Police found Ian Janvier suffering fatal gunshot wounds after being called to a weapons complaint near 110 Avenue and 84 Street around 6:45 a.m. on Jan. 21. Janvier died later in hospital.
Investigators were later searching for a truck in connection to the slaying which they believed was targeted.

Newfoundland father of man slain in Edmonton pleads for help to get body home
The father of a 33-year-old man stabbed to death in a north Edmonton alley last week is pleading for help to get his son’s body home to the tiny Newfoundland town where he was raised.
Terry Coates — the father of Brent Coates, who was found fatally wounded near 118 Avenue and 50 Street around 3:30 a.m. Friday — said he hopes to lay his son to rest next to his mother at a family plot in Brown’s Arm, N.L., population 400.

New cost-sharing pitch aims to open up Edmonton's industrial land
City councillors endorsed a new way of funding industrial growth Tuesday, one intended to make the city more competitive in the region.
“The city has been under-performing for the last numbers of years,” said Steve Jensen, the city’s development engineer, pitching a plan Tuesday that will give developers predictability without the city committing upfront costs.
The first developer to work on undeveloped land will still be responsible for building main roads and sewer line -

Eggen made the announcement — along with Mark Ramsankar, president of the Alberta Teachers’ Association, and Thomas Holmes, associate superintendent, Sturgeon Public School Division — at the Sturgeon Heights School in St. Albert.

Jason Kenney leadership candidates to face vigorous vetting to stymie 'bozo eruptions'
Alberta Progressive Conservative Leader Jason Kenney says he will push for a rigorous screening of prospective candidates of any new conservative party to spike election-derailing “bozo eruptions.”
“Let’s be honest about this,” Kenney said Monday at a town hall meeting with 350 people at a St. Albert hotel.
“I’ve heard it every day for the past year — every single day — I’ve heard about the one or two bozo eruptions that have imposed a -

Residents call for more safety measures after woman, dog killed at west-end crosswalk
Overhead lights, lower speeds and cutting back bushes around a west-end crosswalk may have helped prevent the Saturday death of a woman and her dog, say some Lewis Estates residents.
The woman, 57, and her dog were killed around 7 p.m. Saturday on Suder Greens Drive after being struck by an SUV.
Floral tributes continued to accumulate Monday. One card tells the victim to “keep laughing” and to “wear that leopard in style.” Another is addressed to “Wanda.&r -

Tuesday's letters: Equal space for patients choosing natural death
Re. “Death on their own terms,” June 17
The Journal is to be commended for giving Archbishop Richard Smith voice on the Catholic perspective on the contentious and evil nature of assisted suicide.
The Catholic church’s long-standing opposition to the culture of death is based on sound reasoning and a common-sense understanding of the value of life, from conception to natural death. It should be noted that Smith’s convictions regarding the sacred nature of human life is sh -
Recreation property prices near Alberta's big cities on the upswing: housing report
Alberta’s recreational property values — particularly those near Edmonton and Calgary — are on the rise, a new market report says.
Recreational properties near the two cities have begun to see their markets turn a corner, with slight year-over-year price increases so far in 2017, shows the 2017 Royal LePage Canadian Recreational Housing Report.
Average regional prices in Alberta include:
• Pigeon Lake: $450,000 for lakefront property; $315,000 for woodland cabin, not -
Opinion: Mental injuries win legal respect after Supreme Court ruling
As recently reported, suicide rates in Alberta have dropped substantially. Between 2015 and 2016, the number of Edmontonians who took their own lives fell from 158 to 121. Provincially, that number decreased from 668 to 496.
The reasons for that development are not entirely clear, but they surely include a shift in social attitudes. A great deal of work remains to be done, but the stigma associated with mental illness has been significantly reduced. It has become much easier to ask for help.

Opinion: Alberta's labour-law changes too rushed to be fair
The Alberta government wanted stronger and more unions in the province. Passing Bill 17: Alberta’s Fair and Family Friendly Workplaces this month will certainly advance that agenda. To the winner has gone the spoils.
But our elected public servants disregarded the tenets of good governance and democracy by rushing the legislation through. Without any reasonably informed liberty to voice their views, Albertans’ right to engage in public dialogue on this important issue was scuttled.

Alberta expects 18,600 new cancer cases this year as Canada grapples with aging population
Alberta needs to redouble its efforts to prevent cancer as the province sees steady growth in the number of new cases, the Canadian Cancer Society says.
A new study released Tuesday estimated that 18,600 Albertans will be diagnosed with cancer this year — part of a cross-Canada rise in new cases as the country grapples with an aging population.
The report found one in two Canadians are expected to contract cancer at some point in their lives, while the country is seeing more new canc -
Edmonton Oilers head coach insists his NHL award nomination a team effort
A few years ago, coaching the Edmonton Oilers into the playoffs warranted a heck of a lot more than a Jack Adams nomination.
For 10 years and two failed rebuilds, the organization was such a mess that any coach who managed to somehow sneak the NHL’s laughingstock into the post-season deserved a Nobel Prize, The Order of Canada and a lifetime supply of Tylenol.
But times have changed here in Edmonton. The Oilers won a lottery, watched a third-overall pick emerge into another all-world centr -
What Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli must now avoid? Locking into cap-killing contracts
All kinds of teams sign big name players with high hopes, only for deals to turn sour
Peter Chiarelli’s first job this summer is to sign up Connor McDavid and Leon Drasaitl to deals that will sufficiently enrich the two players, but not swamp the team’s salary cap.
His second job? Avoid club-killing contracts, any deal for an average veteran that includes too much salary, too much term and too many movement restrictions.

Edmonton 'chasing our tail' on vehicle-for-hire enforcement: councillor
Edmonton is going in circles trying to enforce its vehicle-for-hire rules, says Coun. Michael Walters.
It has a problem with people flagging down cars that are not legally cabs in Edmonton, including regional taxis, TappCars and Uber.
Instead of banning them from having any identification on the outside of their cars, the city is requiring them all to have front and back decals, which will only make it easier to accept street hails, Walters said Monday at the community services committee.
