  • Teenager missing after swimming in Smoky River

A 15-year-old boy remained missing Sunday after he was pulled away by an undercurrent on the Smoky River on Friday.
Spirit River RCMP were called at around 8:35 p.m. to the area about 10 km downstream from the Watino Bridge. Sgt. Jack Poitras, spokesman for the RCMP, said the boy is from the nearby Shady Lane Hutterite Colony.
The boy had been swimming with a group when he was caught in the undercurrent and pulled beneath the water, Poitras said.

  • Officials urge caution after woman swept away on river, rescued by boat

The weekend rescue of a woman who was swept away on the North Saskatchewan River highlights the need to exercise caution along the riverbank, says a city official.
“It’s a very swift river,” said Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokesperson Maya Filipovic on Monday. “It get dangerous for our crews as well to go out there and attempt these rescues.”
Police and fire crews were called to the river around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

  • K-Days attendance up over last year despite weather 'curve ball'

More than 816,000 people flocked to K-Days this year despite stormy weather that dampened initial attendance, say officials.
“Mother Nature may have thrown us a curve ball the first weekend, but she came through for us this past week,” said Northlands President and CEO Tim Reid in a Monday news release.
An estimated 13,000 more people attended the annual exhibition compared to 2016, he added.
Reid partly attributed the numbers to the inaugural K-Days Rodeo, which he said
  • Thirty years on, what does Black Friday mean to Edmonton?

The tornado that hit Edmonton on July 31, 1987, killed 27 people, injured hundreds and caused more than $500 million in damage in today’s dollars.
But 30 years later, does it still mean anything to Edmontonians?
Since the day that came to be known as Black Friday, the number of people who saw the destruction first-hand has dwindled as the city’s population has grown.

  • From not enough to too much: can you 'over warn' about a tornado?

Edmonton’s deadly 1987 tornado was a sea change for how severe weather is monitored in Canada.
The storm, which killed 27 people in Edmonton on the afternoon of July 31, 1987, led to investments in radar emergency warning systems aimed at reducing future death tolls.
But how much warning is too much?
“People want more warnings, but is there a possibility of actually over-warning people?” said Environment Canada meteorologist Dan Kulak. “It’s a real thing
  • Body rub parlours fear ID rules would boost underground sex trade

Requiring identification from clients at Edmonton’s body rub parlours would drive the industry out of business and force women into riskier situations in the underground sex trade, two parlour owners said.
In June, anti-sexual exploitation advocates said the city should require stricter ID and screening systems at the city’s 34 licensed body rub centres to help weed out problem clients.

  • Alberta agencies grapple with rise in sexual offences against children

The small girl cut through the crowd filling the Edmonton Law Courts foyer on a late July morning.
Instead of heading off to summer camp, to a lake, or the playground, the eight-year-old was going for lunch — a break after hours of waiting to testify at a trial of a 36-year-old man accused of sexually interfering with her when she was just five years old.
Despite the circumstances, the little girl smiled as she clutched the leash of a yellow Labrador retriever, one of three Zebra Chi

Dozens of family, friends and neighbours gathered to remember 14-year-old Krystyna Maksymova Sunday night, adding to a memorial and releasing paper lanterns.
