The new federal infrastructure bank might help Edmonton finance district energy projects being explored for downtown and Blatchford, Mayor Don Iveson says.
The Crown corporation is still being developed, but with $35-billion in federal government funding it’s intended to bring private money and pension fund capital into major revenue-generating projects.
Iveson was in Ottawa this week for meetings of the Big City Mayors caucus, which he chairs, and the annual Federation of Canadian Municip

Def Leppard's wonderfully dated hair metal causes Hysteria at Rogers Place
You can’t help but want to cheer for Def Leppard.
Not just because of the fact that they’ve held to almost the same lineup for 40 years, or that they stood by drummer Rick Allen after the accident that took his left arm in 1984, but also because they’ve diligently kept with the wonderfully dated but commercially successful pop-metal synthesis they distilled in the mid ’80s. The sound remains the same even as they age away from it; the English five-piece might no longer be -
Tornado touches down north of Three Hills
By Bryan Passifiume
It came almost out of nowhere.

The twister touched down a little after 5 p.m. in a field a few kilometres northeast of the town of Three Hills, kicking up a large amount of dirt and dust as it moved east.Dodi Brauen was sitting on her front porch watching the storm approach when the unmistakable form of a funnel cloud suddenly started to descend from the swirling, -
Alberta to update liquor laws: 'It’s about improving the whole grain-to-glass experience'
Just in time for patio season, this summer will likely see more changes to Alberta’s liquor laws.
The government and Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission have been working to modernize some of the province’s more archaic liquor laws for the past two years.
The explosion of the craft beer and distillery industries in particular has resulted in changes to legislation and Finance Minister Joe Ceci told the Edmonton Journal there are more changes coming.

Safe injection site approvals can't come quickly enough, province says
After promising new action to fight the opioid crisis in Alberta, the provincial government is anxious to move ahead with safe injection sites, but is still waiting on the OK from the federal government.
“To be frank, I would have liked to have gotten the approvals for those yesterday,” associate health minister Brandy Payne said Friday.
“I don’t believe those approvals can come quickly enough and our office is in continual contact with Health Canada, reminding them of th -
Lower costs resulted in higher 2016 net income for Alberta farmers
Cheaper cattle prices in 2016 led to a surprising gain in net income for Alberta farmers as a whole last year.
The realized net income of Alberta farmers, a key measure of farm financial health, increased by almost 15 per cent, according to Statistics Canada’s 2016 farm income report. The primary reason, said Statistics Canada’s Steve Boyd, is that even though cash receipts declined, there was a larger drop in operating expenses for Alberta farmers.

Dining Out: Food critic got religion at Vaticano Cucina
It was a nondescript, windy spring day here in dusty, blown-garbage-baggy River City.
But the timing and planets alignment seemed right. So right.
When and how and with whom should a relative pagan visit a new restaurant with the sheer courage (divine right?) to call itself Vaticano Cucina?
Especially when said resto is located nowhere near a house of worship (absenting churches of consumerism), but sandwiched between Gateway Boulevard and Calgary Trail in the old, unlamented Koutouki South loca -

Eco-Solar Home Tour highlights energy-saving innovations

The answer is yes, according to organizers of Edmonton’s annual Eco-Solar Home Tour, being held Saturday and Sunday in and around Edmonton.
“This is the 18th annual edition of the tour,” said Andrew Mills, president of the Eco-Solar Tour. “It started off in 2000 with a number of people who had just come from a big solar conference and they said ‘how can we keep this enthusiasm going,’ so they put this tour together to show peop -
Saturday's letters: Maxime Bernier's loss a blow for consumers
The recent Conservative leadership win of Andrew Scheer over Maxime Bernier means that consumers lost out to the milk lobby, mostly from Quebec.
Maxime Bernier had boldly championed real change in wanting to dismantle supply management. Supply management is the system that controls dairy, egg, and chicken prices.
So who is standing up for us consumers now?

Opinion: Government belongs to the people; so should its documents
Government publications should belong to the people.
I’m not talking about confidential memos or the everyday correspondence of government, I’m talking about publications that are prepared for and disseminated to the public, with public funding.

