Don Iveson suggests flood cleanup might be cheaper than some prevention
Should Edmonton upgrade its drainage system to protect against the storm it’s seen already, the storm it expects to come, or the storm that’s technically possible?
That’s the question city councillors wrestled with at council’s utility committee meeting Friday as they struggled through a flood-mitigation plan that could cost between $2.6 billion and $4.7 billion, depending on the level of protection.
“Is that better shared with the insurance industry as a long-shot -

Brian Jean 'angry' over Fort McMurray wildfire reports, calls for public inquiry
Wildrose leader Brian Jean is repeating calls for a judge-led public inquiry after two reports concluded poor communication hindered the government’s response to the Fort McMurray wildfire.
“We need transparency from this government,” said Jean at a Friday news conference, where he was visibly emotional talking about the reports released by the government Thursday night.
“I was so angry yesterday.”

Shared hilarity, curiousity, are the key comforts at Improvaganza Festival
It’s frequently hilarious but in the end Rapid Fire Theatre’s Improvaganza Festival thrives on a shared experience between actors and their audience, inventing stories in the moment.
“Improv in its nature tends to be quite funny,” said Matt Schumann, artistic director of Rapid Fire Theatre and an improviser himself. “It’s not necessarily because we’re trying to be funny but you’re discovering the show at the same time the audience is and these mome -
#Landmarks: Immense Mode stands tall as artistic and technical marvel
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a landmark is “an object or feature that is easily recognized from a distance, especially one that enables someone to establish their location.” That definitions seems fitting for Immense Mode, the 20-foot-tall, 42,000-pound brick and glass mosaic sculpture that has whimsically welcomed commuters and shoppers at the Southgate Transit Station since 2009.ShareLandmarks: Immense ModeTumblr Pinterest Google Plus Reddit LinkedInEmailGALLERY:Landmar -
Growing Things: 'Hardening off' produces hardier plants
Q: I am relatively new to gardening, and I am growing my own vegetables from seed for the first time. They are doing very well but I ran across the term ‘hardening off’ the other day. I understand from the online research I have done that young plants cannot be planted straight from the house into the ground, but I am unsure of the right method to use when preparing them for planting outdoors. I am hoping you can help me with this.

Faulkner Real Estate Report: Ready to take the home purchase plunge?
Buying a home is, for most of us, the largest single purchase of our lives. How do you know if you’re ready to take this step?
The first question should be, are my finances in order? Most people underestimate what their debt load is, and overestimate what they can afford. A good place to start is a conversation with your banker or mortgage broker. They will be able to determine whether you qualify for a mortgage and how much money the bank is willing to lend you. They will check your credi -
Hot competition at Porkapalooza as NAIT barbecue team hits the grill
Entering this weekend’s Porkapalooza barbecue competition, the NAIT culinary arts team felt pretty cocky. After all, they had just won the award for best ribs at the Smokin’ Q competition at Lynnwood Ranch near Okotoks, part of three events that make up the Alberta Cup for provincial barbecue supremacy.
But even as NAIT instructors Randall Stasuk, Daniel Brasileiro, Nigel Webber, Ron Wong and pitmaster Josh Ward practised with their brand new Louisiana Grills 1100, they knew victory -
Wildrose calls for public inquiry in wake of 'damning' wildfire reports
Wildrose leader Brian Jean repeats calls for a judge-led public inquiry after two reports concluded poor communication hindered the government’s response to the Fort McMurray wildfire.
“Should the evacuation order have come earlier than it did?” Jean said at press conference Friday morning at the Legislature. “We need transparency from this government.”
Jean says the government was negligent by waiting to release the reports. This is a damning report, we NEED a judge -
Hardened officers ‘nauseated’ by ‘evil’ dad charged with sex offences against three daughters
A rural Alberta father west of Edmonton is facing 23 sexual offences against his three daughters who were abused over the span of six years, says the province’s joint crime-fighting task force.
The 41-year-old man, in custody since his arrest in November, is charged with 23 offences — including two counts of incest, human trafficking, arranging for a sexual offence against a child, two counts of sexual assault with a weapon as well as making child pornography — inve -
How urban sprawl has fragmented farms in the Edmonton-Calgary corridor since the 1980s
David Wedman and his family have had a front-row seat to Edmonton’s urban sprawl.
For decades, the grain farmer on the city’s southwestern border has watched subdivisions and other urban development creep onto some of the province’s best cropland.
“As a kid growing up, there used to be 25 farms in this area. Now there’s only half a dozen,” said Wedman, who’s farmed for almost 50 years on the property that’s been in his family for more -

