Julia Lipscombe: Family feeling recharged after technology break at mountain resort
Escaping to Mount Engadine Lodge for a screen-free getaway recharged all of our batteries.
My nine-year-old and seven-year-old stepsons are extremely active. They love sports of all kinds and often are bike-riding and scootering and slack-lining in the backyard. They definitely get more than the recommended amount of exercise per day.
But, they also love their electronics, especially their iPads.
iPads are great. And I don’t mind them watching TV shows on them or cutting their own YouTube -

Talk Therapy proves entertaining in Varscona season opener
If a dark stranger wearing an odd hat promised you a hot tip on the future, what would you want to know?
Obviously nobody wants to hear about a dramatic weight gain, or the series of alarming on-line dating experience yet to come. But the stakes as we move forward are often more subtle. What of contentment? Will it ever return?
Such questions are at the heart of the latest Teatro La Quindicina production gracing the stage as The Salon of the Talking Turk begins its -
Highway 63 partially reopens after liquid condensate spill
RCMP have reopened the southbound lane of Highway 63 where a semi-trailer rolled Friday, spilling natural gas condensate.
However, northbound traffic near Boyle is still blocked Saturday morning as clean-up crews contain the spill.
The driver of a semi-trailer hauling the hydrocarbons lost control Friday, and the truck rolled across the centre median, according to police. No one was injured.
Initially, workers shut down the highway to keep the public out of a 300-metre perimeter for the mop up. -
Paula Simons: Electoral Boundaries Commission report is overdue justice for Edmonton
“Alberta is no longer rural.”
That is a blunt assessment of Alberta’s Electoral Boundaries Commission.
On Thursday, the commission issued its interim report on the redrawing of Alberta’s provincial electoral ridings. In a majority report, with one dissension, the commissioners agreed the province can no longer go on discounting the votes of urban Albertans. It’s time, say the commissioners, to move towards dividing the province into ridings with a more ev -
Pet-friendly design tips prevent home decor from going to the dogs
Pampering your pets without letting your home’s design style go to the dogs? Tired of thinking you’re living in your cat’s flat rather than your own? It doesn’t have to be that way, according to local interior designer Candace Wolfe, who says creature comforts and stylish design can work for both you and your pet.
“A lot of people do makeshift changes to their design style because of their pets, but they don’t have to,” says Wolfe, the creative director -

Saturday's letters: Why enforce school zones when kids aren't around?
I just opened my mail and got a cash-cow surprise, which happened at 9:45 a.m., when every kid is at their desk. I got a $105 photo radar ticket for driving 40 km/h in a 30-km/h school zone.
I have written to the city about this ridiculous speed. A flashing light that was previously on the street worked well and only flashed when the kids were out and about. Since the city has done away with the flashing light, many innocent drivers have gotten unnecessary tickets.
We do not need to drive 30 km/ -

Memorial Cup struggles indicate it's best to be patient with Ethan Bear
In the 2017 Memorial Cup, Edmonton Oilers prospect Ethan Bear played three games, scored not one point and was -4 goals plus-minus.
