Clothing, furniture and household items are needed to help residents of a Terrace Heights apartment rebuild their lives after a fire destroyed their home.
The two-storey apartment building at 73 Street and 101 Avenue was reduced to rubble Monday morning in a fire that started in a lower unit.
Theresa Baran, one of the residents at the scene, said she fled the building after smelling smoke, leaving behind all her belongings but her pets. Residents reported hearing a small exp

Behar naked? Twitter bet goes viral on Eskimos rookie receiver
Forget about facing cornerbacks. This time, Nate Behar has backed himself into a corner.
The Edmonton Eskimos rookie receiver had to put his money where his mouth was ahead of Friday’s season-opener after taking to social media to cheer on fellow Carleton product Tunde Adeleke.
“If Tunde cribs one tonight I will go streaking through the streets of Edmonton holding up a cutout of his head,” Behar posted on Twitter Thursday, before Adeleke came up with a 71-yard punt return touch -
Jurassic Park has 'inspired' scientists to hunt for dinosaur DNA, says Philip Currie
Dinosaurs roaming around amusement parks is still entirely a silver screen phenomenon, but renowned palaeontologist Philip Currie has a bone to pick with those who dismiss the possibility of a real-life Jurassic Park.
“We’re in a new golden age of science where we know so much more than just four years ago due to new discoveries and technology,” Currie told a packed theatre at the Royal Alberta Museum on Wednesday. “Jurassic Park has inspired us to look for soft tissue, a -
Justin Trudeau names Albertans Jen Sidey and Josh Kutryk Canada's newest astronauts
Ottawa — Two Albertans were named Canada’s newest astronauts Saturday as the country marked its 150th birthday.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used the platform of waterlogged Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa to name Jennifer Sidey of Calgary and Joshua Kutryk of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.
Sidey is a lecturer with the University of Cambridge who has worked as a mechanical engineer, while Kutryk is an air force pilot who also holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and -
Edmonton Oilers sign depth forward Ty Rattie to one-year "show me" deal
No big splashes for Edmonton Oilers this year, nothing like the eight-figure contracts the club has signed on each of the past four Canada Days in the opening minutes of free agency each time.
One small signing to this point, of scoring forward Ty Rattie, to a one-year, two-way contract that would pay him $700,000 in the NHL and $275,000 in the AHL. It’s the latter league where Rattie has done most of his scoring since turning pro out of the fabled Portland Winterhawks program in 2013, whe -
Van's got the juice to carry Eskimos through White injury
Travon Van? More like Travon Bulldozer.
That’s what it looked like, at least, when the Edmonton Eskimos running back trucked through not one, but two Montreal Alouettes receivers on the way to his first touchdown in green and gold Friday.
Van geared up for an 11-yard run into the end zone, leaving Alouettes safety Chris Ackie and linebacker Branden Dozier laying on the goal-line.
It closed the gap coming out of the locker-room after trailing the entire first half, and would have tied it up -

If the surname was Smith or Johnson, it would be much easier to leave it at home.

Saturday's letters: Send off Semenko in fitting fashionÂ
When a legend like the great Dave Semenko falls, it behooves the Edmonton Oilers to stand down from all salary negotiations with current players such as Connor McDavid and pause to honour this rather stellar hockey enforcer.
I was behind the penalty bench after he fought a Flames player and got five for fighting, a 10-minute misconduct and then tossed for a game misconduct. He was mean and yet so nice, the perfect security detail on the ice.
Why not set up a funeral for Semenko at Rogers Place a -
Opinion: Without new resources, expect more injustice in Alberta's court system
Re. “No one gets justice when courts don’t work right,” Paula Simons, June 27
I read Paula Simon’s Tuesday column with an incredible sense of frustration. I spent 27 years as a prosecutor in this province, including the last 10 running the Specialized Prosecutions Branch of the Alberta Prosecution Service.
I can say unequivocally that the state of the criminal justice system in Alberta is deplorable. We are seeing serious cases lost because of under-resourcing and other c -

Terry Jones: Eskimos win ugly against Alouettes
With 31,828 fans in the stands and a pair of CF18 jets performing a flyby at the end of the national anthem on the eve of Canada’s 150th birthday, it took forever for the Edmonton Eskimos to get with the program.
While the fans were there to start their Canada Day long weekend celebrating the league which supplied so many typically exciting and entertaining games to start the season, it was like the Eskimos had elected to start their bye week early.
It was ugly.

Eskimos hold off Alouettes for second-consecutive win
Happy Canada Day, indeed.
Though the Edmonton Eskimos weren’t always sure that would be the feeling when they woke up, after coming up with an anything-but-pretty home-opening effort against the Montreal Alouettes (1-1) Friday.
Still, the result is all that counts in the standings, as the Eskimos (2-0) came back to win 23-19 in front of 31,828 at Commonwealth Stadium.

This from TSN’s Ryan Rishaug:That’s a painful one. The Oilers invested a second-round pick (#31 ov -

Indigenous groups across Alberta are grappling with how to celebrate Canada Day, citing concerns that festivities ignore historical injustices and fail to acknowledge cultural genocide over the past 150 years.
“Some people do see it as a slap in the face or a reminder of the fact we didn’t really matter,” said Natascha Okimaw, cultural navigator at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, on Thursday. “For an indigenous person, it’s the celebration -

Cold nights and long summer days are ideal conditions to ripen grapes while allowing them to retain the acidity required to create quality sparkling wine. Nova Scotia has the added feature of cool ocean breezes, which are ideal to moderate the temperature.