Edmonton Prospects chew up Okotoks Dawgs pitching in 11-2 win
Starting pitcher Noah Gapp allowed two runs on five hits and struck out eight batters in a complete-game performance as the host Edmonton Prospects handily took down the Okotoks Dawgs 11-2 Thursday night at Re/Max Field.
A slew of singles led to a six-run third inning by the Prospects (4-1). They chased Dawgs starter Jared Spearing from the mound early in the inning, the 7-1 score giving them a buffer ample enough to eventually hand the Dawgs(4-1) their first loss of the season in front of 821 f -
Breakfast T: Sidney Crosby rises to lift his Penguins to edge of second Stanley Cup in a row
Yes, he gets every call in the book, and he gets away with things no other player in the league would ever get away with — like groin spears, finger removals, head smashes and bottle tosses — but Sidney Crosby is cementing his legacy in these Stanley Cup finals.
Say what you will about the Pittsburgh Penguins captain and the diplomatic immunity he seems to have been granted from the NHL, you cannot argue with the impact he is having on a series that looked it was slipping from Pittsb -
Opinion: Trudeau and Notley must hold firm on Kinder Morgan
In the wake of last month’s B.C. provincial election, which produced no clear winner, the NDP and Green Party have agreed to unite with an eye on forming the next government, raising serious questions about future energy policy in British Columbia.
During the campaign, the two parties were considerably more stringent on both energy and climate change than the incumbent B.C. Liberals. A key element of the Green/NDP coalition is their opposition to the proposed Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain E -
New pest chomps through Edmonton's elm canopy
Edmonton’s renowned elm forest is under attack from a tiny insect that’s coating branches and leaves with a sticky film as it slowly chomps its way across the city.
European elm scale attaches itself to the bark and feeds on sap, leading to yellow, prematurely falling foliage, branch dieback and, in some cases, death, Mike Jenkins, a senior city biological sciences technologist, said Thursday.
He’s concerned that what was once an isolated pest is spreading through mature neighb -
Mixed feelings about federal inquiry ahead of Stolen Sisters and Brothers Awareness Walk
Earlier this year, Stephanie Harpe attended a meeting in Edmonton for families hoping to participate in the federal government’s inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.
Harpe, whose mother was killed by a stalker in Edmonton in 1999, has long pushed for answers on why so many indigenous women go missing or meet violent ends. But something about the Edmonton meeting felt wrong.
“There was hardly anybody from the federal government or the RCMP or the city police there, -
Friday's letters: School dress codes discredit both genders
Re. “Signs in school bathroom stoke dress code furor,” June 6
If the administration at Breton High School — and all schools — want to foster a professional learning environment, a first step would be to cease the degrading infantilization that has become so common and codified in our schools.

Editorial: Funding drug court a low-cost way to change lives
Every government-funded program should be so lucky as to have Julia Carriere as an exemplar of its good work.
The 21-year-old woman was seven-months pregnant and addicted to drugs when she was arrested for trafficking in March 2016. Getting picked up by police turned out to be the second chance she needed and a timely blessing for her then-unborn son Richard, now one year old.

