hot button issues in southeast ward

Stretching east from Gateway Boulevard to the edge of the city, and south from 92 Avenue to the Anthony Henday, Ward 11 is as sprawling as it is diverse.
With mature residential neighbourhoods, new suburban developments, large commercial centres and industrial areas all encompassed within the same southeast Edmonton boundaries, issues facing Ward 11 can serve as a microcosm for the city as a whole.
Infrastructure is expected to be a key issue in Ward 11 in this year’s election, as construc
  • Curtis Stock Golf Report: Good friend take part in northern tournaments

Two good friends from southern Alberta came north to take a pair of PGA of Alberta events in Edmonton.
Craig Gibson, who grew up in Brooks and now plays out of Calgary’s Sirocco golf course, eagled the first playoff hole at a Players Tour event at Glendale to edge out Royal Mayfair’s Mike Belbin after both players shot 4-under 68s.
Then, Dillon Batsel of Medicine Hat’s Connaught golf course won the two-day Professional Series at Blackhawk with rounds of 70-68.

  • Ward 10: Redevelopment, infill front of mind in south central Edmonton

Ward 10 is a study in southern Edmonton suburban growth, from houses built in Allendale and Parkallen after the Second World War to the booming new communities beyond Anthony Henday Drive.
The older neighbourhoods are dominated by leafy streets lined with single-family homes, but the 2016 city census shows more than half the ward’s dwellings are apartments and other types of multi-family housing.
The ward is bounded approximately by 72 Avenue, Calgary Trail-Highway 2, the city’s sout

  • Ward 9: A wide open race in Edmonton's southwest

Ward 9 can feel like its own peninsula – cut off from the rest of the city by the Whitemud Ravine and the North Saskatchewan River.
The ward sits in the deep southwest and it’s a ward to watch this year because six-term councillor Bryan Anderson declared he will not run again. Anderson was well known and respected from his time coaching football and basketball at Harry Ainlay and Strathcona high schools.
In the race to replace him, four candidates are already being asked if they seek
  • Ward 8: South of the river, mature neighbourhoods wrestle with growth

The University of Alberta, the Whyte Avenue strip, Old Strathcona and several older neighbourhoods form this riding which sprawls along the south side of the river valley from Hawrelak Park to the eastern boundary of the city.
Students, renters and middle-class homeowners make up a large part of the demographic, which has overwhelmingly supported left-leaning candidates in every recent election. As Premier Rachel Notley and MP Linda Duncan can attest, this has been solid NDP territory for
  • Ward 5: New councillor assured for west Edmonton with no incumbent

Ward 5 became one of the more interesting races in Edmonton’s 2017 civic election as soon as Coun. Michael Oshry announced in May he would not seek re-election after serving just one term.
Hemmed in by Parklands County on its western edge and the North Saskatchewan river valley to the east, housing and what to do about infill will be a key issue during this election. The ward is rapidly growing with new housing developments on its southern edge, continuing Edmonton’s urban sprawl.

  • Ward 7: What you need to know for this municipal election

There is no shortage of contenders wanting to topple three-term Ward 7 incumbent Tony Caterina in the 2017 Edmonton municipal elections.
There are six candidates who have announced their intentions to date.
Affordable housing, transit, policing and crime, and of course, in-fill development will all be issues candidates will focus on. But one of the biggest issues facing the ward is one of the city’s hot button issues: What is going to happen with Northlands?

  • 12 contenders seek to replace veteran councillor in Ward 4

If the early days are any indication, Ward 4 will be the most crowded race of Edmonton’s 2017 civic election.
At least a dozen people are running in the northeast Edmonton ward to replace veteran councillor Ed Gibbons, who is retiring after five terms on council. It is one of three undefended seats up for grabs during the Oct. 16 contest.

  • Ward 2: Three declared candidates to represent diverse slice of northwest Edmonton

Edmonton’s Ward 2 is a mishmash of industry and cultures, where you’re just as likely to find a church as you are a mosque, Buddhist temple or indoor go-kart track.
Home to Edmonton Islamic Academy, the Islamic Awareness Foundation, MAC Islamic school and Canada’s first mosque — Al-Rashid on 113A Street — Arabic is the language second most likely to be spoken at home after English, according to municipal census data.
The western border of Ward 2 is 156 Street,
  • Ward 1: Race for west Edmonton uncontested as nomination day approaches

From tony homes edging the river valley to sweeping industrial parks on the city’s western outskirts, Ward 1 is crisscrossed by some of Edmonton’s busiest traffic arterials.
Those roads divide mature residential neighbourhoods from commercial areas – including the sprawling West Edmonton Mall and surrounding shopping areas.
Incumbent Andrew Knack is seeking re-election for the Ward 1 council seat in a race that is so far uncontested.

    Allan Gilliland just can’t resist.
The renowned composer, who is also the dean of fine arts and communications at MacEwan University, is standing in a room filled with percussion instruments — snare drums, xylophones, timpani, tambourines, tubular bells. A collection of gongs, in different sizes, lines one wall. Grinning, Gilliland goes to the cupboard, takes out a good-sized mallet and hits the largest of the gongs, dead centre.

Chiarelli then got busy with a series of trades, sending the #s 16 and 33 picks to

For a race that covered 116 kilometres, it sure didn’t last very long.
After 115 kilometres of leg-draining chess, the third stage of the ATB Tour of Alberta began in earnest with less than one kilometre to go Sunday, and it was over quickly.
With several riders poised and ready for a sprint finish at the University of Alberta, Cannondale-Drapac’s Alex Howes pulled away from the pack with a dominating push that nobody had an answer for.
