Admiral Nick Danger here, filing to you at The Edmonton Journal, from Her Majesty’s Canadian Raft CASA taking part in the 58th annual sourdough raft race.
We have just set off on the North Saskatchewan River from Terwilligar Park with 14 other craft for about a three-and-a-half hour cruise down to Rafters’ Landing.
“I have lain awake for 20 years dreaming of building your raft,” says Roger Kehoe, who has been involved in the raft race for a couple of decades. “I bel

Camrose man drowns at nature reserve pond
An underwater dive team recovered the body of a 25-year-old Camrose man Sunday morning after he drowned at a local nature reserve pond.
The man was with friends at the Camrose County Nature Reserve Pond, located about 30km southeast of the city on Saturday afternoon.
He was last seen in the water at 8 p.m., RCMP spokesperson Laurel Scott said.
A multiagency search and rescue effort Saturday night failed to locate the man but they managed to find and recover his body at about 10 -
Edmonton cocktail creators set to compete for regional crown
The city’s top barchefs will be competing for the regional crown in Edmonton’s first Made With Love craft cocktail competition Monday night.
Made With Love is an annual international competition with barchefs presenting original cocktail creations paired with a food dish and judged by industry professionals as well as the public who purchase tickets to the event.
The fourteen barchefs competing from Edmonton restaurants will be judged on their cocktail’s originality, creativity -
Curtis Stock: Plenty of quality holes at public courses
Two weeks ago I listed the Top 10 private course golf holes as voted on by 35 of Edmonton’s golf professionals and executives and there was some clear consensus.
But with the exception of RedTail Landing’s 11th hole, the voting for the Top 10 public courses was all over the place.
In large part that’s because there are ‘only’ nine private courses as opposed to some 70 public courses within an hour’s drive of Edmonton.
But an equal factor seems to be there are -
Five things we learned: Eskimos 31, Tiger-Cats 28
The Edmonton Eskimos are 4-0 for the first time since the 2014 season, maintaining their spot atop the Canadian Football League standings they’ve held since opening week. It was another hard-fought, physical game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats that went down to the wire in front of a sold-out crowd at Tim Horton’s Field on Thursday, where the Eskimos trailed the entire time before putting together a five-play, 75-yard drive in the final 70 seconds to come back from a 12-point fourth -
Alberta barrel racer carrying on family legacy at K-Days Rodeo
There may not be a more famous rodeo family in Alberta than the Daines family.
Every time Sydney Daines races out on to the arena grounds on her horse named Flame and flies around three barrels in a clover leaf pattern, she’s carrying on her family’s legacy.
But the 21-year-old isn’t just making a big name for herself in the rodeo sport that women rule. She’s also proving to be ruling the soccer pitch too as she wrapped up her rookie season with the Alberta Pandas that sa -
OK Google, it's time to change Edmonton's display picture!
If a picture says a thousand words, those who perform a Google search for “Edmonton” are saying a lot of ugly things about our city.
The image Google displays prominently at the top of their Edmonton search results page features two aging industrial buildings perched along the shore of what appears to be a small swamp. A dull skyline vaguely peeks out behind 10 smokestacks perched atop the two featured buildings.  -
Sensible tops scare tactics when making good food choices
We’ve been fielding many questions lately about the What the Health documentary currently running on Netflix.
If you haven’t seen the movie, its based on the premise that big industry (U.S. meat and dairy) has buddied up with government and non-profits, much like the tobacco industry did years ago. The documentary suggests agencies trusted with keeping us healthy have compromised their mandate in exchange for lucrative funding.
There are no shortage of documentaries out there questio -
Province 'reining in' $400,000 in overspending on sports scholarships
Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference administrators want a meeting with government to discuss funding alternatives after they were told the province would be “reining in” a $400,000 overspend on sports scholarships.
The Jimmie Condon Athletic Scholarship, named in honour of Alberta Sports Hall of Fame member and Calgarian philanthropist, recognizes athletic performance at universities, colleges and technical institutes in Alberta with up to $1,800 in funding.

Thomson: With new party conservatives take scalpel to Alberta politics
Alberta politics got a facelift Saturday night.
Not just a nip and tuck but a full-on reconstruction.
Never again will you see the prominent mug of the old Progressive Conservative party or the familiar scowl of the Wildrose.
They have been transformed into one new face — the United Conservative Party — thanks to scalpel wielding members of both parties.Wildrosers voted 95 per cent — as did PC members — to scrap their old parties to form the new.

A young girl has been transported to an Edmonton hospital after being rescued from a man-made lake at one of the city’s new housing developments in north Edmonton.
Fire services received a call at 1:54pm for a water rescue opposite a vacant block of land on 78 Street in the Crystallina Nera neighbourhood.
Two fire trucks arrived at 2 p.m. and deployed their rapid deployment craft.
They found the victim four minutes later.

United Conservative Party: The next steps
After declaring a resounding, 95-per-cent “yes” to unity Saturday, Alberta’s Wildrose and Progressive Conservative parties are well and truly on the path to creating a single conservative political force.
But there is a vast expanse of legislative, political and financial territory to navigate before the United Conservative Party morphs from a nine-page agreement in principle to a live and kicking entity ready to take on the NDP in the 2019 election.

Wildrose, Progressive Conservative parties to merge with 95% approval
The Wildrose and Progressive Conservatives have voted to unify under a single conservative banner in an historic vote Saturday.
Just over ninety-five per cent of both Wildrose members voted yes for unity, well above the 75 per cent majority it needed to give the merger a go-ahead for Wildrose and the half needed by PCs.
The last few months have seen Wildrose Leader Brian Jean criss-cross the province in a bid to secure the yes vote, holding myriad meetings and town halls and answering questions -

Did Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli make the most of Connor McDavid's ELC in 2016-17?
Rating Peter Chiarelli, Part 2
One year after #FireChiarelli was huge on Twitter, do any of the arguments hold up against Oilers GM?
In the first post in this series of three rating the work of Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli, I looked at how Chiarelli’s work has compared to other GMs of the Katz era, Kevin Lowe, Steve Tambellini and Craig MacTavish. These three GMs collectively turned the Oilers into the worst franchise in the NHL, so that’s not a high bar for Chiarelli to cross.

FC Edmonton coach impressed with play of Canadian national team
Like many Canadian soccer fans, FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller was impressed with the performance of the men’s national team at the Gold Cup.
Canada were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the continental tournament Thursday, losing 2-1 to Jamaica in a game they dominated.
Canada had 64 per cent of the possession, took 19 shots to Jamaica’s eight, and forced a number of excellent saves out of Reggae Boyz goalkeeper Andre Blake.