Fort McMurray wildfire reaction marred by communication gaps, says report
Two reports into the catastrophic Fort McMurray wildfire describe confusion and chaos in the initial response to what would become the largest natural disaster in Canadian history.
Communication gaps and delays in the early days of the blaze, and mixed messages to residents about the need to evacuate, were all identified as problems that plagued the provincial response.
But both reports also point to the determination and generosity of residents who helped each other in a mass evacuation of the -
David Staples: Lower residential speed limits must not drive another cash grab
It’s an excellent idea to lower speed limits on residential streets from the current limit of 50 km/h to 40 km/h or even to 30 km/h. That said, such a major change is going to blow up big time on city council if traffic safety officials bungle the transition like they’ve done with previous major changes in enforcement.
Many drivers will struggle with lower residential limits, especially at first. If the city’s first and main instinct is to relentlessly hammer them wit -

Neighbours leave flowers at the scene of deadly house fire
A small memorial has taken shape outside the scene of an Edmonton house fire that resulted in the death of a young girl.
On Thursday, a neighbour said the girl’s grandfather had arrived to collect flowers and other items left at the home and was touched by the gifts.
The neighbour placed a red poppy lawn ornament outside 17808 93 St., where a cooking-oil fire sent two young people and their grandfather to the hospital Sunday evening.

But during that five-year agreement, Epcor also saved Edmonton customers $52 million through a series of cost-cutting exercises. Plus, the city-owned corporation paid out $705 million in dividends, profits from power and water work across North America that went straight to lowering Edmonton’s property taxes.
On Friday, Epcor presents it final annual report in the latest f -
City to look into school-bus parking on residential streets
Edmonton school-bus drivers begged city councillors to allow them to park their buses on residential streets during school hours Thursday, saying it would have a profound benefit to their lives.
“Quite often I can’t even go and use a washroom because I can’t get out of the bus,” said 18-year veteran bus driver Shelley Miller, asking the city to let her park her bus at home so she can rest for an hour. Under the current bylaw, she faces a $100 fine for parking anywhere but -

The sprawling Northland School Division’s first elected board in seven years should have 11 trustees, according to public feedback.
Northland’s government-appointed trustee recommends Alberta’s education minister approve a new 11-member board structure of representatives from across northern Alberta who will be required to meet regularly with newly formed school councils from each of the district’s 23 schools.
It’s a departure from the previous approach, where each -

Majority of home blood-pressure monitors inaccurate, Alberta-based study says
A University of Alberta research study has found people who use home blood-pressure monitors could be getting inaccurate readings more often than not.
Dr. Jennifer Ringrose, who led the study, said that a variance of less than five millimetres of mercury (mmHg) — the units used to measure blood pressure — would be acceptable. The study showed that about 70 per cent of the time the home machines were off by more than five mmHg. The devices were inaccurate by 10 mmHg about 30 per -
Is your property tax fair? New mapping project gives residents tools to better figure it out
A local software programmer has found a way to convert all of Edmonton’s tax assessment data into an easy-to-read map.
The new online tool lets planners understand patterns — quickly spotting areas of urban decay — and lets individual homeowners quickly see how the city is comparing their homes to their neighbours. Residents can judge for themselves if their property tax bill is fair.
“This is awesome. It really is,” said Robert Summers, a professor in the Universit -
City predicts long-overdue Walterdale Bridge will open in September
More than one million man-hours later, the new Walterdale Bridge is still not finished, but city officials say the end is in sight.

Adam Laughlin, deputy city manager of integrated infrastructure, at the bridge Thursday with reporters, said based on the contractors’ latest schedule, the main portion of the bridge will be open in September, barring any major weather dela -
Barnes: Offence intended — look for Eskimos to run up score
The Edmonton Eskimos’ no-huddle offence was like a new pair of shoes in 2016 — flashy and a tad uncomfortable.
They were No. 1 in the Canadian Football League in first downs, passing touchdowns, net offence, team completion percentage, offensive TDs and second-down conversion percentage.
Quarterback Mike Reilly was first in pass attempts, completions and yards. Receiver Adarius Bowman was first in receptions, yards and games with 100-plus receiving yards. His wingman Derel Walker was -
'Aggressive and comprehensive' changes needed for Athabasca University to survive
Athabasca University will need to undergo a raft of rapid changes, like focusing on collaborations with northern Alberta colleges and partnerships with indigenous education institutions, if it wants to survive into the future, a new government-commissioned report released Thursday says.
An independent third-party review by Ken Coates concluded that the embattled institution will face a “financial crisis” early next year that could jeopardize its future if “aggressive and c
