Training camp curse? Eskimos running back says injuries are just part of football
John White is no stranger to season-ending injuries in training camp.
The Edmonton Eskimos running back ruptured his Achilles early on in 2015, which forced him to the sidelines while his team trotted to a Grey Cup championship without him.
Injuries are a brutal reality of football, to be sure. But his seems to have kicked off a string of similar unfortunate circumstances where Eskimos teammates have found themselves done for the season before it even begins.
Last year, it was promising cornerba

Lees: Youth Orchestra of Northern Alberta to play first full-orchestra concert
A message from outer space has filled the ranks of the Youth Orchestra of Northern Alberta (YONA) in time for its first full-orchestra concert.
“Musicians came to our school and played Darth Vader’s theme tune from Star Wars and Princess Leia’s theme,” says 10-year-old Zander Ross, a student at St. Alphonsus Catholic School.
“I was mesmerized by the music and excited when I was told I could learn to play an instrument.”

Rodent droppings can be deadly: province issues hantavirus warning
Rodent-spread and potentially deadly, hantavirus is a growing threat as the province heads into warmer months, warns Alberta Health Services.
Hantavirus is a potentially fatal airborne illness spread by rodents — most commonly deer mice — that affects the lungs and respiratory system.
Dr. Christopher Sikora, Edmonton zone medical officer of health, said the virus is most common following the winter months when large furniture and cabins are being re-opened.

No better time to grab Top 4 right-shot d-man than right now. Will Edmonton Oilers pounce?
Even with expansion forcing trades, I can’t see Oilers making a move
TSN’s Frank Seravalli has published a list of players on the block, and his “TSN’s Hockey’s Trade Bait list” includes names like forwards Matt Duchene, Boone Jenner, Alex Killorn, Calle Jarnkrok, Jonathan Drouin and defencemen Sami Vatanen, Jonas Brodin, Matt Dumba and Travis Hamonic. The latter group are all right shot d-men, so there’s a pre-expansion draft glut on the market.

Cancer patients find new outlet for help at Wellspring Edmonton
Edmontonians travelling near the University of Alberta’s south campus in recent months have undoubtedly noticed a new structure along 113 Street at 65 Avenue.
With a design that comes across as part modern home, part community centre and part health clinic, the purpose of the 1,115-square-metre facility has been the subject of much curiosity.
In fact, the building is the new headquarters of Wellspring Edmonton, an organization catering to cancer patients by offering free services such

Alberta Hate Crimes Committee aims to clear up confusion between hate incidents and hate crimes
When a man tied a rope into a noose, dangled it from his hand and told two Muslim women, “This is for you” before singing O Canada at the University LRT station in November, city police easily identified the event as a hate incident.
Labelling it a hate crime proved much more difficult.
“Was it a hate incident? You bet. The girls felt intimidated,” said Sgt. Gary Willits of the Edmonton Police Service hate crimes unit.
“Was it a crime? He made a few comments under h

Country power couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill play packed Rogers Place
It turns out that Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have a sly sense of humour.
It’s been ten years since the new country power couple were last in Edmonton, playing two sold out nights on the Soul2Soul 2007 tour at what was then Rexall Place. So, what song do they choose to open their packed-out evening at Rogers Place with? Why, the Aretha Franklin and George Michael duet I Knew You Were Waiting For Me, of course.
Given the ecstatic welcome they were given there’s little doubt that Edmonto

FC Edmonton head coach takes responsibility for poor performance
As head coach, Colin Miller took full responsibility for FC Edmonton’s poor performance in Puerto Rico on Saturday.
It may have been the club’s worst since Miller took over five years ago.
FC Edmonton were dominated in a 3-0 loss against Puerto Rico FC — a score actually flattering the visitors, who were woefully outplayed.
“I prepare the team, I pick the team, and that team (Edmonton) was just so far away from the level that I would expect,” Miller said. “I&r

Eskimos Fan Day a welcome break from training camp grind
For football campers who have been slogging away over the past week, the Edmonton Eskimos’ mock game Friday offered a welcome change of pace.
The highly scripted training camp grind gave way to an intersquad scrimmage between offence, defence and special teams, complete with 20-second play clock, substitutions and play calling on the fly.

Mike Benevides wasn’t kidding around when he said in a team meeting on the eve of training camp a week ago the Edmonton Eskimos defence he’s in charge of co-ordinating was already ready to play a game the very next day.
Sure, it was far from perfect.
