The Art Gallery of Alberta’s 10th biennial running through Sept. 10 is called For the Time Being, and in the sense of questioning its own authority to speak for others — and in some ways even itself — feels very contemporary, indeed.
In a terrific back and forth between curators Peta Rake and Kristy Trinier called The End of the World in the show’s catalogue, the two discuss how many dynamic, far-reaching changes have hit both contemporary art and the larger wor

Jubilee Park Campground opens two new comfort cabins
Edmontonians without a tent but wanting to get out camping have a new option at Wizard Lake.
Jubilee Park Campground held a grand opening Wednesday for two new comfort camping cabins, the first of their kind in the Leduc region.
Dean Ohnysty, director of parks and recreation for Leduc County, hopes to attract new customers to the campground, about a 40-minute drive south of Edmonton. He thinks the new sites will be attractive to seniors, young families and new Canadians.

Duo defy death daily under the circus big top
Aura Cardinali and Werner Guerrero have been travelling the world with their high-wire act for more than three decades and while they’re household names in Europe, the Guerrero Duo weren’t as well known on this side of the Atlantic until their appearance last year on the popular TV show America’s Got Talent.
“It was all too staged,” says Cardinali of their time in the TV spotlight, which included them performing on a windy day in Los Angeles. &ld -
10 things to do in Edmonton this week: The Darcys, Monty Python and the Freewill Festival
The Darcys
Toronto’s The Darcys aren’t your standard alt-rock band. They’ve drawn inspiration from the likes of authors Cormac McCarthy and Jane Austen, from whom they derived their name, and they’ve been known to go down some strange musical pathways, like “reinterpreting” Steely Dan’s Aja album, which they did back in 2012. In a surprise move the band pared down to the duo of Jason Couse and Wes Marskell a couple of years back; they’ll be in town -

First wave of bike lanes and signal adjustments set to hit downtown Friday
People driving, cycling or walking downtown should all expect to see changes on the street Friday as the first three legs of the bike lane network open.
Barriers on 100 Avenue, 103 Street and 107 Street will be removed starting after the morning rush hour and Edmonton’s new street education team will be handing out flyers and giving directions at key intersections.
“It’s a huge learning curve,” said Olga Messinis, project manager with the city, as she took local media on -
Man who fled after running over his son's mother at casino jailed 15 months
A man who fled in his van after running over the mother of his child in a casino parking lot was handed a 15-month jail term Thursday by a judge who described the man’s lack of remorse as “defiant.”
Jahanbakhsh Ahmadi, 52, was sentenced after entering a guilty plea in late 2016 to one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and offer assistance, knowing that bodily harm had been caused, with intent to escape civil or criminal liability.

Colorado Avalanche reportedly in on Eberle, so can Edmonton Oilers get Tyson Barrie?
Dreger: Six or seven teams rumoured to be in on Jordan Eberle with Avs and Isles at top of list
This in from NHL insider Darren Dreger, talking to Dan Tencer and Wil Fraser on TSN1260 this morning, an update on what sounds like a warm-to-hot market for Edmonton Oilers winger Jordan Eberle: “Look, the Oilers value Jordan Eberle. It’s not like they’re just willing to take just about anything to move out his contract. I mean, the cap relief is of significance but they also see an -
Eva Colmers' new film explores immigrants' long-distance communication woes
As an immigrant who’s lived in Canada for 25 years, Edmonton filmmaker Eva Colmers knows something about long-distance relationships.
Her new short film, Happy Birthday, Mango!, tells the story of a live-in Filipino nanny struggling to stay connected to her son, who still lives back home. Colmers, let’s be clear, is not a Filipino nanny.
“That’s correct,” she laughs. “But I am an immigrant and can very much relate to the theme of not being there where the majo -
Pair of Edmonton-area prospects could be picked in 2017 NHL Entry Draft's early rounds
Spruce Grove Saints defenceman Ian Mitchell and Lethbridge Hurricanes goalie Stuart Skinner are built for today’s National Hockey League entry draft — a smallish puck-mover and a tall netminder.
The Edmonton-area players will likely be selected in the second or third round June 24 in Chicago, with Mitchell staying at his parents’ place in Calahoo, Alta., waiting for a phone call from the draft while the family plans a barbecue.
“I’ll probably have some chores to do& -
Callingwood Farmers’ Market: bringing the community together
Callingwood Farmers’ Market has been a staple in the west Edmonton community for over 33 years. With a long list of vendors, the market draws a regular crowd twice a week, on Sundays from 10-3 p.m., and on Wednesdays from 12-5 p.m.
With an 80/20 rule, where 80 per cent of the vendors sell products that they have made, baked or grown, the market is proud to be an Alberta Approved Famers’ Market. The market also has an even mix of artisans and food vendors.

