Neighbours on a quiet crescent in Malmo Plains are baffled by the size of a giant new house that’s replaced two single-storey bungalows.
“I call it the little Butterdome,” said neighbour Duncan Robertson, with a laugh.
The two-storey, 6,600 square-foot home is currently shrouded in bright yellow construction insulation and water proofing. Its three-storey elevator shaft for the rooftop patio can be seen from more than a block away.

Plaques honouring veterans stolen in Griesbach neighbourhood
More than a dozen metal plaques honouring Canada’s veterans and military history are missing from north Edmonton’s Griesbach neighbourhood in what residents are calling a “brazen and coordinated” robbery.
The 15 plaques — made out of a metal alloy — were pulled from their concrete bases sometime between July 23 and 24, members of the Griesbach Community League said in a statement.
“It’s very upsetting,” said community league president B -
Edmonton's latest homicide had history in drug trade: court records
Edmonton’s latest homicide victim as well as a man being sought as a person of interest in the case both have drug-related convictions, court records show.
Police responding to a weapons complaint found James Joel Dunham, 40, shot dead in a home near 101 Avenue and 153 Street around 5:20 a.m. Friday. The Edmonton medical examiner on Monday ruled the case a homicide, the city’s 31 of 2017.

United Conservative Party names house leadership team
Opposition MLAs in the new United Conservative Party caucus learned Tuesday who will join interim leader Nathan Cooper in the house leadership team.

Child pornography charges against a former civilian employee of the Edmonton Police Service have been withdrawn, but he is going to jail for making an arrangement to commit a sexual offence against a child.
Aaron Rothwell, 41, had charges of making, printing and publishing child pornography withdrawn Monday. The charges of distributing and selling child pornography were also withdrawn.
He was sentenced on a third charge of making an arrangement to commit a sexual offence against a child and give -
Police investigate after break-in at Mercer Tavern prompts fire call
Mercer Tavern is cleaning up after a break-in Tuesday morning that prompted a response from Edmonton fire crews.
Fire crews received a call from a person delivering fliers near the 10363 104 St. pub at 4:17 a.m. The caller reported the kitchen in the building “was very hot,” said Edmonton fire spokeswoman Maya Filipovic.
“By the time we arrived four minutes later, the sprinklers were already going and there were no active flames, so crews kind of did a sweep to make sure -
NewLeaf Travel name changed to Flair Airlines
Discount airline seat reseller NewLeaf Travel marked its first anniversary Tuesday by changing its name to Flair Airlines.
NewLeaf was bought June 7 by Kelowna, B.C.- based Flair Airlines, which had been supplying NewLeaf with aircraft and crews, in a move designed to bring airline operations and marketing under one roof.
Over the past year, Flair has flown 320,000 people and completed more than 2,600 flights across Canada, according to a news release.
Flair Airlines says it intends to expand it -
Hazelton coming into his own in dominating drive against Hamilton
It was a rope-a-dope of Muhammad Ali proportions.
Nobody hung back on the ropes letting the opponent think they were getting the upper hand better than the champ, only to pounce on a tired and overconfident target in the final round.
Floating like butterflies and stinging like bees might not have been in the Edmonton Eskimos game plan going into Hamilton last week, but that’s the way things worked out for Vidal Hazelton.
After being relatively quiet on the stats sheet all night, the third- -
Tuesday's letters: Teach kids to respect public art
I was driving west over the Quesnell Bridge on Sunday afternoon and glanced over to admire my favourite piece of public art, the Talus Dome.
I witnessed two small children climbing over the shiny spheres while being “supervised” by a couple who I assumed were their parents. They all had bike helmets on and looked as if they had cycled there as a family.
My reaction was immediate and reminiscent to seeing Michelangelo’s Pieta protected by acrylic shields in 1974 after a vandal h -
'Powerful tax tool': New regulations let cities act on derelict land
New provincial regulations released Monday would allow Edmonton to impose higher taxes on speculators and other commercial property owners who leave land sitting vacant.
That’s a win for Edmonton officials, who have been lobbying for the change. It’s a move that would create what one city lawyer previously called “one of the most powerful tax tools that exist” in the fight to clean up derelict properties.
The new set of regulations also includes a provision that -
'Please don't interrupt': Judge chastises man accused of slew of sexual offences
After making multiple attempts to postpone his trial, and just moments before the first witness was to be called, a man facing 11 sexual offence charges related to children decided to enter several guilty pleas.
A trial for Timothy Michael Lidkea had been scheduled to begin Monday morning, but after delays resulting from both confusion about support staff, and attempts by the accused to get the matter postponed, provincial court Judge Marilena Carminati ordered that the trial proceed. -
Editorial: The end of an era
The birth of the nascent United Conservative Party on the weekend has overshadowed the deaths of the two parties it now succeeds.
The extraordinary and historic demise of not one, but two, provincial political institutions deserves its own moment of reflection and remembrance. While the two small-c conservative houses died on the exact same weekend, the obituaries of the Progressive Conservative and Wildrose parties can be summed up with remarkably dissimilar themes.
The PCs are the empire that -
Jack of all trades, master of one — Edmonton Oilers' Mark Letestu really crushed it on the powerplay
2016-17 Edmonton Oilers in reviewMark Letestu
The calendar was just turning to December and Edmonton Oilers’ coach Todd McLellan badly needed a bandaid for his bleeding powerplay. The struggling special teams group was coming off a desultory 0-for-9 output during a brief, brutal two-game homestand that had seen the Oilers drop regulation decisions to first Arizona, then Toronto. There was a bad taste in the mouth of pretty much everyone associated with or following the team, which had drop -
City launches internal investigation after 14-year-old girl drowns
The City of Edmonton will be conducting an internal review of safety around its storm water management facilities following the drowning death of a 14-year-old girl who tried to rescue the dog she was walking from a pond Saturday.
Meanwhile, the president of the Lago Lindo community league is raising questions over the signage of the ponds.
Krystyna Maksymova, 14, was walking a neighbour’s dog with her younger sister when the animal chased after some geese in the pond near 82 Street and Ch -

