For the three years of its construction, MacEwan University’s newest building to house students from the faculty of fine arts and communications was given a placeholder moniker of the Centre for Arts and Culture.
But now the $180-million structure on the corner of 104 Avenue and 110 Street has a real name.
Outgoing university president David Atkinson announced Wednesday the building will be named Allard Hall in recognition of the Allard family’s more than 30 years of support of

Receiver Duke Williams comes up big in debut with Eskimos
Not all diamonds have to come from the rough.
And Duke Williams might just be rewriting the book on breaking onto the Edmonton Eskimos offence.
Not only did he become the first American receiver to start in a season opener for the club since 2011.
But if Williams becomes the next big thing to come out of an Eskimos factory that has produced elite receivers the likes of Derel Walker and Brandon Zylstra, the rookie will have broken a trend that tends to drive fans crazy when looking in hindsight. -
Covenant Health: Over 1,300 patients urged to get tested for hepatitis
Alberta’s Catholic healthcare organization is warning patients about a potential risk of exposure to hepatitis.
The health provider will be mailing letters to 1,307 patients who may have been exposed to hepatitis B and C, said Dr. Owen Heisler, Chief Medical Officer for Covenant Health, at a Wednesday morning press conference at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital in south Edmonton.
Potential exposures occurred between 2013 and 2016 at Grey Nuns and between 2014 and 2016 at M -
What does Connor McDavid at 8 years, $106 million mean for Edmonton Oilers?
McDavid’s long term represents a major success for Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli in turning around the franchise
Yesterday Oilers insider Ryan Rishaug of TSN tweeted, “McDavid, Draisaitl contract watch continues. I’d guess 97 to be in 13m range on an 8 year deal. We’ll see.”
Today, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet tweeted: “Further to @TSNRyanRishaug McDavid mention, hearing deal will be around $13.25 for 8 years. Big win for EDM to get that term, as opp -

Terry Jones: Sweeping changes to Brier, Scotties formats will make them more enjoyable
Nunavut will play seven round-robin games in the new Scotties and Brier format rolled out Tuesday by Curling Canada. And there will be no camouflaging that.
But a creative twist will be introduced that will definitely add interest and appeal while the association proceeds with the politically correct decision to include Nunavut, Yukon and the Northwest Territories as fully accredited ‘provinces’ in the two showcase events.
Instead of the relegation system in which four teams competed -
UFC 215 in Edmonton to feature Ngannou, Dos Santos heavyweight clash
The big guys are coming to Edmonton.
With UFC 215 set for Sept. 9 at Rogers Place, the company confirmed two massive fights on Wednesday morning.
The big one — and this will have the MMA world talking — will feature rising star Francis Ngannou challenging former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos.
Ngannou is arguably the hottest rising commodity in the entire UFC and is ranked No. 5 in the official rankings at heavyweight. The Cameroonian has finished all five of his fights s -
Will this be the tower council turns down? Developer pitches 28 storeys on two single lots
Council is expected to debate on Wednesday afternoon the merits of a developer building a 28-storey tower on just two single-family lots in the Grandin area of Oliver, a tower the city’s planners oppose.
But if councillors vote no, it would be a first for the current city council.
According to city records, the last time any Edmonton council opposed a new tower in Edmonton was 2009, when council turned down a 34-storey pitch for Bellamy Hill downtown.
Edmonton’s planners say the Gran -

Tim Hague: 'I’m just in love with the sport. If it kills me, whatever, I’m ready'
There are no end of valid questions and controversies about fighter Tim Hague’s death, but a few things are also clear: Hague himself not only gloried in the ferocity and manliness of his sport, he accepted he might die in the ring.
Two months before his June 16 fight with Adam Braidwood ended his life, Hague engaged in a war of words with online critics who questioned him relentlessly about him still fighting at age 34, with a history of concussions.

Wednesday's letters: Authorities must ensure right to safety from hate
Re. “Why won’t politicians speak out against hate?,” Opinion, June 24
I would like to commend Nakita Valerio for her pointed, and pertinent, article.
There has been little, if anything, concrete done by governmental bodies to counteract the growing threat of radical, right-wing extremist groups. These so-called “patriot” groups have confused or ignored the definition of free speech.
Free speech is not a licence to spew hatred and vitriol over those whom you dislike -
School boards grapple with impending legal marijuana
Never did Alberta School Boards Association president Mary Martin think she’d have a file labelled “Marijuana” among her advocacy documents.
As the July 2018 date for legal recreational marijuana in Canada approaches, every school board in the province will have to revisit policies and procedures, from student codes of conduct to rules about administering medication, said Kevin Andrea, superintendent of Whitecourt-based Northern Gateway Public Schools.

Editorial: Balanced rules needed for police street checks
If you are a black or aboriginal Edmontonian, there’s a significantly greater chance that police will stop you for no apparent reason as you walk or drive down the street.
Data obtained this week by activist group Black Lives Matter show police “carded” 22,689 people in 22,969 street checks in 2016. The numbers show black people and aboriginal people, especially women, were questioned and documented in street checks at a higher rate than their share of the population warrants. -
Canopy Growth to build Edmonton's first medical marijuana production plant