“Our family is grieving the profound loss of Ruth Kelly. Health City aims to make Edmonton hospitals a test bed for new technology
Edmonton’s new Health City initiative unveiled Thursday aims to open Alberta’s hospitals and health data to a growing sector of health researchers and entrepreneurs.
The brand and idea — first pitched in Mayor Don Iveson’s 2016 State of the City address — aims to use collaboration to address one of the big gaps that’s keeping the great health research happening in Edmonton from leading to more local jobs.

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 29-year-old man after violence broke out Thursday morning at a northside apartment.
Firefighters were the first to respond to the 4:20 a.m. scene near Londonderry Heights apartment complex, 7220 144 Ave., when someone knocked on the front door of Londonderry Fire Station 14 asking for assistance. Firefighters applied first aid before EMS arrived and took the man to hospital.

Stump Kitchen attracts viewers with comic message of diversity
Buoyed with oodles of positive feedback, local one-handed cook Alexis Hillyard is launching a fundraising campaign to enable her to make cooking videos for a living.
Hillyard, who has a YouTube series called Stump Kitchen, first came to my attention in the summer of 2015 when I saw her video on making gluten-free waffles with one hand. The video was inspiring — not because of the disability, but because Hillyard made cooking seem like so much fun.
Now, more than a year later, Hillyard -

In her words: Why I chose a medically assisted death
In the months before her death, Martine Partridge wrote a letter to family and friends explaining her decision to seek medical assistance to end her life.
She started the letter on December 2016, shortly after the young Edmontonian received news her cancer was progressing. It was finished in subsequent weeks in the hospital as she learned all her options for treatment had been exhausted.
Excerpts from the letter were presented at her memorial service last month, but it is published here in full. -
One year after medically assisted dying was legalized, the attitude in Alberta is less fraught than some feared
Martine Partridge chose to die on a Sunday.
The date had a certain symmetry, she felt, since she had been born on a Sunday nearly 40 years earlier.
Symmetry was meaningful to Partridge, who loved literature and poetry, classical music and yoga.
There was no such beauty or balance in cancer.
The disease had instead wrought its own capricious timetable, irrevocably depriving Partridge of her most basic pleasures.

Thursday's letters: Calling foul on weed-choked sports fields
I’m the director of the Storm soccer program in southeast Edmonton.
Last Wednesday, our game for the U-16 boys Tier 1 squad was moved to a field in Kenilworth. Upon arrival, the field conditions were clearly appalling, so much so that the referee suggested postponing due to the overwhelming number of dandelions and weeds.
While the intention of the city to not spray pesticides may be admirable, common sense is now saying that they’ve actually made the problem worse as it will -
Opinion: Keep legalized cannabis profits at home with stand-alone stores
The Alberta government has wisely begun a broad consultation process so the public can provide their input on the upcoming legalization of cannabis.
As both the provinces and the federal government attempt to implement new laws and regulations across the country, Alberta has the opportunity to get it right and become a leader in the safe, informed and responsible recreational consumption of cannabis.
Alberta can build from the strengths and avoid the pitfalls experienced by other jurisdictions t -
Education minister to pare back board that tackles truancy
Alberta’s education minister is creating a new provincial attendance office and cutting the size of a board he said has been ineffective at improving chronic truancy.
Just a quarter of students referred to Alberta’s 118-member attendance board in 2014-15 improved their school attendance, Eggen said Wednesday.
The quasi-judicial board, which has powers such as referring a truant student to court and ordering parents to pay a fine or take their child to a treatment program, may no -
Edmonton's new 'smart city' data network aims to arm citizens with the facts
A volunteer group of tech experts is creating a low-cost network of sensors in Edmonton that could level the playing field in favour of local citizens when it comes to gathering data.
BetaCity is testing the network to measure air quality, cyclists and foot traffic, but the backbone of the system can make gathering data flexible and economic for anyone. That means data to prove a point in a civic debate or highlight public risks may no longer be something only in the hands of government and -

