  Sorting glass and cans from papers in Sault Ste. Marie recycling bins has been an easy job for decades, but it could get a bit more complicated. 
    Ontario is overhauling its recycling system, and that means establishing new provincewide guidelines on what is dropped in the recycling bins, and what is dropped into waste bins. 
    It’s all part of the new process, effective Jan. 1, that shifts responsibility to producers and changes how households sort their waste.

    It’s alleged he started a fire on Jan. 7 at 8:30 p.m. in his own residence on Blutcher Street and made no attempts to help control it.  Dylan Taylor has been charged with arson – damage to property.

• Shed fire extinguished

  Sault firefighters extinguished a shed fire in the 100 block of Trelawne Avenue on Jan. 6.  It’s believed a propane leak in close proximity to a heating unit was the cause of the fire.  Significant fire and smoke damage was done to the exterior of the shed.  No injuries were reported.

• Festive RIDE campaign results nets eight impaired charges

  Eight drivers were charged with impaired driving as a combined result of the RIDE campaign and regular patrols during the month of December.  Police say that between Dec. 1, 2025, and Jan. 1, 2026, about 700 vehicles were checked, 20 road and side breath tests administered during the campaign. That resulted in three provincial offence notices and one impaired driving charge. A further seven impaired driving charges were issued on regular patrols.

  City police have charged a 50-year-old man with two counts of robbary in connection to a December incident.  Police say that on Dec. 14, officers responded to reports of a robbery in the area of Albert Street East near Abbott Street.  It is alleged a man assaulted a victim and stole property from the victim on two separate occasions – by punching the victim to the ground on Dec. 12 and punching the same person on Dec. 14.  The victim and accused are known to each other.
