A 42-year-old Red Deer woman who drove a busload of elementary school kids into a tree has been charged with driving while impaired.
The collision happened just before 4 p.m. Monday in Red Deer’s Vanier Woods neighbourhood. A witness called 911 after seeing the bus careen into a tree and a sign and drive a short distance before coming to a stop.
The bus was filled with elementary school kids age 5-12, according to a news release from Red Deer RCMP. Emergency services and fire s

Chief judge to examine court ordered jailing of sexual assault victim
The provincial court’s top judge will examine the circumstances that led to a victim of sexual assault being jailed and shackled alongside the man later convicted of attacking her.
In a written statement Tuesday morning, provincial court Chief Judge Terry Matchett said that because he has received no complaint of misbehaviour or misconduct by the involved judge, he cannot conduct a review or impose sanctions.
However, Matchett added that given the circumstances that resulted in provincial -
Edmonton Eskimos head coach rewards players with a break from training camp
Turns out there actually is rest for the weary.
The Edmonton Eskimos got a welcome surprise Tuesday when head coach Jason Maas gave them a break from the mid-day heat and wrapped up training camp almost two hours early.
The schedule originally called for a 9:20 a.m. to noon session, but by a little after 10, Maas blew the whistle on practice and told the players to hit the Commonwealth Stadium pool.
“We have 17 practices before we play our first pre-season game, and our guys have been work -
Boxer Ryan Ford successfully defends UBO world light heavyweight title in Singapore
Ryan (The Real Deal) Ford is really starting to make a name for himself in Singapore.
The local boxer defended his UBO light heavyweight world title last month with a seventh-round technical decision victory over former WBC Asian world champion Robert Berridge in the main event of Roar of Singapore.
Ford improved to 12-0 with the May 27 victory, and because of it, Ringstar Promotions has promised him a shot at the vacant IBO Intercontinental title on their card in October.

Local school nutrition program enjoys $10,000 gift for Canada's 150th birthday
An Alberta man has donated $10,000 to Edmonton’s Food for Thought school nutrition program to commemorate Canada’s sesquicentennial.
Food for Thought, run since 2002 by a local philanthropic group, is one of 14 hunger programs in all of Canada’s provinces and territories to benefit from an overall $150,000 donation, made by Geoff Gyles as part of his own campaign and tour, Journey to End Hunger.Gyles, 60, will be travelling across the country this month in order to raise a -
Dave Loken 'dumbfounded' by new push for south side LRT
Tempers flared at City Hall over the LRT debate Tuesday as north side councillors worried their end of the city could get shafted.
“I’m just dumbfounded by what’s happened here since the announcement of a hospital in the southwest of the city,” said Coun. Dave Loken, worried the south extension will take priority over building LRT tracks to St. Albert.
“We’re four months from a civic election and people are going to be asking about this. … Do I tell the -
FC Edmonton coach hopes players will absorb video lessons to prepare for New York Cosmos
FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller planned an extensive video session following an embarrassing road loss to Puerto Rico FC on Saturday.
The idea was to point out mistakes being made by those unaware they were making mistakes.
Heading into their game against the host New York Cosmos on Wednesday, Miller hopes his players took to the the lessons.
“There are players — and I’m generalizing of course — who throughout their careers have been patted on the back quite a bit,&rd -
Jason Gregor: NBA FInals show it's teams, not individuals, that win championships
I’ve never agreed with the premise great players in sports need to win championships to cement their legacy.
That’s the goal of every athlete, of course, but teams win championships, not individuals.
Hockey’s best forwards play only 20-22 minutes a game, while the top defenders skate up to 30 minutes. The best forwards watch almost two-thirds of the game from the bench, and if their teammates falter, their chances of winning drop significantly.
Even in basketball, in which the -
Two facing second-degree murder charges in Desmarais killing
A 19-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man are facing second-degree murder charges after an altercation at a house party that left a man dead in Desmarais.
RCMP in the hamlet of around 1,500 people 325 km north of Edmonton were called to assist emergency crews outside a home in the community June 2.
Police found the body of 33-year-old Dorium Yellowknee.
Investigators believe Yellowknee was wounded in the early morning during an altercation at a party at another house. An autopsy con -

The awards, taking place June 26, at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre, recognize the best in Edmonton theatre. There were a total of 113 nominations in 24 categories, with nods such as Outstanding Fringe Performance by an Actor, Outstanding Musical Director and Outstanding -

Breakfast T: Nashville deservedly being recognized as a smash hit on NHL circuit
Well, that’s that.
One of the best kept secrets in the NHL is a secret no more. On the Mount Rushmore of NHL road trip cities, Nashville is right there with Montreal, Chicago and New York.
Commissioner Gary Bettman and the owners have made some ugly and costly mistakes when it comes to expansion into non-traditional US markets, but Nashville is a brilliant example of one place where they got it right.
Filip Forsberg #9 of the Nashville Predators celebrates with his teammates after scoring -
Fans name Gretzky-led '84-85 Oilers NHL's greatest team
NASHVILLE — The Wayne Gretzky-led 1984-85 Edmonton Oilers have been chosen by fans as the greatest NHL team of all time, the league announced Monday.
The league said in a statement that more than 3.6 million votes for the greatest team cast were over a six-week period beginning at the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs as part of the NHL’s centennial celebration. The NHL’s 96 Cup winners since the League’s inaugural season in 1917-18 competed in head-to-head voting.

