Apologizing to survivors of the Sixties Scoop, funding water projects and off-reserve housing, and putting more aboriginal people in control of the province’s purse strings are steps on Alberta’s path toward reconciliation with First Nations people, Indigenous Affairs Minister Richard Feehan said Wednesday.
As part of a National Aboriginal Day tour by the minister Wednesday, Feehan highlighted government policies aimed at repairing the relationship between the province and

Complaints filed against judge in jailed sexual assault victim case
Complaints have been filed against the provincial court judge who approved the jailing of a sexual assault victim during the case’s preliminary hearing, a spokesperson for provincial court Chief Judge Terry Matchett confirmed Wednesday.
The woman, whose identity is protected under a court-ordered publication ban, was held in custody for five nights in the Edmonton Remand Centre – the same institution where Lance David Blanchard, the man who was later convicted of violently attacking -

“With their second round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers select … defenceman Matt Benning.”

Country-wide round dance a highlight of Aboriginal Day in Edmonton
People in Edmonton joined hands for a country-wide round dance Wednesday to mark Aboriginal Day.
Edmonton is one of eight cities across the country to host the large morning round dance, where participants at Victoria Park joined hands to create the wide circle, moving to their left with a side-shuffle step following a drumbeat.
The dance is just one of many Aboriginal Day events hosted Wednesday across Edmonton and the country.

Drop-in swimming at outdoor Edmonton pools will be free for the season starting July 1, says the city.
The Wednesday announcement is part of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Confetti Sweets on the move as Terwillegar shop closes
Fans of the local cookie maker, Confetti Sweets, will be sad to note that the Terwillegar location (14253 23 Ave.) is closing June 29. The space they shared with Prairie Mills was just too big once the organic baker moved out at the end of December 2016.
A planned expansion to a new space in Windermere (attached to the back of the Windermere movie theatre) has been delayed until late this year, or early next year, due to construction issues. So this means that Confetti Sweets has two locat -
Upcoming movie ‘The Black’ sources Edmonton talent, locations
It didn’t occur to California-based director Patrick Phillips that he could shoot his movie in Edmonton.
The film, titled The Black, relies heavily on bodies of water in which the horror narrative can drown unsuspecting youth for its concept.
The films editor, the locally -based David Puff, was the one who clued Phillips in that Alberta, despite its flat fields, also has some prime and remote lakes, ideal for establishing suspense in a flick of this kind.

The balloon strike knocked out power between 103 Street and 119 Street and 105 Avenue and 111 Avenue.
Police are directing traffic at several of the affected intersections.
The outage is expected to take several hours to rectify and motorists are asked to avoid the area. -
How non-profits can prepare in today’s business world
Faced with increasing donor expectations, heightened online security risks and a rapid transition to a technology-driven environment, many Canadian non-profit organizations (NPOs) are at a crossroads, according to KPMG partners Robyn Eeson and Jeff Thomas.
The challenges they face are not unlike those confronting many for-profit sectors, which means similar strategies are needed to address them. “Helping our NPO clients starts with helping them understand what is at risk, whether it -

McDavid, Matthews starting to define next NHL generation
Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr made sure they were in Toronto to witness the first NHL meeting between Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews.
McDavid and Matthews didn’t see what the big deal was, but to those on the outside the significance was clear. This was the first meeting between the two players who will define the next generation in the NHL, much as Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin repped the league for the past dozen years and Mario Lemieux and the Great One did before that.

Vegas reached out to Kris Russell's agent about joining Golden Knights
Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee has reached out to Kris Russell’s agent, Allain Roy, about possibly signing with the expansion team.
The Golden Knights had a 72-hour window to talk to other teams’ unrestricted free-agents before Wednesday’s expansion draft announcement.
“We’ve had preliminary talks. I’m waiting to hear back (Tuesday),” Roy said. “They did get back to me but it was on another guy (client on another NHL team). Ther -

As one of the most decorated athletes in the history of Canada’s national cross-country ski team, Sharon Firth of Gwich’in First Nation competed in four Winter Olympic Games alongside her twin sister, Shirley.

Wednesday's letters: Forget weeds, bikes and focus on slayings
City council should concentrate its efforts less on dandelion control and new bike lanes and start focusing on more pressing issues such as the increased homicide rate and crime in this city.
Council should be reviewing policing, the police budget, and the recent trend of closing community police stations. There also needs to be more of a police presence and the closing of these stations certainly deviates from that.
Calgary has suffered the same economic downturn and increased unemployment yet -
Opinion: Opinions and donations welcome at Canadian Blood Services
When you are in the business of providing blood to people in need, taking a pulse comes with the territory.
It’s important for us to also have our finger on the collective pulse. We work hard to earn and keep the trust of Canadians. At Canadian Blood Services, as part of operating in an open and transparent way, we open our doors — literally — and welcome people inside. We invite Canadians to not only witness the inner workings of our governance process, but to have their say. -
Mischief, not hate, the reason Pride flag cut down at Edmonton high school
Police have determined the removal of a Pride flag at an Edmonton high school earlier this month was an act motivated by mischief, not hate.
An investigation by the Edmonton Police Service hate crimes unit determined the act wasn’t hate-based, Const. Trevor Shelrud said Tuesday.
The flag was cut down from a flag pole at Lillian Osborne High School sometime between June 9 and 10, which coincided with the start of Edmonton Pride Festival and the Pride parade.

Edmonton Eskimos season preview 2017
The Edmonton Eskimos are changing things up this season by not changing at all.
At least, when it comes to how they line up in the secondary, which has been the biggest area for concern ever since losing key pieces from the club’s last championship in 2015.
Last year, they were without the likes of Aaron Grymes and John Ojo, who are aiming their sights at NFL opportunities. Gone this off-season is retired veteran cornerback Patrick Watkins.
It’s a level of talent not easily replaced. -
Terry Jones: Edmonton Oilers GM can afford to wait to make moves
It took major league pro sports so long to put a franchise in the gambling capital of the world primarily because it’s the gambling capital of the world.
The crazy thing when it comes to the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League of how, quite openly and quite above board, the franchise may choose to begin with it being clear that the fix is in.
By that, I mean you have to wonder if it works out that general manager George McPhee’s strategy is for the team to tank for the -
