Aviation enthusiasts celebrated 90 years since Blatchford Field was transformed from a farmer’s field to the gateway to the north.
Denny May, son of famed bush pilot Wop May, was the keynote speaker at the Alberta Aviation Museum’s 90th-anniversary celebration of Blatchford Field on Saturday, which included re-enactments, dress-up opportunities for children, access to aircraft cockpits normally off limits to the public and other family events.
The celebration took place from 10 a.m.

Oilers add to goaltending depth at Day 2 of NHL draft
CHICAGO — With so much of the attention in Edmonton being given to young superstars who can put the puck in the net, the Oilers shifted their focus Saturday to a guy in charge of keeping it out.
With their first pick on Day 2 of the NHL entry draft (78th overall), they selected Edmonton-born goalie Stuart Skinner from the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
“We really like him, obviously,” said Oilers Director of Player Personnel Bob Green. “(Goalie coaches) Dustin Schwartz and Sylvai -
Ponoka RCMP search for five suspects in home invasion
Mounties are searching for five suspects after a home invasion at a Ponoka residence in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police responded to a call around 2 a.m. in the Morningside area of Ponoka, located about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton.
Officers found two residents who had minor injuries after an altercation inside the home, police said in a news release.
Five men, armed with a firearm, entered the home and restrained the two residents. The suspects left with five firearms, coins and -

The Edmonton Oilers hosted their 11th annual Locker Room Sale Saturday on the floor of Rogers Place selling game-used sticks, gloves, jerseys, skates, socks and pucks, much of it signed by players. New “team issued” equipment was also up for grabs.
Signed Heritage Classic jerseys were for sale including those worn by Oilers alumni Randy Gregg, Charlie Hu -
Edmonton Oilers 2017 draft review: Kailer Yamamoto the feature addition among seven selected hopefuls
As usual Day Two of the NHL Draft proceeded at a lot brisker and more business-like pace, with the league completing the final six rounds in about the same amount of time that Round One alone took on Friday. Also as usual, the major headlines were made on Friday night.
So it was for the Edmonton Oilers, who made no trades involving NHL players but stuck to the business of picking 18-year-old kids. The one trade involving the Oilers saw the locals package both of the picks they had previously acq -

Police lay homicide charges in 2015 death in central Alberta
Mounties have charged a 25-year-old man with homicide after a “lengthy investigation” into the 2015 death of his mother in central Alberta.
Maskwacis RCMP found Sharon Ermineskin dead in her residence on July 3, 2015, said a Saturday news release.
The major crimes south unit led the investigation into her death on the Ermineskin First Nation, located about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton.
Scott Ermineskin is charged with manslaughter and indignity to human remains.

Edmonton Oilers select rearguard Philip Kemp with final pick, #208 overall
With their last pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers went back to the blueline, picking big right-shooting defenceman Philip Kemp from the US National Team Development Program. He served as captain of the national U-18 team and was an assistant at the U-18 Worlds, where his team won the gold medal.
Sportsnet commentator Brian Lawton was familiar with this player and offered these words:
“One of the guys I focussed on for this draft was Philip Kemp, another player from the NTDP, -

Edmonton Oilers use 177th pick on centre Skyler (son of Rod) Brind'Amour
With the 177th pick of the 2017 entry draft, the Edmonton Oilers selected centre Skyler Brind’Amour. He is the son of former NHLer Rod Brind’Amour. Jim Matheson of the Journal reports: “Skyler Brind’Amour supposed to go to Chilliwack in BCJHL this upcoming season, then off to Michigan State.”
The broadcast team on Sportsnet had little to say about Skyler, son of Rod, and there’s little on the Internet, save from McKeen Hockey’s Brendan Ross, who  -
Edmonton Oilers select left winger Kirill Maksimov #146 overall
With their fifth round pick the Edmonton Oilers have selected left winger Kirill Maksimov (alternate spelling: Maximov). Besides having dual spellings of his name, he’s a dual citizen who was born in Concord, Ontario but grew up in Mosow.
While he played for Russia internationally at the recent U-18 championships (winning a bronze medal along with teammate Dmitri Samorukov), Maksimov was considered a domestic player when he was drafted into the Ontario Hockey League, where he played with S -
Ruth B delights friends and fans alike at packed Starlite Room show
It’s possible you could have fit a few more people into the club for Ruth B’s performance at the Starlite Room on Friday night, but only barely.
Word is that the 21-year-old local singer-songwriter’s headlining performance was a sellout, and from the number of people scrunched in that hotbox of a room it seems quite possible. Some were family and friends, some were fans, a few probably came out of curiosity to see the woman (real name Ruth Berhe) who had become an internet sens -

