A recall of potentially contaminated vials of injectable sodium bicarbonate has left Alberta Health Services with less than a week’s supply of the life-saving drug.
“We are looking at everything we can do to obtain the drug,” said Dr. Francois Belanger, chief medical officer and vice president of quality for Alberta Health Services (AHS).
The shortage of sodium bicarbonate, used when a patient’s blood becomes too acidic, is due to a manufacturing issue by Hospira Inc

Craig Button is right. It's time to go with Darnell Nurse and Matt Benning, not sign an expensive veteran
TSN’s Button — along with Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli — is the wisest man in the room when it comes to Oil defence
Between various TV networks, TSN 1260 radio and Oilers Now on CHED, there’s no shortage of interesting interviews with NHL insiders, especially at this time of year when every armchair GM in the land is hungry for information about which players their team might trade and which players their team might bring in.
I soak up all this info, too, as that&rsquo -
Mountie using conducted energy weapon on man at oilsands camp caught on video
A man has been charged with several offences, including assault of a police officer, in an arrest where officers used a conducted energy weapon.
Wood Buffalo RCMP were called out to the Athabasca Lodge in Fort McKay on Thursday after a complaint of an intoxicated male who refused to leave.
When Mounties arrived on scene, they arrested the male, but he avoided being handcuffed, according to a news release.
The man threatened to harm one of the RCMP officers, who then used his Conducted Energy Wea -
AHS to address North American shortage of drug used in life-threatening situations
Hospitals across Alberta are dealing with a shortage of an injectable drug used during treatment of life-threatening situations, according to the province’s health authority.
The shortage of sodium bicarbonate, used when blood becomes too acidic, is due to a manufacturing issue by Hospira Inc., a Pfizer company, Alberta Health Services said in a statement Saturday morning.
According to AHS, the shortage is having an effect across North America, and became more severe earlier in the week wh -
Tzeporah Berman's controversial stint on Alberta oilsands panel comes to an end
Controversial environmentalist Tzeporah Berman is out as a member of a government-appointed committee advising Alberta on how to develop the oilsands.
Berman and four other members of Alberta’s Oil Sands Advisory Group were let go after the 18-member panel wrapped up the first two phases of its consultations.
Environment Minister Shannon Phillips said Berman and the others contributed critical expertise in the early stages, but the panel’s focus is now narrowing.
“The first two -
Resplendent rooftop: Vicky's Homes looks to keep winning with Verity
After collecting a bevy of local, provincial and national home construction awards during the last year, what does Vicky’s Homes do for an encore? The local builder aims to keep the hot streak going with Verity, a 4,228-square-foot, three-storey showhome that anchors the One at Windermere neighbourhood in southwest Edmonton.
“Our main focus is to improve on what we have,” said Vicky Kujundzic, owner of Vicky’s Homes, who notes that her ever-growing reputation increases th -
Traditional ceremonies, contemporary singers, all part of largest-ever Aboriginal Day Live
Whether it’s a musical performance, a cultural experience or a spiritual ceremony, Aboriginal Day Live is geared to highlight indigenous culture across the country. But that shouldn’t suggest it only involves indigenous peoples or that it can only be appreciated by aboriginal audiences.
“This is our day to celebrate the achievements of indigenous people across Canada,” said Lisa Squire, of Cree background, part of the small army of organizers with the Aboriginal People&rs -
Top classical chamber musicians to play Summer Solstice Music Festival
Edmonton has a festival for just about every kind of music, but it is gratifying that it has one for a less obvious summer fare — classical chamber music.
The quality of chamber music in Edmonton — both homegrown, and in the calibre of visiting Canadian and international artists during the season — has been one of Edmonton’s little-sung musical success stories. The Edmonton Chamber Music Society has played a large part in that, and its Summer Solstice Music Festival, runn -
Saturday's letters: There is a plan to respond to wildfires
Re. “As wildfires worsen, we need to find a way to respond,” Graham Thomson, June 15
What’s a better expenditure of limited resources? A. Spend billions on reducing man-made greenhouse gas emissions by 1/10th of one per cent by 2050 with no way of tracking whether or not that will have any effect?
Or B. Spend millions expanding and implementing the Alberta FireSmart program? I pick B.
Thomson’s logic goes off the rails after stating government and society don’t seem -
Opinion: That every life matters must inform assisted-dying debate
A court decision has resulted in the legalization one year ago of physician-assisted suicide in Canada, something that was unthinkable just five years ago.
We as citizens – whether people of faith or not – have a responsibility to look critically at the fallout of that decision and consider some important questions about how it is changing our society.
We hear that this is a matter of personal choice. But is it really a choice when a patient does not have access to palliative care th -
Cuts looming for players on deep Edmonton Eskimos camp roster
The Edmonton Eskimos 2017 training camp roster gathered for the last time in the visitors locker-room of Investors Group Field following Thursday’s 38-38 tie with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
With the final round of training-camp cuts scheduled for Saturday by 8 p.m., they knew they wouldn’t all be seeing each other in green and gold again.
“We’ve been saying it our whole camp, I feel like this is one of the deepest camps I’ve seen and I’ve been around football -

Review: O Fortuna! Bill Eddins ends tenure at Edmonton Symphony Orchestra with Carmina Burana
Bill Eddins ended his popular 12-year tenure as music director of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra with a suitably splendid concert Friday at the Winspear, which he is repeating Saturday.