Graham Thomson: Rachel Notley might yet make political silk purse from Trump's environmental sow's ear
When President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris agreement on climate change this week, I’m pretty sure he didn’t give a moment’s thought to the proposed expansion of the Kinder Morgan pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast.
Not that Trump is even aware of its existence or, if he were, would he care.
But his decision to thumb his nose at global efforts to combat man-made climate change promises to create more problems for the already troubled project on at -
Newcomer shares link with Canadian Olympian
Catherine Kluyts and three-time Canadian Olympic hurdler Anglea Whyte have a pretty unique link.
The 18-year-old from St. Albert who moved to Edmonton from South Africa five years ago, broke Whyte’s Alberta Summer Games record last year with a time of 14.40 in the 100 metre hurdles, and she’d later play a small role in helping Whyte prepare for her third Olympics, without even realizing it at the time.
“Being from South Africa, I had never heard anything about her before until -
Eskimos suffer second Canadian linebacker injury
Cory Greenwood may have been just the tip of the iceberg.
A day after it was announced the veteran Canadian linebacker’s season was ended by an ACL injury, a host of his Edmonton Eskimos teammates sat out of Friday’s mock game at Commonwealth Stadium.
While receivers Brandon Zylstra (groin) and Shamawd Chambers (hamstring) were the other two walking wounded earlier this week, they were joined on the sidelines by running backs John White, Kendial Lawrence (left leg) and Travon Van, le -
Two former employees charged in $400,000 storage-container fraud
Two people face fraud charges after allegedly selling storage shipping containers belonging to a company where they worked.
Edmonton police said the west-end storage company fired the employees in February 2014 after discovering losses totalling $400,000.
According to a news release, the employees sold a number of shipping containers belonging to the company between June 2012 and early 2014. The containers were valued at $2,000 to $5,000 each.
The accused allegedly used the online classifieds si -
CN Rail fined $125,000 for North Saskatchewan River diesel spill in 2015
A local environmental group will receive the bulk of a $125,000 penalty levied against Canadian National Railway (CN) after the company pleaded guilty Friday to environmental charges related to diesel leaking into the North Saskatchewan River.
CN entered guilty pleas to charges laid under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act for releasing a substance that may cause an adverse effect on the environment and for failing to remediate, manage, remove or dispose of the substance -
How a herd of trained goats could demolish the thistles of Rundle Park
Goats are browsers — they learn what to eat from their mothers. So it you convince a goat that thistles are like ice cream, generations of goats will destroy it.
That’s the animal science behind a new pilot project seeking a natural solution to the Canada thistles, leafy spurge and common tansy trying to take over Edmonton’s Rundle Park. This summer, shepherd Jeannette Hall and her herd of 200 specially-trained goats will clean out the park, seeking out the weeds they think are -
Paula Simons: Get us out from under, Wonder Woman
I was 11 when Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman burst onto Edmonton TV screens in 1975. Today, of course, the live-action cartoon looks impossibly cheesy. But I loved it, invisible plane, golden lasso and all.
The 1970s were a golden age for strong female heroines. The year after Wonder Woman came out on CBS, ABC fought back and released The Bionic Woman, starring Lindsay Wagner as super-strong spy Jamie Sommers. Not to be outdone, in 1976 CBS also released Charlie’s Angels, the saga of th -
Dreger: It sounds like Jordan Eberle of Edmonton Oilers "will definitely get traded."
Strongest statement on Oil’s intentions so far …
This in from Darren Dreger on TSN’s Insider Trading, confirmation of the worst kept secret in hockey: “I’m told there are offers on the table for Jordan Eberle, nothing that Peter Chiarelli, the general manager of the Oilers, is willing to accept just yet.”
Dreger then mentioned the Oil’s cap situation and the need to sign up Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid and have them fit under the cap, with Eberle m -
Area residents weigh in on plan to cull growing herd in Elk Island National Park
Devon Rundvall uses Elk Island National Park five or six times a year to go hiking and canoeing on the trails and lakes. And if park biologists believe a hunting program is required to manage the elk population, he trusts them.
“There’s probably serious ecosystem damage that needs to be fixed,” said Rundvall after filling out a response Wednesday evening at an open house in Edmonton’s Alfred H. Savage Centre.
“Because I love the park so much, I want it to stay prist