Transfusion recipient urges Edmontonians to donate blood during critical shortage

Graham Thomson: Alberta's wildfire seasons to get worse thanks to climate change
Here is a snippet both reassuring and troubling from the recent reports into last year’s disastrous Fort McMurray wildfire.
It’s a facet of the fire that was largely overlooked in the politically charged release of the reports a week ago where the opposition — and the news media — focused on the delayed delivery of the two documents.
But it’s an aspect worth noting. The residents of Fort McMurray were saved primarily not by government nor by luck, but by themselves. -

The memorial game is scheduled for 8 p.m. June 17 at the Jubilee Recreation Centre in Fort Saskatchewan between the St. Albert Sr. Miners and the Fort Saskatchewan Sr. Warriors, with 50-5 -
Paula Simons: He may be Canada's 'ultimate troll,' but is an Edmonton blogger also a criminal?
Police charged Edmonton blogger Barry Kent Winters, 62, with wilfully promoting hatred against an identifiable group June 1.
That’s an extremely rare charge under the Criminal Code. The Edmonton Police Service can’t recall any other time when they’ve charged someone under its provisions. There’ve been just three charges under that section in Alberta in the last six years.
Winters’ appalling blogs, the Baconfat Chronicles and the Baconfat News, have been a cancer in -
Parents hopeful fatality inquiry will bring justice for child who died in care
In the front row at the fatality inquiry into the death of Nevaeh Michaud, John and Desiree Knoll sat in the provincial courtroom with a family friend, looking at photos of their daughter, taking notes and occasionally tearing up.
Eight-year-old Nevaeh died in 2014 at an Edmonton group home from an overdose of the sleep aid chloral hydrate. Her mother Desiree Knoll said the inquiry was painful, but that she wanted to represent her daughter.

Woman killed by lawn mower at work in eastern Alberta town
A 21-year-old Saskatchewan woman is dead after the large lawn mower she was working on fell on her in the Town of Dewberry maintenance yard on Tuesday.
A man who was walking by saw the woman trapped beneath the large tractor mower around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday and ran across the street to the fire station to get help, said Sgt. Juan Huss, speaking on behalf of the Kitscoty RCMP on Wednesday.
“She was doing some maintenance work on that and it was jacked up and unfortunately she was unde -
Older female elk 'virtually bulletproof' as they learn to avoid hunters
After seven years of studying the movements and behaviours of female elk, University of Alberta researchers discovered they become “virtually bulletproof” as they age.
“Elk learn to become shy as they get older,” said University of Alberta biologist Mark Boyce. “They hunker down in the deep forest and stay in rugged terrain. Those types of behaviours were very effective (for survival) in heavily hunted areas.”
Boyce and two former post-doctoral fello -
Edmonton Eskimos head coach recalls playing for and against CFL legend Don Matthews
The significance of Don Matthews’s death Wednesday wasn’t lost on Edmonton Eskimos head coach Jason Maas.
The Don’s time in Edmonton, one of six different stops along the way to a Canadian Hall of Fame career with a 231-132-1 record as a head coach, coincided with Maas’s arrival in the CFL.
“My rookie year was with Don Matthews as the head coach, so to come into the building and to have at the time, or shortly thereafter, I think, he became the winningest head coach -
Alberta Christian school worried school division could ban Bible verses
CAMROSE — A Christian school southeast of Edmonton says it fears the school division is moving to censor what parts of the Bible can be taught.
Several Bible verses were to be included in a handbook for students at the Cornerstone Christian Academy in Kingman, Alta.
Trustees from the Battle River School Division say they believe the verses might contravene Alberta’s human rights code.
School division spokeswoman Diane Hutchinson says there is an obligation to follow the provincial sc
