'Timing was everything': 100 years since first women elected to Alberta legislature
A far-flung Canadian province became the envy of suffragettes across the British Empire when two women were elected to the Alberta legislature on June 7, 1917. Louise McKinney and Roberta MacAdams won a long-sought-after victory while their counterparts from England to New Zealand celebrated the triumph, certain they were next.
Local news coverage was understated: “Alberta will have its first woman representative … Mrs. McKinney is president of the provincial (Women&rsquo -
Man struck down by car on Jasper Avenue, transported to hospital
A man hit by a car on Jasper Avenue just before noon Wednesday was transported to hospital.
Emergency crews quickly gathered several witnesses together and were waiting for police to arrive after the man was whisked away in the ambulance.
A newer model BMW remains parked at the scene.

Live: Councillors debate changes to residential speed limits
City officials say initial polls peg public support for a reduced residential speed limit well above 50 per cent but they don’t want to move further until the Alberta government takes a stand.
The issue is up for debate at council’s urban planning committee Wednesday morning.
Several community groups have been pushing for lower speed limits – 3o or 40 kilometers per hour on local roads. That would not apply to the medium-sized collector roads, which were previously treated as r -
Edmonton's most prolific Yelp reviewers explain why they do it
If you’ve ever researched Edmonton restaurants on Yelp, there’s a good chance you’ve read reviews by Kristin Kalmbach.
The 36-year-old St. Albert resident has written more than 1,000 reviews and added more than 6,000 photos to the site since 2011.
For Kalmbach, any experience with a local business can be broken down into a series of telling details. Over lunch at Washoku Bistro in Westmount last week, she remarked on the decor (“modern but private”) and the tw -
Self-driving vehicles should cause LRT strategy rethink, council told
The coming wave of autonomous vehicles should cause council to think again about it’s LRT strategy, an expert in the technology told city councillors Wednesday.
The wide-ranging debate explored many facets of the coming technology change, including the impact of public transit and job security.
Paul Godsmark, founder of the St. Albert-based Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence, said the 1.5 per cent of working Canadians who drive large trucks for work would be immediately affec -
Sherwood Park man killed in single-vehicle crash near Redwater
A Sherwood Park is dead after his truck veered off the road near Redwater Tuesday evening.
Redwater RCMP said the 37-year-old man was driving a semi-truck with a flat deck trailer and no cargo on Highway 831 when he lost control.
The truck hit the ditch before striking an embankment. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred between Township Road 610 and 612 south of Newbrook, around 110 km northeast of Edmonton.
Traffic was diverted for several hours during the po -
Edmonton Public School Board to rejoin provincial advocacy organization
In a split vote, Edmonton Public school trustees have agreed to rejoin a provincial organization that lobbies for one publicly funded school system in Alberta.
However, the move doesn’t mean the school board is pushing for an end to publicly funded Catholic schools, board chairwoman Michelle Draper said.
“It’s a collective voice. We’re stronger together, so when we come together to talk about important issues, that we can work with our other board colleagues, our other di -

New smart cards for Edmonton Transit boast a 'social justice' edge
Edmonton finally confirmed this week a preferred supplier for its five-year effort to go paperless on Edmonton Transit fares and that’s giving residents a peek at some unexpected benefits.
Vix Technology and its account-based system won’t just make boarding the bus and reloading a transit card easier. According to transit officials, it could also address a persistent inequality issue in Edmonton – fixing this with a simple, technology based solution: “fare capping.” -
Province accused of 'downloading outrage' over supervised injection sites
A frustrated city councillor lashed out at the provincial government Tuesday, accusing them of “downloading outrage” over supervised injection sites.
Ward 6 Coun. Scott McKeen voted in favour of a letter of opinion to support a provincial plan to open four supervised injection sites in the inner core. But that made enemies; neighbouring residents and business owners in Chinatown have held protests, and McKeen says he’s the one left defending what’s really a provincial pla -
Wednesday's letters: Extra playground spending out of touch
Who wouldn’t applaud Rachel Notley’s government for giving $20 million dollars to build more playgrounds for our kids, right?
Until one realizes that the province already spends $1.5 billion per year of lottery profits on community initiatives in the province. In addition, individual school and charity groups directly receive almost $200 million per year from casinos under the province’s charity model plus a lesser amount per year from hosting bingos and other games of chance. -
Opinion: For workplace safety, obeying rules is just the start
Despite the efforts of employers, safety certifications, and binders full of rules and regulations, too many people continue to be hurt or even fatally injured at work.
Last year alone there were 1.5 Workers’ Compensation claims for every 100 people on the job. That’s part of what makes the story of an Edmonton-based company, Waiward Steel, so compelling. The firm has improved its safety record by 800 per cent, banking more than 4.6 million hours without lost time due to safety incid -
Dan Barnes: Ghana's national baseball team pulls out of game against Edmonton Prospects
It seemed improbable from the start that Ghana’s national baseball team would want to travel from west Africa to Edmonton for an exhibition game against the Prospects.
Eleven-thousand kilometres for a friendly?
It comes as less of a surprise to hear that the Rising Stars of Ghana will not be arriving in Edmonton on Thursday or playing the Prospects at Re/Max Field on Monday, after all. A new federal government elected in December has apparently wrapped the visa acquisition process in thick -