Failures in sex assault victim case 'almost too numerous to list': Justice minister
Alberta’s justice minister has ordered an independent investigation into the courts’ treatment of a sexual assault complainant who was shackled while giving evidence about the attack, and held in custody alongside the man who assaulted her.
Kathleen Ganley said Monday the failures that led to a young indigenous woman’s mistreatment are “almost too numerous to list.”
The details of what happened to the woman came as a surprise to her brother, who described her -
'Who are you and where are you from?': Four Edmonton writers talk about voice, language and identity
The Edmonton Public Library launched its first Capital City Press Festival with a panel discussion featuring four Edmonton writers.
Marilyn Dumont is a Métis poet and novelist, and a professor of English and native studies at the University of Alberta. David van Belle is the library’s writer-in-residence, a playwright, actor and director, originally from the Netherlands. Lana Whiskeyjack is a Cree painter, digital artist and multimedia essayist. University of Alberta exhibit highlights the absurd reality of women's clothing sizes
An exhibit in the University of Alberta’s Human Ecology Gallery is challenging sizing standards in women’s wear.
“It’s not your body, it is the system of manufacturing that is accelerating its lack of even acknowledging a variety of bodies,” said Anne Bissonnette, associate professor in material culture and curatorship and curator of the exhibit on display until Sept. 13 at the ecology building near 116 Street and 90 Avenue.

Tuesday's letters: Victim's treatment shakes faith in justice system
I am writing to all Albertans today out of a sense of profound desperation. I was reading a CBC article about Angela Cardinal, a rape victim, put in jail and kept in shackles for being tired in court.
It is incredibly difficult for women to come forward and testify against their accusers.
The percentage of women who report sexual assault is incredibly low. The whole system punishes women for being a victim. And then this happens. This woman was the victim of a brutal and violent assault and Judg -
The Butternut Tree to open near the legislature in late summer
Trained in New York, chef Scott Downey is bringing his culinary skills back home to Edmonton to launch his new restaurant, The Butternut Tree.
Located in the Ledgeview Business Centre at 9707 110 St., the restaurant — scheduled to open in August — will offer more than 60 seats to diners keen to experience its stellar view.
With large banks of window overlooking the river valley and the Alberta legislature, The Butternut Tree (named after the only walnut tree that grows in Canada -
Opinion: Where is Alberta gov't plan for coal communities?
Over the past year-and-a-half, Alberta’s coal communities have heard that the industry that has sustained their families for generations needs to be phased out.
In the name of good government, the province promised that these communities would not be left high and dry – though they claimed that’s what the federal government had just the intention of doing. There would be jobs, they said, retraining, and subsidies for local economic diversification.
Most recently, coal communiti -
Might there be a role for Mark Fayne with Edmonton Oilers after all?
Edmonton Oilers 2016-17 in review:The Irregulars, Part Two
One of the major contributors to the Edmonton Oilers’ turnaround in 2016-17 was the excellent health of the team’s key players. A trickle-down effect was a reduced opportunity for minor-leaguers to get a look.
Take the defence, where just 11 defenders suited up for the Oil all season long, compared to 14, 13, and 14 the three prior campaigns. Moreover, the top eight defencemen played 483 of a possible 492 games, leaving table -
Zumba challenge: Seniors and elementary students dance together
Zumba-dancing seniors proved to Grade 6 students Monday they can still bust a move to kick off Seniors’ Week in Alberta.
Sage Seniors Association challenged 25 students from St. Philip Catholic Elementary School to an intergenerational Zumba Gold challenge.
Zumba Gold is a less intense version of the popular aerobic fitness class inspired by Latin dance.
Sage’s life enrichment co-ordinator, Rachel Tassone, came up with the idea after telling her 11-year-old daughter Ava about h -
Southside Edmonton mental health clinic helps cut youth wait times
Wait times for Edmonton youth needing mental health services have substantially improved in recent months following the opening of a new health facility in the city’s south side, the Alberta government said Monday.
The Rutherford Mental Health Clinic, on Edmonton’s south side, nearly triples the capacity of specialized clinic-based mental health delivered by Alberta Health Services in Edmonton. It provides a range of programs and services for children and youth ages four to 18.

Graham Thomson: Alberta Liberals choose new leader in hope of avoiding political extinction
Alberta Liberals — who elected Calgary lawyer David Khan as their new leader on the weekend — deserve to celebrate.
Um, not because they have a new leader.
They should celebrate because it was 100 years ago this week that the Alberta Liberals won a majority government — on June 7, 1917, to be precise.
It was their fourth electoral victory in a row. It was also their last.
They should celebrate now. The way things are going for Alberta Liberals, it will be 100 years before -
New school fees, big hikes now need education minister's blessing
Any new school fees or substantial increases need the approval of Alberta’s education minister before school boards can foist them on parents, according to new provincial regulations.
On Monday, cabinet approved two regulations to rein in school fees on basic education costs and transportation as part of a $50-million promise to reduce the burden of school fees on Alberta families.
While some Calgary parents say transportation changes will double their kids’ busing fees next year, Ed -
Paula Simons: Apology too little, too late, for sexual assault victim sent to remand centre
She was kidnapped. Sexually assaulted. Choked. Stabbed.
Then she was brutalized by the justice system meant to protect her.
The story — first reported by the CBC this week — of what happened to a 28-year-old Cree woman sounds like a horror movie.
On the most flimsy of pretexts, the provincial court judge at a preliminary hearing for her attacker ordered the mother of four to be held at the Edmonton Remand Centre for almost a week to ensure she’d testify.
She was forc -
Terry Jones: More-affordable Grey Cup promised for Edmonton in 2018
It might be the best CFL news of the year.
Edmonton intends to give the Grey Cup game back to the real football fans from coast to coast.
At the 106th Grey Cup Nov. 25, 2018 in Edmonton, there will be no Toronto 2016 rip-off pricing where the cheapest seats were $169-$199 and went as high as $899.
Thousands from around the nation decided to stay home, leaving Toronto organizers with unsold tickets galore.
