Rocky Mountain House — With a little more than two weeks until the unite-the-right vote, here’s the question that’s keeping officials of the Wildrose and Progressive Conservatives awake at night.
What happens if a clear majority of the two parties vote for a merger on July 22 but the deal still manages to fail because it gets less than the 75 per cent approval needed from Wildrose members?
That would be a nightmare scenario for officials who are desperate to get a merger a

Connor McDavid signs major hometown discount deal with Edmonton Oilers
Connor McDavid has signed a major hometown discount contract with the Edmonton Oilers, eight years at $12.5 million per.
McDavid was rumoured to be signing an eight-year deal at $13.25 million per, but he took less than that. Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli said that McDavid could have signed for much more, or pushed for a shorter term, but chose not to do so.
“Connor was emphatic, as was I, about keeping this team competitive,” Chiarelli said.
“He wants us to ice a winning team, as -
Council mulls possible public dial-a-ride transit system
Edmonton’s city council seemed keen to explore new dial-a-ride options for public transit Wednesday morning, which could be like a publicly-run version of Uber car-pool.
RideCo., a Waterloo-based technology company, presented its mobile phone-based app system which has already used taxis and vans to schedule trips and offer door-to-door service through pilot projects in other cities.
A one-year pilot in Milton, Ont., moved more people for less cost to the public when compared to the -
Oilers debut new white jersey at McDavid signing
The Edmonton Oilers have unveiled the National Hockey league team’s new white jersey, two weeks after the orange home version debuted in Las Vegas a day before the NHL Awards.
Connor McDavid donned the road jersey shortly after signing an eight-year contract extension worth $100-million over eight seasons. Adidas has assumed the manufacture of all 31 NHL teams’ on-ice uniforms for the 2017-18 season.
The new white jersey is very much like the previous Reebok version, using dark blue -

A second person has died after a Monday crash between a car and a stolen truck that had been the subject of a police chase, Alberta’s police watchdog confirmed Wednesday.
In a news release confirming its investigation, Alberta Serious Incident Response Teams said that the woman who had initially survived a crash that killed a male passenger has since died.
The pursuit began when officers were called to a report of a stolen truck at 170 Street and 87 Avenue just before 8 p.m. Monday, -

Live: Transit riders question new strategy for high-frequency network
Many disabled transit riders simply can’t manage a longer walk to the bus stop, said the first of 18 speakers registered to speak to Edmonton’s new transit strategy Wednesday.
The new strategy would reorganize the transit system, creating more direct routes for both community buses and main routes.
It would not cut back on service and is not about “the Uberization” of transit, said planning branch manager Peter Ohm, introducing the subject.

Queen + Adam Lambert hit all the right notes at Rogers Place
It’s impossible to believe that Adam Lambert would kill a man.
Other than that, the American Idol runner-up was perfectly acceptable as a Freddie Mercury replacement at Tuesday night’s Queen + Adam Lambert performance. The now five-year-old project has provoked grumbles in some quarters as hardcore fans denounce Lambert’s association with original members Brian May and Roger Taylor, but the fact is everyone involved seems energized by the collaboration. Most importantly, the au -
University of Alberta professors urge administration to address pay inequity
The organization that represents academics at the University of Alberta is calling on the school’s administration to take action on pay inequities affecting professors who are women, visible minorities or indigenous.
A new study released by the group analyzed publicly available compensation data, finding professors in those categories are being paid substantially less on average compared to their male counterparts.
“The takeaway is there are significant inequities here that have to b -
Jason Gregor: Edmonton Oilers' strategy of patience, abstinence from free-agency frenzy will be judged later in upcoming season
Edmonton Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli has been much quieter on the National Hockey League free-agency front this off-season than he was in 2015, signing Andrej Sekera and Mark Letestu, or last summer, when he signed Milan Lucic, Drake Caggiula, Matthew Benning and Kris Russell.
The Oilers, though, finished higher in the standings than expected in the standings this past season. I didn’t see any predictions in September that had them finishing with 100-plus points and winning a pl -
"Who ARE those guys?!" and other key questions about Edmonton Oilers' UFA Class of '17
Well that was different, wasn’t it?
After two straight summers in which they signed the longest, richest individual pact anywhere in the NHL, the Edmonton Oilers made no such splash in 2017, just a few little ripples. Unless you count the wave of discomfiture that swamped certain backwaters of the fan base (yes that was a joke) about the lack of an impact signing.
When the dust settled on the buyout of Benoit Pouliot, the loss of Griffin Reinhart to expansion, and the departures of Group V -

The height of luxury: Allure condos dazzle at VIP grand opening
The “Art Of Living” has come to life in the ultra exclusive southwest neighbourhood of Uplands of Mactaggart in the form of a condominium complex never before seen in our fair River City. And I was lucky enough to be on hand for the VIP launch of this latest Carrington Community. I pulled up to the stunning Allure building, and before I even walked through the gleaming glass doorway, I already felt the height of luxury that was in store.
As I entered the Allure foyer—which has -
The Cult of Hockey: Lets All Get "Real" On Leon Draisaitl
The recent dust-up on Twitter and on the chat sites over the Leon Draisaitl contract situation with the Edmonton Oilers seems like the perfect excuse to pull out one of my all-time favorite quotations, by British actress Pam Ferris. It goes something like this:
“The older I get, the less I know”.
The essence of that quote is a healthy distrust of those who should know nothing about a subject but who apparently (if we are to believe what they tell us) know everything. They just -
Push for low-income housing in every neighbourhood gets Edmonton council OK
City councillors endorsed a new target to push low-income housing into every neighbourhood in Edmonton, setting the stage Tuesday for very different new building agenda.

Edmonton Oilers prospect Caleb Jones keeps his nose out of it at development camp
JASPER, Alta. — Caleb Jones always had a nose for hockey.
Now he has a nose FROM hockey.
But they’re hoping recent surgery will fix that.
In the meantime, the highly touted defenceman is taking it pretty easy at Edmonton Oilers development camp this week, taking care to not mess up the repair work.
“I just had the surgery done three weeks ago, so I’m just sort of taking it light, shooting on the goalies, getting some reps in there, but nothing too intense,” said Jon -
Tax changes, showing 'some gonads' against feds, focus for United Liberty
If Derek Fildebrandt gets his way, a new united conservative party would eliminate Alberta’s carbon and small business taxes, and bring back a 10 per cent flat tax rate.
Fildebrandt, the Wildrose MLA for Strathmore-Brooks, unveiled a suite of tax proposals under the United Liberty banner Tuesday, saying he wants to talk about policy — not partisan politics — ahead of the July 22 unity vote.
“We’re here to try and kickstart the ideas,” Fildebrandt said in -

Mounties were investigating after a rabbit was reportedly killed and its blood smeared on a St. Albert school Tuesday.

“Harming wildlife and damaging a school are disturbing and serious matters to the RCMP and the community of St. Albe -
26 young people receiving intervention services died in one-year period, new Alberta report says
The manner in which 14 children and youths died while receiving government intervention remains undetermined, according to a recent provincial report.
In its 2016-17 annual report, the Children’s Services department reported 26 young people died while receiving services. Eight of those were in care while 16 were not in care, but were receiving services. Two of the youths were over 18, but were still receiving support.
