If you thought construction was already bad in southeast Edmonton, just wait.
TransEd will be opening several new construction sites for the Valley Line LRT project shortly, working on all 13 kilometres of the line at once to get trains running by the end of 2020.
“It is probably the largest urban construction project in Edmonton’s history when you consider how much construction is going on simultaneously across the city,” said Dean Heuman, head of stakeholder relations, giving

Paula Simons: Child death review legislation a betrayal of public trust
I have to say this for the Notley government. They don’t waste time.
It’s been just six weeks since the all-party child death review panel tabled its recommendations to improve Alberta’s deeply dysfunctional child death review system. Yet on Tuesday, the NDP tabled its new child death review legislation.
But for all the rush, the legislation is a crushing disappointment. Far from making the system more transparent and accountable, it enshrines a whole new level of secrecy -

The province is creating a new commission to help combat Alberta’s opioid problem.
The commission, which will be co-chaired by Dr. Karen Grimsrud, the province’s chief medical officer of health, will aim to bring together doctors, police officers, frontline workers and parents who lost children to fentanyl.
One of the first priorities will be expanding drug coverage for opioid replacement therapy. The government will also be looking to expand the distribution of naloxone, a drug -

CFL Extra: Former Eskimos D-lineman shining at Roughriders camp
Willie Jefferson has picked up where he left off in 2016, when the lanky defensive end was one of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ top defensive players after signing with the Green and White following an unsuccessful NFL tryout. Jefferson had eight defensive tackles and three sacks in five regular-season games last year.
Jefferson has been a force at training camp. He has stretched his 6-foot-5 frame to knock down passes and used his speed and agility to pressure quarterbacks. Jefferson&rsqu -

Opinion: Polytechnics train workers for next-generation infrastructure
Canada’s economy is inextricably linked to our infrastructure – and it’s always been so.
Our nation and its economy would have developed very differently were it not for the construction of a transcontinental railway just 14 years after Confederation in 1867.
On the eve of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the country and the economy look vastly different than they did in 1881 when the first trains rolled from Montreal to British Columbia, by way of Kicking Horse Pass -

Wednesday's letters: Frustrating response to windstorm
Just a few recommendations to homeowners after my experiences with last week’s wind storm and Epcor.

I waited six hours to talk to a human. Of course they were busy, but six hours of insanity-inducing messages and music was too much. I had two trees across power lines and a line that snapped in th -
Opinion: Why the double standard for tobacco and marijuana?
On the eve of World No Tobacco Day (May 31), the federal health minister has an opportunity to explain why she is exhibiting a disturbing degree of incoherence with her recent approaches to the regulation of tobacco and marijuana.
Public explanation is needed as both marijuana and tobacco are addictive substances with known, and in some cases, similar, health risks. This suggests that marijuana and tobacco should face a similar regulatory framework, but Minister Jane Philpott appears to be heade -
Contract dispute with musicians could disrupt Edmonton's Breakout West Festival
A contract dispute is threatening to disrupt the annual Breakout West Festival being held in Edmonton this September to celebrate the Western Canadian music industry.

Graham Thomson: 'That pipeline will be built': Rachel Notley predicts Trans Mountain will trump B.C. politics
If it’s a war they want, it’s a war they’ll get.
That pretty much sums up the fist-shaking declaration Premier Rachel Notley issued to her NDP cousins in British Columbia over the $7.4-billion Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
