Wednesday's letters: Dieppe soldiers honoured in many ways
Re. “The Dieppe raid deserves a better commemoration,” Opinion, Aug. 19
I read with great interest Tyler Dawson’s opinion column about honouring the Canadian soldiers who participated in the appropriately described ill-fated Dieppe Raid in 1942.
Some better research on his part could have more fully explained the purpose of this raid. I recommend David O’Keefe’s One Day in August: The Untold Story Behind Canada’s Tragedy at Dieppe. This book refram -
Province to unveil first-quarter fiscal update
Albertans will find out Wednesday afternoon what shape the provincial coffers are in when Finance Minister Joe Ceci releases the 2017-18 first-quarter fiscal update.
The province racked up a $10.8-billion deficit by the end of the 2016-17 financial year, ending up $33.3 billion in the red.
Ceci’s plan at the time was to climb out of the debt hole little by little, producing incrementally smaller deficits each year and eventually balancing the budget by 2023.
It’s unlikely that plan h -
Opinion: Corporations must play a part in reconciliation
Since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) report was released two years ago, individuals and organizations from all sectors of society, from sports groups to universities, religious organizations to municipalities, have begun to engage in serious self-reflection about their role in reconciliation and implementing the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action.
But search investor and business agendas and reports and you will find little discussion of what Canadian companies are doing to advance re -
Opinion: Carbon tax a cautious step forward
Public discussion about Alberta’s carbon tax tends to raise two important subjects for discussion: the urgent need for action on climate change and the severe shortage of tax revenue in our province.
On both, the provincial government’s actions have been cautious and highlight the need for much more work to be done. However, the carbon levy as it is currently designed is an essential step in the right direction after decades of inaction on climate change.

Edmonton becoming a safer city in the eyes of Canadians: poll
Edmonton is climbing the ranks of Canada’s safest cities, jumping ahead in a poll that measured the public’s perception of safety for the second year in a row.
“It has actually worked out very well for Edmonton,” said David Valentin, executive vice-president of Mainstreet Research, the firm that surveyed more than 2,000 Canadians across the country. “It has to do with the kind of media we’re exposed to in the rest of Canada.”

Decision on appeal of Canadian Derby result could take months
Led by Kentucky invader Chief Know It All, the horses in Saturday’s Canadian Derby crossed the finish line shortly after 5:30 p.m., but it could take months before one of the closest and most dramatic finishes in the race’s history is actually official.

At The Cult of Hockey: The Edmonton Oilers are hoping long-term bet on Ostap Safin pays off
2017 Edmonton Oilers Prospects
No. 11: F Ostap Safin
Previously: n/a, drafted June 2017
The Edmonton Oilers created a hole at Right Wing when they traded Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders.
That transaction cleared valuable cap space. It brought back a right-handed center in Ryan Strome, a commodity which the Oilers organization is short on. But it also cleared room for the current crop of Oilers youngsters to come into their own, and eventually fill that void. The names you hav -
Jason Kenney accuses premier of attacking school choice
United Conservative Party leadership hopeful Jason Kenney has accused Premier Rachel Notley’s office of rubber-stamping a campaign against independent schools.
Speaking with supporters in a telephone town hall Tuesday night, Kenney said as leader he would “fight like heck” to defend school choice and parental authority in education.
He also accused the government of running a coalition of “NDP front groups” that are attacking independent school funding.