Edmonton Oilers use 115th pick to draft winger Ostap Safin, who might be another Slepyshev
With the 115th pick in the NHL draft, the Edmonton Oilers took Ostap Safin.
On Sportsnet, analyst Brian Lawton said of the massive Czech winger: “This pick I would imagine maybe they’re hoping to get the type of results they got from Anton Slepyshev, who was picked 88th. In Safin’s case, he’s a big man. Think Patrick Maroon…. He’s surprisingly more mobile than you would think for a guy his size…He’s another one of those projects. Give him time. L -
Edmonton Oilers use 78th pick to take goalie Stuart Skinner from the Lethbridge Hurricanes
Oilers make an odd trade giving up two mid-round picks for one mid-round pick
The Edmonton Oilers used the 82nd overall pick acquired in the trade with St. Louis for Nail Yakupov to package with the 126th pick in the draft and acquire the 78th pick from Arizona.
With that pick, the Oilers drafted Lethbridge goalie Stuart Skinner. Skinner is an Edmonton kid who played for the South Side Athletic Club.

Edmonton Oilers select defenceman Dmitri Samorukov with 84th overall selection of 2017 Draft
Edmonton Oilers used their third round pick to select left-shooting defenceman Dmitri Samorukov. The Russian rearguard played for Guelph Storm of the OHL this past season, where he scored 4-16-20 in 67 games. His -24 rating doesn’t look good, but this is in context of a last-place team that was outscored by 95 goals (by way of comparison, the Storm’s leading scorer, 16-year-old defenceman (!) Ryan Merkley, went -41).
Samorukov did experience some success at the end of the season, whe -
Paula Simons: Cannabis lounges? Pot shops? Edmonton city council enters weed world
Denyse Doran is what you might call a pot pro.
For more than 20 years, she and her family have owned and operated the Jupiter Cannabis Shop on Whyte Avenue. The business has been so successful, they’ve franchised, with five shops now around Edmonton, and others in British Columbia and Saskatchewan. At the moment, they sell primarily marijuana “paraphernalia” — pipes, vaporizers, rolling papers, grinders, and such. But no actual cannabis.
“If I sold pot, I’d be -

Edwin Badong and Rodel Luquingan have a lot of driving to do this summer, taking the Hope Mission’s new food truck across Alberta.
On Friday, the two were busy serving grilled cheese out of the brand new truck at the Tegler Youth Centre’s summer kickoff party at 118 Avenue and 38 Street. Julia Lipscombe: Postpartum hair loss is no joke — but it grows back
“Thinking about getting pregnant again so that my hair stops falling out.”
It was an innocent Facebook post a few months ago. And, for the record, I’m not recommending that.
The post was just a joke that I thought would make a couple of people smile. But it ended up being one of the most popular mom-related things I’ve ever put on social media.
The women in my larger Internet circle really wanted to talk about their hair falling out. And mostly, it seemed, this was one of -
Opinion: Anti-Muslim groups should provoke louder response from our leaders
Imagine, this Sunday, that you were heading to church and you had to worry about armed protesters showing up to terrorize your family and children.
Imagine if, leaving your worship service, you did not know if people intimidating you were the same people who have loaded up on guns, or declared war against your church online, promising to rid “their” country of “your people.” Imagine not knowing if one of them would snap like so many others have before them.
