With the signings of veteran LW Jussi Jokinen and experienced international defenceman Yohann Auvitu in recent days, the fine-tuning of the Edmonton Oilers roster for 2017-18 is nearly complete. Auvitu became the 50th man to sign an NHL contract with the club, theoretically the limit although with two of those contracts in place for under-aged juniors — LW Tyler Benson and G Dylan Wells — the effective number is 48.
That leaves a little slush room for maybe one more late signing, or

Edmonton Police Commission supports review of police street checks
The Edmonton Police Commission is supporting a third-party review of police street checks.
The review is supposed to determine whether current street check practices — where officers stop and question persons not suspected of a crime — are “respectful” of all people served by the Edmonton Police Service while comparing Edmonton police practices to those used across Canada and other Commonwealth nations.
The commission will also review all data gathered since a new street -

The City of Edmonton pleaded not guilty Wednesday to several charges laid by Occupational Health and Safety in connection to the death of a worker who was buried by the spilling contents of a dump truck.
Stephen Penny, 35, died in hospital days after he was buried by street sweepings in a city roadway maintenance yard at 13003 56 St. on April 22, 2015. At the time, police said a pin in the tailgate got stuck, and Penny, who was driving the truck, went to check on it. That’s when the s -
Counting Crows never stopped moving and making beautiful music
One of the most bittersweet bands to emerge from the so-called “alt” era of the ’90s, Counting Crows is currently touring the continent with Matchbox 20 — the latter, jangly rockers celebrating 20-plus years since their inception. The two acts play Rogers Place on Friday night, Crows opening.
Now if your single entry point to Counting Crows is 1993’s once-ubiquitous song Mr. Jones, this does not rile thoughtful singer Adam Duritz — he is content with the fact -

A man charged with promoting hatred against public figures, women and numerous marginalized groups on his blogs has died.
Barry Winters, 62, was charged with wilful promotion of hatred in June. He died July 4 after suffering a stroke, a complainant in the case said.

Tisbury Crossing offers luxury rentals in Sherwood Park
Kenneth Varley is living the dream. Retired after 37 years of working in the oil industry, he and his wife are now able to travel to warmer destinations in the winter and enjoy their recreational property in the summer.
They’ve also recently downsized to an apartment at Tisbury Crossing, a move Varley said has been one of the best they’ve ever made.Previously, the couple lived in a 3,000-square-foot home with a triple garage. It was great place to raise a family but, as any homeowner -
Construction of $25 million Aga Khan garden reaches halfway point
Construction of the multimillion dollar Islamic garden at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden has reached the halfway point.
Announced in late April, funding for the 12 acre Mughal Garden came courtesy of a $25-million donation from the Aga Khan, the hereditary Imam or spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.
Early stages of construction began in the summer of 2016 and the new garden is scheduled to open in time for the Aga Khan’s diamond jubilee celebrations in July 20 -
Edmonton Eskimos eager for rematch with Ottawa Redblacks
Beating the Ottawa Redblacks won’t change what happened in last year’s Canadian Football League East Division final.
It won’t erase Edmonton’s upset loss.
It won’t give the Eskimos a second chance to play in the Grey Cup game.
There are no mulligans in football. Beating the Redblacks wouldn’t have impact on what happened last season, but it would feel great.
Even Esks head coach Jason Maas admitted as much when asked about added motivation heading into Friday& -
Local designers say luxury watches shouldn't cost a fortune
Andriy Marchyshyn and Rudy Alami lead double lives.
By day, they are working as IT analysts for the University of Alberta; by night, they are busy building a luxury watch brand.
Marchyshyn, 27, and Alami, 24, launched their first company, MAD Watches, this week.
The startup uses the same premise behind disruptive, e-commerce companies like Warby Parker: beat the big brands’ prices by cutting out the middleman and selling directly to consumers online.

Government "sunshine" list is partly cloudy
Alberta’s sunshine lists look straightforward — they outline the names of top earning employees, their role, their salary and the cost of any extra benefits they’ve earned.
Although more transparency about top-paid public servants and the CEOs of public agencies was a key NDP government promise, the public has to scrounge around the online tools to find a complete picture of executive and bureaucrat pay.
“I am frustrated by the amount of investigative work one has to do t -
Committee mulls Edmonton monument to memorialize residential school victims
City officials are planning to commemorate residential school survivors and those who died with an artistic monument in Edmonton.
“It’s not as simple as using the traditional public art call,” Mike Chow, director of Indigenous relations for the city, said last week. “What we’ve learned from our work around reconciliation is you have to take the time to build the relationship before you do any said action.”

TSN’s Craig Button made a strong case for the Edmonton Oilers to go with and stick with Jesse Puljujarvi in their Top 9 next year. Button told Jason Gregor on TSN 1260 that Puljujarvi is a better bet than either Anton Slepyshev or Drake Caggiula.

Shanty towns and meatpacking: Dig to reveal Mill Creek ravine's hidden past
A team of researchers is hoping unearthed remnants from a meatpacking plant in Mill Creek ravine will give them a better understanding of what life was like for workers in early 20th-century Edmonton.
Last year, Haeden Stewart, a PhD candidate from the University of Chicago, spent the summer excavating and analyzing artifacts from a shanty town that sprang up at Ross Acreage in the early 1900s to understand what home life was like for the impoverished, working-class families living in about 50 d -

New rules will keep wheelchairs out of garage suites, say advocates
Community advocates say new Edmonton garage suite restrictions will make it impossible to build them with room for wheelchairs.
“It just doesn’t make sense,” said Kim Ziola, an architect with multiple sclerosis who would like to build a unit for himself and his wife on his daughter’s 33-foot (10-metre) wide lot in King Edward Park. He’ll need a wheelchair eventually.
He thinks Edmonton’s new 50-square-metre, second-floor restriction on these units could -

Edmonton city council is taking two steps forward on photo radar, one step back on mass transit.
On the plus side, we have Coun. Dave Loken, one of the city’s most ardent defenders of photo radar, speaking good sense on the matter — more than any councillor has done before.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, Loken announced: “Photo radar locations will now be posted. So you folks out there who have been letting us know how you feel about photo radar, you will now know wh -
Late night predatory attacks on hawk nestlings discovered by U of A researchers
Predatory attacks by raccoons and owls on nestlings of North America’s largest hawk could be a factor in the declining population of the threatened species, video evidence from a University of Alberta study suggests.

The study, conducted through the university’s biology -

The list of more than 100 locations is posted at edmonton.ca/photoradar and will be