Paula Simons: Don't shrug off Edmonton's homicide rate
The good news? Edmonton isn’t actually the murder capital of Canada.
In its new report on crime severity in Canada, Statistics Canada awards that dubious distinction to Thunder Bay, Ont.
In 2016, says StatsCan, Thunder Bay had more homicides per capita than any other Canadian city.
Metro Edmonton came second.
According to StatsCan, the greater Edmonton metropolitan area recorded 47 homicides last year. That gave us a rate of 3.39 killings per 100,000 residents. The Thunder Bay region -
MLA rejects UCP membership as birthing pains of new party continue
And then there was one …
In what was the worst kept secret of Alberta politics, Brian Jean announced Monday afternoon he was stepping down as Wildrose leader to officially kick off his campaign for leader of the new United Conservative Party.
“We will repeal, undo and replace much of the damage the NDP has done,” Jean said in an advance copy of his prepared speech that mentioned the NDP eight times and the UCP just once.
Jean is the first (former) party leader in the race.

Unprepared rafters rescued from Abraham Lake
An evening on the lake took a dangerous turn Sunday, requiring two people and a dog be rescued from a severe storm after their rubber dinghy was blown from shore on Abraham Lake near Nordegg, Alta.
A 33-year-old man from Smokey Lake and a 22-year-old woman from Willingdon were found by an Alberta Fish and Wildlife officer and two firefighters in a near-hypothermic state, according to an RCMP media release. The two were found huddled together under their rubber boat along shore trying to stay war -
BioWare stalks gamers with Anthem design at Edmonton Corn Maze
An Edmonton game development company is going back to the land to promote its latest outer-space adventure.
BioWare has sponsored the Edmonton Corn Maze in Spruce Grove to cut a design into the field from Anthem, a role-playing video game the firm plans to release around Christmas 2018.
“We wanted to partner with the corn maze folks for a while … We thought it would be a good idea to have an Anthem-themed corn maze this year,” BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn said Monday.

Jones: Edmonton Eskimos ensure K-Days event is still magic for the kids
Still magic.
The wind whistled. The rain drove down. And the temperature felt more like January than July.
The temperature was 10.2 C at 9 a.m. when it began on a day with the lowest maximum temperature for a July 24 in recorded history a chilly 12.3 C.
It was the 40th edition of Monday Morning Magic for special needs kids between the ages of three and 12, the first few of which were held in secrecy without publicity by

Alberta latest province to cover the cost of abortion pill Mifegymiso
Alberta has become the latest province to cover the cost of a medical abortion pill.
Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said Mifegymiso is now available for any woman in the province who requests it.

She said it will help women who live in rural areas who have had to travel to urban centres for surgical abortions.

Fuhr ready for Edmonton's PGA Tour Canada stop
Grant Fuhr still loves the thrill of the game, even if he had to change the game.
His puck-stopping days are long behind him, but the 54-year-old still finds a way to get the competitive juices flowing as often as possible.
