  • Spoon dishes pleasingly funky moments at Winspear Wednesday night

Last night the city was divided between two bands.
OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration; most of Edmonton was either at the Guns N’ Roses extravaganza or hearing them echo from out of Commonwealth Stadium, while a fervent few in comparison packed the Winspear to see the first ever visit by Spoon. It took nine albums and close to a quarter of a century for the Austin-based five-piece to journey this far north, but the wait was definitely worth it.

A hearing to vary the conditions of Omar Khadr’s bail — including allowing the former Guantanamo Bay detainee to have unfettered contact with his controversial older sister — has been postponed.
A Court of Queen’s Bench hearing in Edmonton Thursday was adjourned at the request of the Crown, said Khadr’s lawyer, Nathan Whitling, in an email.
The bail variation application has been rescheduled to Sept. 15, Whitling said in a tweet.

  • Guns N' Roses plays long, hard and lewd at Commonwealth Stadium

Throughout their early days, Guns N’ Roses were scrappy and vicious, not the sorts of boys to hold back a harsh jab — and this can’t have helped but rubbed off on their fans a little.
So, cutting to the chase, there were two very direct questions looming over the impending Guns N’ Roses concert after a couple decades’ absence from Edmonton — could Axl Rose still sing, and what would he look like, exactly? Sort of a “shriek and Shrek” deal

  • Thursday's letters: Don't focus on skeletons in the closet

Re. “Everything is offensive, from Laurier to Dief,” NP, Aug. 29
Emily Carr offensive? Surely no one of her time did more to raise the profile of First Nations on the West Coast than did Emily Carr through her art. How can that be described as “cultural violence?”
Recent debates over significant Canadians in history have dug up a lot of skeletons. These people were products of their time. To judge people of 100 years ago by today’s standards is taking political corr
  • Opinion: Alberta no longer land of labour opportunity

Go west, young man. Not long ago that was sound advice for a young person struggling to find opportunities in Eastern and Central Canada. While it may still hold true for parts of Western Canada, it’s no longer the case for Alberta, once the pillar of western opportunity.
As Albertans celebrate Labour Day, now is a good time to take stock of the province’s labour market. A strong labour market is critical for the prosperity of workers. It matches workers looking for the right job opp
  • Houston floods overshadow debate at Edmonton's utility committee

Images of chest-deep water and Houston’s flooded freeways hung over Edmonton’s utility committee Wednesday as they struggled with how to protect this city from the storm of the century.
It’s a complex question of risk.
Should Edmonton lobby for the $4.7-billion it would need to prepare for the similar worst-case scenario officials believe climate change will make possible here?
Or — since Edmonton’s type of flash flooding is the kind that just hits one area really h
  • Edmonton graffiti writer's tags on murals irk arts advocate

Bob Schilf finds graffiti on the walls of Track ‘N Trail, his Whyte Avenue outdoors shop, almost weekly. But never on the mural.
The mural, of a glowing hand reaching through a void, covers the east wall of the building at 10148 82 Ave. It was painted by San Francisco street artist BIP as part of the 2016 Rust Magic Street Mural Festival.
Now, there’s a black rectangle painted over the thumb, covering a tag sprayed on the mural earlier this month.

  • Campaign signs already trigger complaints as unofficial start date looms

Election signs are a hot topic every election and Edmonton’s community standards peace offices are already getting complaints.
Candidates are posting signs in bus stops, on private fences that line major arterial roads and in vacant storefront windows. Phone surveys are picking up, too.
We spoke with city staff about the rules.
When can candidates start posting signs on public property?

  • Young stars led the way, but experienced supporting cast chipped in plenty for 2016-17 Edmonton Oilers

    Guest post by Nick Normandeau
Special to The Cult of Hockey
This summer I’ve read quite a few online articles about the experience level of the Edmonton Oilers, whether it’s about Steve Tambellini’s failure to surround the “Taylor Hall rebuild” players with solid veterans, or that starting this upcoming season with so many young players (Caggiula, Slepyshev, Puljujarvi, etc.) would be a mistake.  Well over the last five seasons, I’ve kept track of t
  • Shane Doan personified class on and off the ice

Only 13 guys have ever played more NHL games than Shane Doan’s 1,540, and sadly, none with the Edmonton Oilers.
The cries of “Doan, Doan, Doan,” from fans at Rexall Place at the 1995 NHL Draft forever ringing in the burning ears of the local team that decided centre Steve Kelly, now a cop, was a better pick at No. 6. The Winnipeg Jets went on to take him at No. 7.
That is our everlasting tie-in to the 40-year-old winger Doan, who called it quits Wednesday after 972 points

Mayor Don Iveson is bullish the city will eventually break even running the Edmonton Expo Centre, but even its longtime competitor — the Shaw Conference Centre — requires about $1.5 million in subsidies each year.
Council voted Tuesday to take control of the Expo Centre. It will take on a $47-million loan still owing from the centre’s expansion and give the centre to the Edmonton Economic Development Corp. (EEDC) to run instead of Northlands.

Edmonton politician Frank Oliver was a racist.

Slavs, he said, were “millstones” hung around the necks of real Canadians. The Chinese, he said, lived “like pigs,” while the Japanese, he wrote “are not our people, they do not belong to our civilization, they do not stren

With the final long weekend of the summer approaching, Jeff Kasbrick wants Alberta drivers to remember to slow down for people working at the roadside.
“It’s already the law to do so,” Kasbrick, a vice-president with the Alberta Motor Association, said Wednesday.
Since 2005, drivers have been required to slow down to 60 km/h and to move over to make room for stopped emergency vehicles, including tow trucks.

A decision to re-instate what many felt was a dangerous crossing on Jasper Avenue had frustrated pedestrians sounding off Wednesday.
City officials took the dedicated right-turn lane at 109 Street away because pedestrians said it felt unsafe; vehicles weren’t stopping for them. Then officials measured the traffic impact and found wait times tripled to an average 50 seconds from 16 seconds before the change.
