Growing up in the First Nations community of Saddle Lake, Boyd Whiskeyjack always knew he was different from other kids.
“I wasn’t fooling anyone, so I decided to come out when I was around 15,” he said. He was the first person he knew on the reservation to do so, and on Saturday, Whiskeyjack took on another kind of leadership role.
For the first time in the event’s 37-year history, the region’s two-spirit community served as grand marshalls of the Edmon

Edmonton area could become Canadian centre for marijuana industry, executive says
The huge production and processing plant Aurora Cannabis is building beside Edmonton International Airport could help make the region a centre for Canada’s marijuana industry, a company official says.
Aurora is investing more than $100 million into the 75,000-square-metre Aurora Sky project, which should be in production by the end of the year and completed construction by the time recreational pot is legalized in July 2018, Aurora executive vice-president Cam Battley said Friday.

Epcor pitches new solar farm near Edmonton's Cameron Heights
Edmonton could see its first solar-energy farm in the city with a 12-megawatt generation facility planned near the neighbourhood of Cameron Heights.
Epcor unveiled the plan at council’s utility committee meeting Friday, saying the farm would cover 60 hectares of land it owns just south of the E.L. Smith Water Treatment plant in the river valley.
The project still needs an environmental assessment, rezoning approval from city council and provincial approval from the Alberta Utilities Commis -
Julia Lipscombe: Real moms don't have to feel guilty
Mom guilt is so hot right now.
Moms talk in parks and on Internet forums about it. A plethora of books and articles have been written on the subject.
Hollywood even tackled the topic — Bad Moms, starring Mila Kunis, which came out last year (spoiler alert: she wasn’t a bad mom).
It’s not just moms, either. Dads feel guilt, too. And for both sexes — from my admittedly non-scientific observations, at least — it often seems to be triggered by a sense of inadequac -

Saturday's letters: Start planning now for driverless cars
Re. “Self-driving vehicles should spark rethink of LRT plans, council hears,” June 8
The recommendation to create a think-tank on self-driving cars is the most sensible idea coming out of city hall in a long time.
Paul Godsmark is correct that self-driving cars are coming faster than we might think and the technology will produce substantive change. Governments are investing billions in transportation infrastructure with the high likelihood of a boondoggle as schedules will bring it -
Opinion: How to patch up the National Energy Board's reputation
Ottawa is now accepting public comment on the recently released report of its expert panel on the modernization of the National Energy Board (NEB).
The panel made 46 recommendations to the minister of natural resources. Many recommendations, if accepted, would fundamentally change the structure, mandate and governance of the NEB. They would also change how decisions are made about pipelines and transmission lines that cross provincial borders. Unfortunately, the report missed a major opportunity -
Dan Barnes: No more jumping through hoops, 3-on-3 basketball an Olympic event
Taking volleyball to the beach and then to the Olympics provoked explosive growth for the core version of that court sport.
The same exciting thing has just happened to basketball, as three-on-three hoops has made the leap from the streets to the five-ring circus. The International Olympic Committee on Friday announced that the half-court game will be included on the programme for the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.
The reverberations are sure to be felt wherever basketball is played.

Graham Thomson: Alberta government's credibility singed with delayed release of wildfire reports
The devastating Fort McMurray wildfire that produced so much confusion in the Alberta government last year is still creating some chaos 13 months later.
This time the chaos is political, and self-inflicted.
The fire went from nuisance to calamity in a matter of hours, initially overstretching the ability of officials both local and provincial to react efficiently.
The highs and lows of the response to the largest natural disaster in Canadian history are spelled out in two reports hurriedly relea -

Latvia’s ambassador to Canada, Karlis Eihenbaums, reminded Canadian troops destined for his home country as part of NATO’s enhanced forward presence that their role in the tiny Baltic nation is to show global solidarity in the region and to the rest of the world.
In his address to about 100 members of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Edmonton on Friday, Eihenbaums said their presence in Latvia is welcomed as is their commitment to take the lead of a 1,200-troop multinatio -
City target to divert 90 per cent of waste from landfills in the dumps
One of Edmonton’s biggest environmental boasts is now looking unattainable without a major investment in curbside compost collection.
Edmonton has a long-standing target of diverting 90 per cent of its residential waste from the landfill. But despite major investments in recycling, composting and biofuel, that 90 per cent goal keeps shifting farther into the future.

Edmonton Eskimos head coach irate over lack of discipline in practice
The Edmonton Eskimos just survived a Maas-oon.
Day 13 of training camp ended with head coach Jason Maas storming off the field, but not before rounding up his players for a verbal dressing down that reminded them, in no uncertain — or printable — terms, who’s the boss, how it ultimately falls on his shoulders when they don’t do their jobs, and for anyone not willing to get with the program, there’s the door.
Tony Washington was shown it midway through Friday’s -

It’s only June. But inside the Singhmar Centre for Learning, the back-to-school excitement is feverish. PCL construction workers are beavering away, putting the finishing touches on the striking addition to the NorQuest College campus — the first new building NorQuest has seen in 47 years.
Think how the University of Alberta, NAIT and MacEwan University have changed since 1970. Think of all the new buildings they’ve built, how their campuses have grown.
